LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

No, everyone that knows Coach Pearson observes that he is the epitome of class. It was a heated game, a couple of his guys got hurt and Damon and Mel had an odd handshake with Damon appearing to be the aggressor with his clenching reach. The fact that they went at it in the press box, just shows the normal I saw it like I saw it and you saw it like you saw it. No big deal, no reason to defame either coach. LSSU got a great guy when they hired Coach Whitten. Good luck to the Lakers in the stretch run.
LakerBaker has become nothing more than a troll. You're probably wasting your time responding to anything LakerBaker posts. LakerBaker spent a good portion of last season trashing Damon on the Laker threads.

"Bill", like you, I woke up in a free country this morning, complete with freedom of speech. Let the others make up their own minds on whom they respond to and what they say. Methinks you are sounding like a broken record and a bit smug.

Damon Whitten is doing a phenomenal job with the LSSU Lakers and is turning around the program, and will restore it to its winning ways. His results on the ice, in the community, and with the respect in the dressing room from his players, speaks for itself.

Ringy dingy!

Lakers are in a must win situation tonight. They need to score on the power-play and stay out of the penalty box.

Getting the 1st goal of the game would help also. Nice to see Jake Hand get his 1st goal as a Laker last night.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Nice and much needed win. A great defensive effort and very solid goaltending from Gordie. Nice to see Henke get the game winning goal after serving his game suspension.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Much needed win but my god, another one goal game for the Lakers if you take the empty net goals out. The defense and goalies need the offense to help take pressure off of their backs .

Big big win for the good ship Laker last night and it was nice to ring that victory bell once again. Ringy Dingy! http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/lakers-log-must-needed-win/#more-10039

Lake Superior State broke a six-game losing streak on Saturday night with a 3-0 victory over Bemidji State in the weekend's Western Collegiate Hockey Association series finale. Along with the winless streak the Lakers (10-18-4, 7-11-4 WCHA) also kicked another monkey off their backs, a streak of 0-for-23 on the power play.

It had been nearly a month since Lake Superior State scored a power-play goal, the last one coming on a game-winning goal by freshman Diego Cuglietta on Jan. 16 against Alaska Anchorage. That curse was lifted Saturday evening when sophomore J.T. Henke scored his seventh goal of the season to lift the Lakers to a 1-0 lead with seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Henke leads the Lakers with seven goals and eight assists for 15 points on the season.

The power-play goal, scored with six seconds left on the penalty time to Bemidji's Charlie O'Connor, was the product of a persistent Laker fore-check that finally wore down the WCHA's top rated penalty killing unit. Freshman Anthony Nellis (3-10--13), who netted an assist in Friday's 2-1 defeat, laid a perfect centering pass to fellow freshman Gage Torrel (6-8--14).

Torrel payed the puck off BSU's Michael Bitzer with a well-placed shot that rebounded perfectly to a ready and waiting Henke.

With the slight lead and little time remaining, the Lakers battened down the hatches defensively and received a shutout performance by sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel. Defiel (7-11-3) made 30 saves including many acrobatic saves against odd-man advantages and four power-play tries by the Beavers (13-12-5, 8-10-4 WCHA).

Defiel's second shutout of the season and seventh of his career ties him with legendary Lakers goaltenders Bruce Hoffort and Duffy Lewis for 6th all-time on the career shutout list.

Bitzer, Defiel's counterpart, made 21 saves and was sharp throughout the contest allowing only the goal to Henke on his record.

With under a minute to play and Bitzer pulled for the extra attacker sophomore defenseman Aidan Wright (1-2--3) intercepted a loose puck in the neutral zone and fired his first goal of the season from the red line.

Moments later the Beavers pulled Bitzer again but coughed the puck up in the offensive zone, which freshman Mitch Hults (6-8--14) fired up the boards to a streaking Torrel. Torrel safely secured the empty netter for his sixth goal of the season and second point on the evening.

The assist gave Hults consecutive games with a helper after assisting on the Laker goal in Friday's contest.

With both Alaska schools idle this weekend and following a split on the series, the Lakers claimed sole possession of 7th place in the WCHA standings. Bemidji State remains in 6th place and two points ahead of the Lakers.

With a win and tie in Bemidji on Nov. 20-21, the Lakers took a 2-1-1 overall series advantage over the Beavers for the 2015-16 regular season.

Next weekend the Lakers make the difficult travel to Alaska to face Alaska Anchorage in a pair of games that will have major implications on the final two playoff spots. The Seawolves, on bye this week, currently sit 8th in the WCHA standings.

Sure is puzzling why they can't score. They had 2-3 open looks to tie it up late on Friday night and just couldn't put one away.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Another big series for the Lakers next weekend. They need to get at least a couple of points to stay above Anchorage in the standings.

Ashton Calder picked up a goal and an assist last night. He's having a decent season for a 98 birth date kid playing his first season in the NAHL. He has 9 goals and 7 assists so far.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Ought to be an interesting series for sure. Neither team has taken advantage of the chance to put distance between them and the other.

Both teams have gone 1-5 since their last meeting: UAA has been swept by BGSU, NMU, and split with UAH, while being outscored 25-15

In that time, we have been swept by MSU-M, MTU and split with BSU, and have been outscored 21-6.

Here is what the schedules look like for the end of the season for the bottom of the league, since we all love speculation about what could happen here or there:
BSU (20 pts) - 2 vs Tech, 2 vs UAH, 2 @ MSU-M
LSSU (18 pts)- 2 @ UAA, 2 vs NMU, 2 @ Ferris
UAA (16 pts) - 2 vs LSSU, 2 vs MSU-M, 2 @ UA_
UA_ (14 pts) - 2 vs BG, 2 @ Tech, 2 vs UAA
UAH (13 pts) - 2 @ NMU, 2 @ BSU, 2 vs BG

Call me crazy, but I like our chances.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I can't wait to listen to the Laker Hockey Show on ESPN Radio station 1400 at 6 p.m. with the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford and LSSU Lakers head coach Damon Whitten.

Ringy Dingy!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Any idea what the game misconduct penalty against BSU Parker was for? I hear the ref yell " 8 you're out of here" then he went to the scorer's box and each coach and said something briefly. It was announced as a 10 minute game misconduct but not what the infraction was. The official box score doesn't show anything else either.

I missed the show tonight, was anything interesting discussed?
I only caught parts of it. Figured I'd catch the rest on the podcast. Damon did say it was a big win Saturday for the team's confidence. He said they may have deserved to win more on Friday but were unable to bury some grade A chances. They talked a little about Darren Madeley being in town for some Midget games. Bill C said Madeley had a couple of pretty good kids on his midget team but Damon didn't say if the Lakers were interested in them and I wouldn't expect him to on a public broadcast. Rich Metro will be on a recruiting trip this weekend while the team is at Anchorage. There was more but I didn't catch it all.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

If we have any Laker fans in the area you're invited to the Coaches Corner: Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. in the Varsity Sports Grill in the Alaska Airlines Center. The event will feature UAA head coach Matt Thomas, senior Blake Leask and host Voice of the Seawolves David Tuttle.
The show usually lasts about an hour and is entertaining and informative.
Reserve your seat at OpenTable or just show up and we'll fit you in.
The visiting coach often attends and gives us the lowdown on his team.
With his history with the Seawolves and his local connections we're hoping Damon will be there.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Lake Superior State hockey forward Gage Torrel earned the title of Rookie of the Week in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association following last weekend's series split against Bemidji State.

Torrel, a native of Monticello, Minn., assisted on J.T. Henke's game-winning goal in Saturday's 3-0 victory over the Beavers with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Henke's goal, a power-play marker, came off of a rebound created by a shot on goal from Torrel.

With 18 seconds remaining and the Lakers clinging to a 2-0 lead, Torrel later scored an empty-net goal to cap the scoring and close out the victory for the Lakers (10-18-4, 7-11-4 WCHA). The empty-net goal gave Torrel his second point of the game and helped secure a plus/minus rating of +1 on the weekend.

This is the second time Torrel has been named WCHA Rookie of the Week this season. Torrel last won the honor on Dec. 7, 2015 following the Lakers' road sweep over Alaska. The former Langley Rivermen (British Columbia Hockey League) product was also named WCHA Rookie of the Month for his exceptional play in December.

Diego Cuglietta (Kamloops, B.C. / Merritt, BCHL) was the last freshman forward to earn the weekly honor for the Lakers. Cuglietta was named WCHA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 11 following a series split with Bowling Green.

Lake Superior State travels to Sullivan Arena this weekend to face Alaska Anchorage in a battle of teams clinging to the final two playoff spots in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

The Lakers (10-18-4, 7-11-4 WCHA) entered last week in a tie with the Seawolves (10-15-3, 7-13-2 WCHA) for seventh place in the WCHA standings, but after a split with Bemidji State and the Seawolves idle, LSSU now holds sole possession of the seventh spot.

The weekend marks the second trip to the 49th state for the Lakers this season. LSSU traveled to Fairbanks earlier this season and earned a sweep over the Alaska Nanooks on Dec. 4-5.
The Series vs. Alaska Anchorage

Overall: LSSU leads 8-4-0... In Anchorage: Tied: 2-2-0
Last meeting: Jan. 16-17, 2016, LSSU won 4-2 / UAA won 3-1
Streak: UAA 1-0-0
The Seawolves traveled to Sault Ste. Marie Jan. 16-17 and split with the Lakers. The upcoming series marks 13th and 14th meetings between the Seawolves and Lakers.

During LSSU's 4-2 win on Jan. 16, Laker freshman forward Mitch Hults opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season and netted his sixth goal of the year with an empty-net goal. Freshmen Diego Cuglietta and Josh Nenadal also scored for the Lakers. Cuglietta's tally was a power-play game winner with 3:57 remaining in regulation.

UAA captured a 3-1 win in the series finale Jan. 17.

In four previous games played in Anchorage, the teams are knotted with a pair of split series Last season, the teams split the series in Anchorage with a pair of 3-2 decisions in the season's only two meetings.

Senior forward Bryce Schmitt scored a pair of goals, including the game-winning goal in the Lakers' 3-2 series finale victory at Anchorage last season. The 3-2 win in overtime also gave Lakers coach Damon Whitten his first career win as bench boss. Whitten was formerly an assistant coach under Dave Shyiak at Alaska Anchorage from 2006-08.
Last Time Out (vs. Bemidji State)

Friday: BSU won 2-1 Saturday: LSSU won 3-0
After falling in a crushing blow on Friday night, 2-1 at home, the Lakers responded with a 3-0 victory on Saturday.

A scoreless game through over 50 minutes of play Saturday, the Lakers finally struck with a power-play goal by J.T. Henke with seven minutes remaining. The Lakers tallied a pair of empty-net goals late, including one by Gage Torrel. Torrel, who also assisted on Henke's game-winning goal, received the WCHA's Rookie of the Week title for his efforts against the Beavers.

Sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel Made 30 saves Saturday to record his second shutout of the season and the sixth of his career. With six career shutouts, Defiel ties Bruce Hoffort for sixth all-time on the Lakers shutout list.

• With a win last Saturday against the Beavers, the Lakers snapped a six-game losing streak, which started with the loss at home to the Seawolves on Jan. 17.

• Henke leads the Lakers with seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 28 games played this season.
• Hults (6-8--14) and Torrel (6-8--14) are tied for second behind Henke and lead the LSSU freshman class in scoring. • Tad Kozun leads UAA with 12 goals and is tied for 4th in the conference. Kozun has 19 points for second on the team.
"The Big Sheet"

Sullivan Arena features an Olympic style ice surface (200' x 100'). So far this season, the Lakers are 2-0-1 in games played on the wider sheet of ice. Their only loss was 6-3 at Northern Michigan during a non-conference matchup.
First on the Board

LSSU is 6-3-2 when scoring the first goal of the game this season. UAA scored the first goal during the Lakers' 4-2 comeback win, and the Lakers scored the first goal of the 3-1 victory for the Seawolves in January.

When their opponents score first, the Lakers are 4-15-2 this season.

Next week the Lakers host Upper Peninsula rivals Northern Michigan for the final two home games of the 2015-16 regular season. The Wildcats (13-11-6) enter this weekend with a 10-8-4 record in WCHA play and sit 5th in the standings.

Next weekend will also conclude the Cappo Cup rivalry series between the Lakers and Wildcats. The Lakers currently hold a 7-6 total-goals advantage with the series tied at 1-1-0.

Just remembered Globke didn't play Saturday. Is he in Damon's doghouse for the DQ penalty he got at Tech?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Probably. I didn't see any press release from the WCHA adding to his one game suspension so I assume he was a healthy scratch. Yeah, he took a high stick at Tech which the refs evidently missed, but I guess he just lost control which as a player you can't do without hurting the team. He must have really said something strong that upset the refs to get not just a misconduct but a 5 minute major for abuse of officials.
