LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Just remembered Globke didn't play Saturday. Is he in Damon's doghouse for the DQ penalty he got at Tech?

Most Likely.

In person the Lakers were not very impressive over the weekend but they did play in front Gordie very good. The Laker's do not look like they have any cohesion especially their passing. BSU is a very quick team and fun to watch and they did clog the passing lanes which made the Laker's passing even harder to get through.

I hope Patterson can stay healthy and in Damon's good graces, he played well for it being so long since he last played. He likes to shoot and the crowd at the game sure picked up on that.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

That was asked on the show. Damon didn't say, noting that it was an in house issue.

Speaking of the show, they don't have the podcast available yet. With Hand and Patterson playing again, it does give Damon more options on who to bring on the Anchorage trip.

I see they posted it a little after Two today Bill.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

A record number of 123 student-athletes were honored Thursday as recipients of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete Award. The list, comprised of both the men's and women's conferences included a school record-tying nine members from Lake Superior State.

The WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award was developed through member team Faculty Athletic Representatives and approved by the conference membership for the 2005-06 season. To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his/her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.

Over the 11 years of the award, there have now been more than 950 WCHA Scholar-Athlete honorees representing every men's and women's conference-member institution. Fifty-nine (59) of this season's 123 recipients are repeat honorees, with 20 of those now being three-time honorees.

In addition, three individuals – Bemidji State University's Whitney Wivoda, along with University of North Dakota teammates Shelby Amsley-Benzie and Shannon Kaiser – are now four-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award honorees. In the 11-year history of the award, there have been just 12 such student-athletes.

For the third time in his career, senior forward and team captain Austin McKay made the grade. A native of Toronto, Ont., McKay is a finance and economics major.

Junior forwards Jayson Angus and Alex Globke are also repeat winners of the award after earning the status of Scholar-Athlete for the first time last season as sophomores. Both Angus and Globke are also majoring in finance and economics at LSSU.

Six Lakers received the honor for the first time in their careers, including senior Zach Loesch (business marketing), junior Aaron Davis (business entrepreneurship), and sophomores Gordon Defiel (business Management), Kyle Chatham (business) Ryan Renz (biochemistry), and Aidan Wright (fire science).

LSSU has produced 21 winners of the WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award since joining the conference in 2013-14.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Nice win. Great see the team rebound and not panic after UAA scored two quick goals early in the 2nd period. Damon called a timeout after that and it paid off. Also nice to see Patterson score his first goal of the season.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Was anybody else having trouble picking up the broadcast over the air? Seemed like the station was having issues for a good chunk of time.

Great to see Henke putting it in the net lately. Consecutive game winning power-play goals late in the game.

Did anybody catch what happened with Torrell right after the game ended?

The power went out in the stations area right before the game.

I think he got into it with a UAA player after he shot the puck into the empty net after time expired.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

A late power-play goal lifted Lake Superior State 3-2 over Alaska Anchorage on the road in Friday night's Western Collegiate Hockey Association series opener. The victory keeps the Lakers (11-18-4, 8-11-4 WCHA) alone at seventh place in the WCHA standings and provides a four-point cushion ahead of UAA and Alaska Fairbanks.

Sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel responded well after allowing two goals in the opening minutes of the second period by UAA to tie the game and eventually held on to record his eighth win of the season. Defiel (8-11-3) made 22 saves and stood tall when his team needed him the most.

The Lakers opened the scoring 8:53 into the first period with a goal by Josh Nenadal (5-1--6). The goal by the freshman Nenadal, his fifth of the season, was assisted by Gus Correale (5-8--13) and C.J. Hayes (3-3--6).

With 3:50 remaining in the opening period sophomore Scott Patterson (1-0--1) split a pair of Seawolves defenders and fired a shot through the legs of starting goaltender Olivier Mantha. Fellow sophomore Kyle Chatham (1-4--5) set up Patterson with the pass through the neutral zone for the lone assist.

The Lakers took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission and held a 12-7 advantage in shots.

The Seawolves (10-16-3, 7-14-2 WCHA) responded and quickly tied the game in under two minutes of play into the second period.

Blake Tatchell scored his eighth goal of the season and 100th career point 50 seconds into the middle frame to cut the Laker lead in half at 2-1. Moments later Matt Anholt scored his fifth goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman defenseman Wyatt Ege assisted on both UAA goals to open the period.

The goals by Tatchell and Anholt were the only the only scoring by either side as the teams went to the dressing rooms for the final time knotted at 2-2. The Lakers led 23-17 in shots after two periods of play.

With just over seven minutes remaining the Lakers let their guard down and committed a potentially costly penalty. The penalty kill stood tall and as Correale exited the penalty box he was able to wrestle the puck from a Seawolves defender and turned the tables after getting hauled down with a tripping by Chase Van Allen. The second power play of the night for the Lakers was successful as J.T. Henke (8-8--16) was able to fire a perfectly placed one-time by Correale past a sprawling Mantha and put LSSU up 3-2.

The goal by Henke held up as his second consecutive game-winning goal on the power play. Correale logged his second assist of the evening and freshman Mitch Hults (6-9--15) recorded an assist on the go-ahead tally.

With 1:59 remaining in regulation and Mantha pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Hults was called for hooking, setting up the third power play of the night for the Seawolves.

Staring down a six-on-four advantage in favor of UAA, the Laker penalty killing unit held strong and Gordon Defiel stood his ground to secure the series opening win.

Mantha (9-14-3) made 26 saves in the loss, as the Lakers outshot the Seawolves 29-24.

After a stretch of six games scoring one goal or less, the Lakers have now scored three goals in back-to-back victories. LSSU was also without a power-play goal during the six-game losing streak but have since answered with power-play tallies in consecutive games.

The loss drops the Seawolves into a tie for eighth place in the standings with the Alaska Nanooks. UAF picked up an upset victory late Friday night with a shorthanded goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation to beat Bowling Green, 2-1 at home.

The teams will wrap up the series with an 11:07 p.m. ET matchup on Saturday night. Next weekend the Lakers return home to face Northern Michigan to conclude the Cappo Cup rivalry series which is knotted at one-game apiece. LSSU will also be honoring the senior class, playing their final home game at Taffy Abel Arena, with a special ceremony following Saturday's game. Tickets can be purchased online at http://lssutickets.universitytickets.com, or by calling the Norris Center Ticket Office at (906) 635-2602.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Good win and another win tonight may seal up a play-off spot or at least put it in favor for the lakers getting one.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Tough loss for us and sometimes emotions run a little too high.
You're correct about the late shot and I apologize for that.

No biggie. It's just a part of hockey.

It's looking like the Lakers will finish 6th, 7th or 8th. It's too bad Bemidji State had to upset Tech last night. Lakers will have to be ready to go and play a full 60 (or 65) minute game tonight if they want points. I think UAA will be playing desperate hockey.

Lakers did what they needed to do (for this series) last night; got a couple of points. Hopefully they'll do what they'd like to do tonight; get another point or two. But yes, UAA will likely play more desperately, so it should be a tough game.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Well we just got some big help from Michigan Tech with them blowing out Bemidji State. A win tonight would tie us with the Beavers but we would own the tiebreaker over them since we beat them in the season series. Also hopefully BGSU can beat Alaska.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

At least we got the road split and in good shape for getting a playoff berth. Points are going to be hard to get these next two weeks as both NMU and Ferris State are playing very good hockey right now.

Game really changed in the 3rd when there was not a call on Anchorage for the knee to knee on McArdle that knocked McArdle out of the game, and looks to be a serious injury. Should have been a 5 and misconduct.

How all 4 officials missed the hit is unbelievable, when the puck was right there.

I'm sure Damon will be giving Greg Shepherd a call and rightfully so.

That's the way it sounded on the radio. Effective incompetence by the refs against the Lakers is getting hard to take.

What did Drapluck do to get the misconduct?
