Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

What did Bill Crawford say last night about the Soo Greyhounds winning again ? It's good to see the Greyhounds back winning but it seems it took a coaching change to get them back on the winning track. Seems Bill may have been talking about the Lakers on that one.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Bill Crawford also made me laugh when he said something about people on the internet and town people saying negative things about the team as Bill was asking all night why don't they crash the net for rebounds or screen out the Northern goalie on shots. Seems Bill was wondering why the team played such a poor offensive game by allowing the Northern goalie a clear view of the shots taken against him. Bill, wasn't that a negative view of the team ?

I'm not sure what people around the Soo have been saying, but he may have been referring to the Truth Squad trio as far as the Internet goes.

I went to the Eagles game at Kalamazoo this afternoon. Eagles won 3-1. My first look at Tyler Marble. He had 36 saves and played pretty solid; the defense played pretty well in front of him, clearing out the front of the net, giving him good looks at most of the Kalamazoo shots. Not a lot of great shot opportunities by Kalamazoo, so it's tough to tell from one look how good Marble is. He made one very nice save with the blocker on a shot from about 15 feet in front of him; he gave up one juicy rebound which didn't wind up costing him.

Not trying to defend Roque's poor record, but its hard to compare the Greyhounds to the Lakers. The Greyhounds coach has to coach and thats it. The head hockey coach at LSSU has to coach, recruit, negotiate contracts with equipment people, work with students, basically run half of the stuff at the Taffy, etc. I would bet that Frank Anzalone and Jeff Jackson did half the stuff Roque does and spent a lot more time on coaching. Its a product of the way the Athletics department is run now vs 20 years ago and the financial situation. If I was a coach, I wouldn't even come here for $80K a year because its not worth all the extra stuff you have to do. And I can almost guarantee you LSSU isn't going to pay a dime more for anyone to come here, so no Andy Murray-type guy is going to step foot here anytime soon.

Western brought in Blashill and made it to the NCAA tournament, before going after a high profile coach. I am sure there would be some USHL coaches who would take the opportunity for 80,000, using the LSSU job as a hopeful stepping stone.

Blashill's starting salary at WMU was $175,000 then bumped to at least $250,000 after his successful first year. Murray, I believe, is paid $300,000.

I think it would take close to $150,000 to bring in a USHL coach.

Nice to see the Lakers get a big win and get home ice. 3 shorties in a game you never see. Congrats to Monardo on 100 points and Murdock for the shutout. I think the BGSU series will go three games, probably a toss-up who wins the series.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Great way to end the regular season with a home win shutout!!! BTW, anybody remember geting over 50 shots and still losing like we did Friday night? GO LAKERS!!! (on home ice too!!!)

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I have been to a few Bowling Green games and they will attack attack attack the net and never let up on pressure . Lakers have to bottle them up or be playing push back all night .

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I'm betting that Alaska and Michigan will win their first round series and the prize for the winner of the Lake State BG series is a trip to Oxford, Ohio. If that scenario plays out Notre Dame will host Michigan in the 2nd round. That will be interesting since both teams have come to life in the last few weeks.

first round series so the prize for the winner of Lake Stae vs BG is a trip to Oxford, Ohio the next weekend.

I try to remain positive. But does anyone else feel sort of like George Jetson on a treadmill right now?

That's pretty much it. Overall the talent level is improving, but every year we're still fighting for home ice in the 1st round of the league playoffs when the regular season winds down. With the exception of the one season where Jakaitis was hot in the CCHA playoffs, no trips to the Joe. At best, seasons where we barely get above .500, and we're not even reaching that mark within the CCHA. One has to wonder at what level the bar has been set and where failure to reach the bar requires that changes need to be made.

I wonder. It feels like the talent is better. The games are more enjoyable to watch. There are some legitimately high(er) end players in uniform. The program is stable, the funding is solidified, LSSU Hockey (and LSSU in general) survived 2009-2010's budget issues. There is certainly more to talk about regarding lines, players, incoming recruits, game plans, etc . . .

So everything on paper looks to be trending upward.

And yet, here we are . . . in exactly the same position as last year, and year before . . .

Again, I want to remain positive. I literally have no personal ax to grind other than wanting LSSU to win lots of National Championships.

Sometimes the coach who stabilizes the program isn't quite the man to lead a program to the promised land? I truly believe perhaps a question of where the bar is being set for the program. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result.

Oh, I know all the standard conversational points about "who would come here for the low pay" etc . . . I'm merely saying that we seem to be at the same level, every year. And is it possible that the current leadership simply cannot take th program further?

We will see. This team is certainly good enough to beat BGSU. But they are not a good road team . . . hopefully that also changes and . . . . well . . . I hope we catch some serious fire and storm the Joe one last time. Wouldn't that be great? One last massive Blue caravan flooding down I-75?

Anyone know who will replace Crawford next season? Perhaps the Eagles announcer John Bell?
I don't think we know for sure yet whether Bill Crawford will be back or not. It may very well depend upon whether Sovereign Communications gets the radio contract again. If they do, don't be surprised to see Bill back. If they don't, he probably won't be back. In that case, maybe it would be John Bell or Paul VanWagoner.

Bell did a couple of broadcasts 5 or 6 years ago when Crawford could not make a series in the the Sault due to family commitments. Bell was one of the worst announcers I have ever heard call a game.

While I'd love to see the Lakers make it to the Joe, I'd be a bit surprised if they get that far. Still, they only need to get hot for a handful of games. Once the season is over, undoubtedly there will be more discussion on the coaching situation, especially if they fall short of the Joe.
