Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

UAA released it's schedule for next season. We play them at Anchorage December 13-14 and they will make their first trip to Abel Arena February 7-8.

A trip to Alaska in December. There will not be a whole lot of daylight up there at that point in the year.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Steven Olesky is playing in his first NHL game right now and already has his first career NHL assist. He has two shots on goal and a blocked shot.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I've read that there will be three Bowling Green fan buses headed up to the Sault for this weekend's games.

Wow, Bill, you're asking me to dig deep into my memory bank to 1997 when Matt was a hot prospect. First and foremost, there is nothing like a four year "free ride". All scholarships are one year renewal awards.
As I remember it, Matt's first offer came from Bowling Green and the offer letter included a brief paragraph outining the full, one year scholarship. (Coincidentally, bot Ryan Knox & Matt got scholaraship offers from BG, with Ryan #1 and Ryan #2). I'll try to dig out the NCAA Letter of Intent Matt signed with Lake State, but it very well may make no mention of scholarship money. Matt, and I assume Ryan, were accepted to BGSU academically, and that was independent of the hockey program. The process may vary by school. For example, Michigan is famous for getting commitments when a player is a Sophomore or Junio in High School, using "bird dogs" like me to get the family to contact them, thus bypassiing the restriction of not directly contacting a student/athlete until July 1 of their Junior year, I'll do some checking and post any additional clarification I might find.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

First of all, how great is it to see Oleksy not only get called up but also notch an assist in his first NHL game, Oleksy was far from a flashy player and to be honest I was surprised that he had stuck in the AHL, to see him work his tail off and make it to the pros is just awesome, it has been a long journey for him and should serve as an inspiration to all of the longshot prospects out there, what a great story.

Now for the Marble issue, I am bothered by this whole thing, we have three goalie all who will be seniors next year, the third of which our coach has basically made it clear will only see the ice come hell or high water. Marble has been the top goaltender in the NAHL and has been committed to the Lakers for three whole seasons now and he now has decommitted because he didn't want to redshirt.....If truly the only reason Marble decommitted was in fact the redshirt issue then I think this falls 100% on Jim Roque. Why have a player taking up the third goalie position that is the same graduating year as the top two goaltenders if you are never going to play him when you could give that spot to an incoming freshman who is playing at a high level in juniors so as to avoid having to bring in three goaltenders brand new to the program the year after next? Roque obviously has no use for Ravn and has done him no favors thus far so why does he all of the sudden decide to do the kid a favor and keep him around another year at the expense of the program? Bill had mentioned that 3rd goalies probably don't have much or any scholarship money going their way, but even if Ravn isn't getting a dime you would think that Roque would have had the foresight to maybe shift at least a small amount of scholarship money around if he let go of Ravn to entice Marble to stay on...all of the goalies involved have been 'in the fold" for several years now and I don't understand how something like this had not already been discussed/taken care of.....Now, if there are other reasons involved for Marble decommitting, such as wanting a better shot at immediate playing time, got an offer from a bigger school, etc. than I absolve Roque, but if not then this takes my confidence level in JR down substantially, because this appears to be a case of mismanaging a program, and certainly something a coach who has been around for most of a decade should have learned to handle by now.

Can you tell us where you read this? I'm a reasonably well-connected BG fan, and have heard nothing of the kind. I wish it were true.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Can somebody up there offer any meaningful insight as to why you guys have such a severe difference between home and road record?

When you played down here (BG) a few weeks ago, you looked flat, confused and disinterested.

I'm expecting to see a MUCH better team is SSM. Should be a great series, probably will go 3.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

It's a Harlem shuffle thing with the students in C and D.

LSSU students plan to get into the playoff spirit Friday by participating in a Harlem Shake at the 10-minute mark of first intermission. Students are encouraged to wear humorous apparel and congregate in Sections D and E at the beginning of first intermission.

Bill, a friend who is a Women's Head Coach emailed me that it probably varies by institution what different university compliance officers consider a "binding agreement" on a scholarship offer but, generally, "anything in writing that expresses an offer of financial aid, books, etc. either in letter or Email form is binding with our institution". I guess I'm kinda surprised that most schools don't require
acceptance in writing too. OK?

AnchorsAway - I can assure you that there is more than just the "redshirt" issue (combo of the Kevin's probably not leaving and his good NAHL year bringing more outside interest). I won't get into specifics because it wouldn't be proper for me to post it (that's between LSSU and the Marbles). In the end, Jim Roque did what any good coach should do: respect the wishes of a student-athlete and whats best for him. There is no point to having a student-athlete come to your school who no longer wishes to be there. It would just create problems.

Lakers2Glory, thanks for the information, apparently there was more at play so I won't bag on Roque on this issue, it stills leaves us on the hook face the 2014 season to fill 3 goaltender positions, and I noticed in a previous post you mentioned that Marble has some maturity issues, so maybe it's for the best that he defected.

Regarding the series this weekend it should be a good one, BG has been playing better the second half of the season, maybe Coach Bergeron is starting to turn things around down there, he played for a minor league team in my hometown (Port Huron) in the late 90's and always seemed like a standup guy, coaching under Blasi at Miami I'm sure helped. People have made mentioned of the fact that a low salary could be one of the factors preventing LSSU from attracting quality candidates if they had a head coaching vacancy. I know Bowling Green's program was in dire financial straits a couple of years ago, does anyone know out of curiosity how much Bergeron makes?

He signed for six years, $125,000 base in 2010. Not sure how significant the incentives are, or if he's gotten any kind of raise since then.
