LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Last I heard a week ago was that the Norris was a go and it was sent out for bid to several construction companies. I believe the website is down because the original plans have changed so much that they needed to update it (that's my best guess). One of my blueliner friends said that Roque told them last night he moved summer camps around so that no one would be in the building the entire month of July. Unless they are lying to all of us (including Roque), sounds like it is coming this summer.

I heard from a recruit and his father who recently visited LSSU that it's a go as well.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

In all honesty, I'm not really looking forward to next season and my interest in Laker hockey is waning. The new league just doesn't excite me and I cannot get over the down feeling of never seeing the Michigans and other elite programs playing in our town. Many other fans that I know feel the same way and I'll tell you what, if the Lakers do flop next year and Roque is still the coach....the program will crash.

I am in agreement with the lack of interest. I doubt I will go to any home games next year except for BG, since I will be home in SSM for thanksgiving.

With some of the terrible reffing in college games I have been to this year (including those not involving the Lakers) my interest in college hockey in general is greatly decreasing as well.

I'm glad the Norris Center project is going through. Jim Roque is a man of his word and it's no surprise why the administration locked him in for three more years.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I think the new leagues are going to add so much cost to travel that the new leagues will be fighting just to break even. The reason MI and MI State left the WCHA back in the late 70s was travel cost and now they are back to those same places for league play . I think in a year or two,the teams will be sorry they broke up the CCHA and WCHA and formed that new league NCHC .

You are right on. There are teams that will incur 6 figure increases in their travel, most notably Western and Miami. There was a lot of chatter in Detroit that it may not have been the last hurrah for the CCHA after all.

Omaha, St. Cloud & Duluth are all 600 miles from Kalamazoo, or approximately 10 hours. I would think Western would fly to these 3 schools. North Dakota, Colorado College, and Denver would also be by plane.

In the CCHA they only had to fly to Alaska.

The Big Ten will have to add two teams to make scheduling easier -- "associate" members for hockey purposes. My first blush guess would be North Dakota and Duluth (North Dakota brings huge money, fans, and prestige -- and Duluth also brings a great program, stadium, and it's already a sort-of Big Ten affiliated school). Then the WCHA will recombine into an East and West Conference (to save travel money). Just my opinion.

Several things had to happen, regardless of the eventual outcomes: The CCHA had to die. The Big Ten had to have its moment (not that I agree, but it was a rumbling irritant for years). Mid-Range money-schools had to see how fa they wanted to push hockey -- I'm looking at the recent interest in spending money on hockey at Western as an example.

Just my opinion, but the reshuffle isn't over yet.

I was told the same. Project is set to begin construction but no way of knowing completion date. Good news.

I wouldn't expect the Big 10 to add non Big 10 schools for hockey only. When you'll have Ohio State flying to Rutgers and Maryland for women's softball, I don't thing these schools will be too concerned with a flight from Columbus to the Twin Cities for ice hockey.

actually there is a rumor that the B1Gs will add their first associate member--but that'd be Johns Hopkins in men's lacrosse. not happening in hockey.
John's Hopkins has more going for it than scheduling convenience: they'd be the sixth lacrosse school, creating B1G lacrosse; they've got 9 DI national titles; they're not in a conference; and they've got the academic rep (the CIC thing).
nobody brings enough to the table in hockey except NotreDame.

Probably. Just speculation. Personally I hope all the Big Ten schools fail, at everything, in every sport, every year, in every way. My dislike fo the Big Ten, and the overblown butt-headedness that is always attached to the Big Ten, is second only to my overall dislike for the CCHA leadership of the past 15 years.

My speculation is that a six-team league is a nightmare for scheduling, and it will get worse when they are farming in Colgate and Mercyhurst for home series -- while sticking to their arrogant Big Ten belief that they don't have to agree to any return trips. I hope this bites them, I hope that they all fail misrably. However, I think that in two years, they will have to bring in some associate members to pad out their schedule.

I am -- as noted -- just speculating.

Beautifully written!

I would not be surprised to see a B1G team such as MSU come up to the Sault for a home series in the next couple of years.

Nope. They will agree to a return trip to the Soo -- which will be played at Joe Louis. LSSU will be called the "home team" and slit the gate accordingly.

NMU and Wisconsin have a similar agreement for the next four years. They will play in Madison in 13-14 and 15-16, and in Green Bay with NMU as the home team iin 14-15 qnd 16-17. They have already completed one four series agreement. It wouldn't be surprising to see a similar neutral site agreement with UM or MSU.

There has even been talk of an agreement with Tech, NMU, MSU and UM where UM and MSU come up and play both Tech and NMU, Then Tech and NMU go downstate and both play MSU at the Joe and UM at Ann Arbor one year, and both play UM at the Joe and MSU in East Lansing in another. Lots of proposals are being floated around at this point. Not many of them favor the smaller schools and their home rinks.

Great Hockey this weekend at the Pullar. Should have more to come when the Eagles get rid of Port Huron.

So here’s a story. A once great college program loses it’s great coach and in doing all it can to remain on top brings in a controversial individual with a proven history of success. It is known that this person will have a difficult time holding it all together so he brings in a former player as an assistant that has some coaching experience but was not successful as a minor head coach. This assistant has visions of being the head coach and positions himself with the right people making it known that he wants to be the next Head Coach and can bring the program back to the Glory Days by restoring their once famous brand. He addresses differences he has with the direction the program is heading. Attendance drops, people are unhappy with recruiting and overall program direction and the controversial Head Coach is let go. There is no search committee formed and the assistant is primed to take over.

No, this is not our Lakers, I have been reading the Maine message board. This where it turns ugly. Popular opinion in Maine appeared to want a different guy and the administration wanted the assistant. The other is guy highly successful and qualified and well respected as a Head Coach. The demand for the other individual caused the Administration to slow things down and sort out how to implement their plan of naming the Current Assistant. They appointed the current Assistant the title Interim Head Coach and by doing so it looks like Maine lost the popular choice to Denver and it has created a revolt because of the delay in the process. Now the base is demanding a national search. The current Assistant is going public on message boards etc. to separate himself from the previous coach he worked for making known some of the differences in philosophy he had with the fired coach. People on the message board are posting that they don’t want someone that throws his boss “Under the Bus” as they put it, and are demanding a national search.

My question is, having lived this dream ourselves, would we Laker fans advise Maine to do a National Search or hire the assistant?
Read the Maine stuff and feel free to answer. It is good reading to watch someone else air their garbage.

National search. While it's not totally broken; there needs to be new blood brought into the system which would bring back the excitment to the players and fans. Putting seats in the seats.

Both Borek and Roque have not been successful at Lake State after being promoted from assistant.
