Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Well, that's one way to put it. Kind of makes it sound worse than it really is, however.

Three months sounds like an awfully long time. The fact they've played six home games in that stretch makes it sound a little less ominous.

If you count the shootout, the last Lakers win at home was 12/4, v B.G.

If you don't count the shootouts, the Lakers have only lost twice at home since November 13th.

Semantics. :)

Not trying to be rude here lol but the Lakers have won 2 home shootouts since the BG ones in December, they beat MSU and WMU in a shootout at Taffy since the start of the new year...Interestingly enough, 6 of the last 7 games in the Soo have went to a shootout, I haven't looked it up but I would be inclined to believe that the Lakers have been in more shootouts than any other CCHA team since the rule came to fruition

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Lakers win 4-2.

Heckuva goal by Acton to put the Lakers up 3-2. Haines played some of his best hockey of the season. Even before his goal I commented to my buddy that Kyle was playing extremely well tonight. That was a much needed 3 points especially with NMU coming back from a big hole against MSU to get the sweep in Lansing. Next week is a huge series. Northern and Alaska are playing the bottom two teams in the standings so we're going to need to take care of business on the road.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Huge, HUGE win tonight. Hell of a shot by Acton and great goaltending again by K2. I don't what was up with Schofield taking all those penalties though. Oh well huge series down in Columbus next weekend. I think a split would be a success.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Great game last night; you can never leave the arena early thinking the game is over. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Alaska figured out to defense Schofield; hang all over him get him to react and then off the ice. They just made the choice Schofield was not going to be them; someone else would have too and Acton did the job. Alaska having success in dealing with Schofield other teams will follow suit; others will to need to step up.

Great job guys! Keep it rolling next week in Columbus!

I agree about Schofield it was crazy i never saw a call where two players are laying in the corner and they both get called for holding.

That last call was really the only poor call on Rick. He got hipchecked and upended a good 5-7 seconds after he passed the puck, he did nothing to warrant a call. I think the ref just looked over once he saw both players on the ice and assumed that the two were getting after each other. I thought he did take some dumb penalties earlier in the game though, all of his penalties came when the Lakers were in the attacking zone.

Did anybody else at the game notice how much jawing the Lakers were doing at Greenham? Both nights I noticed a few times throughout the game, specifically after goals and penalties, that a single Laker would skate over to Greenham and exchange a few words. Acton being the culprit on three occasions that I can remember. It seems like Greenham must've been talking some trash and the Lakers wanted to make sure he knew that he gave up a goal or that the Lakers were coming for him on the PP.

On a positive note, I thought in both games the defense had some great shots from the blue line. Trotman, Cowie, Perrault (Friday night) and Haines specifically took some really quality shots and against a lesser goalie all four could have had goals this series.

I'm not sure, the third call on Rick was a little cheap in my opinion, Rick had his head turned and bumped into the Alaska D-man, who was much smaller than him so simple physics won out and Rick stayed standing while the 'Nook defenseman took a spill, it was certainly incidental contact, and he was called for interference...I guess if you went by the verbatim of the rule of interference then Rick was guilty but in my opinion the "spirit" of the rule is referring to guys intentionally interfering or knocking over a puckless opponent, not that the officials did a bad job at all this weekend but I am certain that there are many officials out there who would have let that play go without a call...

The dual holding call was interesting, if he was going to give both players penalties I would have thought they would have been separate calls, two guys both holding constitutes a hug in my book lol...Although in the end it helped out the Lakers because if they were given different calls it would have been 5 on 5 but since they were both called for the same penalty it became a 4 on 4 situation and that opened up the ice for Acton's great shot moments later...as some others have said when it comes to Lakers home games the game seems like it is never decided until the final minutes or in a shootout, we haven't had a ton of success in the standings over the past few years but the Laker fans have certainly been treated to some dramatic finishes, and last night was yet another, the stands weren't full but you wouldn't have known it from the reaction in Taffy last night when Acton tucked that puck under the crossbar and celebrated in front of the student section, a moment like that exemplifies everything that is great about collegiate athletics.

Haines did have a stellar night, he has had a very solid season and has turned into a very dependable defender...The Lakers are losing a lot of players to graduation (Schofield, Acton, Nehring, Hobbins, Cowie, Stonehouse, etc.) The foundation of next year's team will be built around a solid defensive attack, with K2 manning the crease, solid stay at home defenders in Perrault, Bruneteau, and Sternberg and with Trotman and Haines supplying some offense from the blueline....if Monardo duplicates his form and McParland, Cassiani, Jean,Lain,Campbell, etc. can improve the Lakers should have at least a punchers chance in the majority of the games next year.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Regardless of the standings over the past 4 years I have been pretty excited to go to every home Lakers series, obviously some moreso than others, but I must say my anticipation level for this weekend's series my be higher than any other one during my time here...The Lakers have a chance to jump Alaska for 6th place and with a sweep put some space in between them and the 'Nooks...A big weekend could help us build even more momentum as the regular season winds down and the playoffs get going...It will not be easy as Greenham has been at times, the best goalie in the CCHA this season..the good news for the Lakers is that Kapalka also has held that title on some nights, with 3 shutouts in league play and with 2 CCHA goalie of the week titles to his credit this season. As far as how far the Lakers will go I hold the same opinion as many others, when the Lakers have the "A" team show up they can play with anybody, as the games against Miami and UMD have shown (among others)...Schofield, Monardo, Trotman and Acton are hot as they have been most of the season but some secondary scoring from the McParlands, Cassianis, Powers, and Cowies would go a long way towards helping the Lakers make a run this year.

Goals this weekend from Perrault, Stonehouse, Haines, and Nehring is exactly the type of secondary scoring I was referring to, the fact that the Lakers were able to pull 4 points out of this past weekend based largely on the offensive efforts of these players bodes well for a team shaping into playoff form

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

What a weekend for the Lakers. Wish I could have made it up there for the games it sounded like some really good hockey in front of some big crowds.

6th place and the Lakers win their final four games and we are looking at a first-round bye and a probably trip to Joe Louis Arena. Where are all the Jim Roque critics now? Now that they have reached double digit wins again this season I think with the improvement on the ice and off the ice he deserves at least 4 more years. Things are really going well.

The broadcast sounded great with three people in the booth with Mike Ellis and BMW. The nice thing is they get an even amount of air time between the three of them, which shows the professionalism and humility of Bill Crawford. The best part is having him play back his own goal calls at the end of the game. I could listen over and over again, his calls are that good. Great job guys!

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

I am not sure who is in charge of or how much influence the Lakers have when it comes to setting up their schedule but the ball has really been dropped on two occasions this year, the first being the Lakers having an away series during I 500 weekend which has been the case as well in past years...that is one of the biggest tourist weekends of the year in the Soo and my guess is that ticket sales would certainly take a large jump for that weekend...the only reason i can think of not having a home series then is for the fear of people under the influence coming to the game under the influence after the snowmobile race on saturday...

My response to that is 1. it's a weekend college sporting event, if anyone is naive enough to think that people aren't doing this already then the need a reality check and
2. there is a public safety officer manning every section of every home game anyways, most of the time they just stand there twiddling their thumbs, with this being a university who advertises their criminal justice program, these public safety officers should theoretically be up to the task of handling some potentially rowdy fans shouldn't they? It's not like alcohol is served at the games and if nothing else the rink would figure to be substantially louder.....

The second scheduling gaffe involves the series in two weeks with Miami... now hopefully the Lakers will wind up hosting a first round playoff matchup but nothing is guaranteed with that and certainly wasn't when the schedule was made up so why in the world was the Lakers final home series of the regular season, and most importantly senior night on Saturday scheduled for a weekend when the vast majority of students will be gone on the first weekend of spring break?? This years senior class involves many players who have recieved regular playing time for nearly all of their eligibility here, BMW is in the top 5 all time in several of LSSU's goaltending categories, Will Acton and Chad Nehring have made steady offensive contributions, Cowie and Stonehouse have been durable in manning the blueline and Rick Schofield has been the team's most clutch and consistent offensive performer all in the last 4 seasons..it is an absolute slap in the face to these players that their senior night and potentially their last game in Taffy is scheduled on a night when there will likely be less than 1,000 people in the stands, almost none of which will include students such as myself who have appreciated the efforts of these players during their time here...The only way (and it is a longshot) to rectify this situation would be if the Lakers could luck out and get 6 points this weekend to clinch a home playoff series, then the school could move the senior night ceremony to the Saturday of the home playoff series. This is not necessarily likely to happen but if the Lakers were able to clinch home ice this weekend then I would IMPLORE the school to make this scheduling change.

Correct me if I am wrong but.... who's to say, if they did go out and get 5 or 6 points this weekend that they wouldn't end up as the 5th seed and then be on the road after a bye week? My understanding is that depending on what WM and FS do, the 4th and 5th seeds are still up for grabs for LSSU. Only the 1, 2 and 3 seeds are out of reach as of now.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

The CCHA determines the schedule and allows for very little input from member schools. The schedule is set over a year in advance. Changing dates is very difficult as both schools have to agree on those changes. As to the I-500, it has not brought in more fans for home games in the past and has actually hurt the gate. It has nothing to do with drunk fans.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Some of the calls over the weekend were tough to figure out, but in general I thought the refs did a good job. Their influence on the outcomes of the games was minimal, and the games had a good flow. Often, the opposite occurs because of poor officiating. The stronger of the two refs is clearly the taller man (?shergott?). I have liked the way he has called games in the past. He is one of the few CCHA refs that is not intent on making it a non checking league.

I continue to be impressed with the Alaska team. They clearly are recruiting a smaller quicker player, as opposed to the Laker's coaches general preference for a taller, rangier player. They show great discipline, but do seem to lack scorers, like a lot of teams.

In addition to the previously mentioned Lakers, I think Hobbins and Jean were particularly improved this weekend. Jean seems to have found out how to better utilize his size, in combination with good skills. Hobbins has been very effective and smart on the ice. If the Laker program red shirted the freshman, as many of the other programs are able to do, I believe Hobbins would be a very sound player in his 5th year.

Good points. Plus, most colleges have the same Spring Break. As for the weekends before and after Spring Break, half of the teams are going to be home and half of the teams are on the road. What can you do?
