LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

'05-'06 + 6-23-6
'06-'07 + 13-21-3
'07-'08 + 7-21-8
'10-'11 + 4-30-4
'11-'12 + 16-19-4
'12-'13 + 8-16-4
'13-'14 + 12-11-5
'14-'15 + 8-28-2
'15-'16 + 14-22-5
'16-'17 + 11-14-5

= 99-205-46

Methinks that math might be the common denominator, man.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

A good article from Randy Russon of http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com and http://www.saultthisweek.com on Atte Tolvanen, the goaltender from Northern Michigan University who has 5 straight shutouts. Jeremiah Luedtke of Anchorage was the last player to score on Tolvanen on January 20th.

This has become the story of the civilized hockey world. Sophomore goaltender Atte Tolvanen made a career-high 48 saves and tied a Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association record with his fifth straight shutout as the surging Northern Michigan Wildcats moved into possession of a Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff spot.

Tolvanen has now gone 335 minutes and 39 seconds without allowing a goal and has made a remarkable 207 saves in succession during that span.

The latest Tolvanen shutout — and Northern Michigan victory — was a 2-0 blanking of the visiting Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks on Saturday night.

Junior forward Robbie Payne, formerly of the Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League, had both goals as Northern Michigan won its sixth straight game to move into a sixth-place tie with the Lake Superior State Lakers in the 10-team WCHA.

Payne has team-leading totals of 12 goals, 13 assists, 25 points.

With his fifth shutout in a row, Tolvanen tied the mark set by Blaine Lacher, who established the feat back in 1994 while tending twine for Lake Superior State. Lacher still holds the longest scoreless streak in Division 1, NCAA history with 375 minutes, 1 second.

Ironically, the last player to score on Atte Tolvanen is former LSSU Laker standout Owen Headrick, now with the Erie Otters, who happen to be undefeated since the smooth skating D-man arrived.

Some NHL free agent talk for LSSU's Bindulis, as well as Kato's Brickley (Thought #25 in Friedman's 30 Thoughts)
I think Hults and Bindulis are the Lakers getting the most attention from NHL scouts. Hopefully they both come back next season. I don't remember the actual numbers, but the odds of leaving early and making it to the NHL are pretty slim for guys (undrafted free agents) who leave before their Junior year. Hard for these young guys to ignore the money being dangled in front of them though.

Seriously, I don't know where he's getting that Headrick was the last to score on him:

1/20 - Here is the box for the UAA game & the last goal allowed.

1/14 Game, NMU @ LSSU - Humitz made the game-tying goal in the 2nd (with Henke and Saccoman assisted on), which ended up leading to a shootout that LSSU lost. No assists for Headrick

1/13 - LSSU @ NMU - Have to look at the Recap, since the box doesn't seem to have 3v3 overtime listed. Humitz, again, had a goal in the first, and Torrel scored in 3-on-3, no assists listed.

1/7 - LSSU @ NMU - Final even strength goal was from Cuglietta, with Headrick having the primary assist.

1/6 - NMU @ LSSU - 2 goals from Nellis, 1 from Cuglietta. No assists for Headrick.

And...that would be the season series with NMU. It also looks like Tolvanen played all 4 games for them too. So the most that I can find is that Headrick had an assist on the Saturday of the first home & home.

If anyone finds anything different, let me know, but these come from the official box scores (or the recap, in one case) on the WCHA website.

EDIT: Oh, look, he changed the original post after being called out last night.

I think Hults would be the more likely candidate to come back next year especially since his brother is supposed to be joining the team too, though I think Bindulis would benefit from coming back next season: He's very talented, but I think if he leaves this early, he may spend way more time in the ECHL or maybe the AHL for a lot longer than he may if he were to stay in school for a year or two.

The younger Hults has decommitted from LSSU and is looking at other options, which might provide a bit of a hint towards the older Hults. Bindulis is very talented, but would definitely benefit from staying in college longer.

I heard something about that, but I was hoping it wasn't true.

From what I've been hearing, it sounded like Cole Hults wasn't coming. Kinda wonder if UW was unofficially pursuing him behind the scenes and got him to change his mind. Maybe, maybe not. Some coaches no longer honor the gentlemen's agreement. I think the commitment we got from D-man Tyler Anderson last week was probably a replacement for Cole Hults. Anderson will be coming in next season.

Bindulis is being pursued for his skating ability and he has decent size. He needs to work on his defensive play and another season or preferably 2 of college hockey would certainly help him prior to turning pro.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I'm not a big fan of a player leaving before playing their junior season unless the player is NHL ready.

When Hults decided to not go to Minnesota and come to Lake Superior I remember one post on their thread mention how it was no blow to the program because he was projected a depth to bottom line player. I think he has risen his play since coming here so why not stay another season to raise it more.

When it comes to Bindy I think he has talent and is a superior skater (I have watched him play with the Eagles as well) but he has so far to go and be physically strong enough. Why not stay and work on honing your God given talent. He will get stronger and get plenty of ice time here.

I have talked to or heard a few former Lakers that left early and they said leaving may not have been the best move. I think the NHL is just using this as a way of trying to find a diamond in the rough. Why else would the percentage of these college free agents that actually making it to the show be so low. I do understand that the player's have worked and dedicated their entire life to getting to the promised land but man look at the track record of others being signed before you.

Like many if not all of you I don't like the timing of Hedrick leaving and as it evolves it may have even costs us the younger Hults as well. If he left before the season then Cole would have been here this season I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, I don't think there's any question about that. If Headrick had informed the coaches that he was leaving for the OHL before the season started, that would have left us short 1 D-man. The coaches could have tried to recruit another D-man at the last minute to replace Headrick, but what they very likely would have done is bring in Cole Hults this season. Even though they felt another season of USHL hockey would be good for his development (and it has), he was close enough to being ready for the college game to bring him in this season.

The self appointed "expert" of this thread and all things good ship Laker is quick to point the finger of blame at the players, in this case Owen Headrick, and turns a blind eye to the head coach and what issues might be there or have caused the player to leave.

Methinks "Bill" is very much the insiders insider, man.

The Erie Otters won their 11th straight game tonite over the London Knights. That makes them 11-0 since the addition of the smooth skating former LSSU Laker from Garden River, Ontario, Owen Headrick.

Personally, I have enjoyed the Laker games I've seen this year. A Lot of parity in the nWCHA.
What do the numbers you showed refer to? They are not our record in those years.
