Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

It will be another year of double digit losses

Given that every team but 2 (QU, Gophers) had double digit losses last year, that's a pretty safe bet.

I like to read the boards of other WCHA teams, to see how things are going this year for Kato's competition, but the negativity and outrageously out-of-touch expectations on this one has pretty much exhausted my patience. Reality check - It's not 1988 anymore. You're a school of near-zero people, in a town of near-zero people, stuck in the worst weather in the Continental US (and much of Alaska, for that matter). First round draft picks aren't begging to join your team. You're not going to go 33-7 and cruise to a national title. And that's whether Jim Roque, Jerry York, Badger Bob Johnson, or St. Mariucci is coaching your team. Is Roque a great coach? I don't know, but probably not. But whoever you have in there, college hockey has changed appreciably since you were winning national titles, and it's a heck of a hill to climb for all the schools like yours and mine that the average, non-hockey fan has never heard of it. But can't you enjoy the ride just a little bit along the way?

Frank Anzalone is a perfect example of the change. Won a lot of games and a title his first time around. Couldn't get to double digits on the second run. You don't win league titles or even make middle of the pack very often when no one in the league has a smaller recruiting budget. You're right Purple, All Americans aren't lining up to come to the Soo or NMU or Tech. Hopefully in the new WCHA, where the budget and prestige difference is much narrower from top to bottom, the Lakers will have a better chance. Is Roque a great coach? Probably not. But I'm not sure who could have been a consistent winner under these conditions. Take a look at the rest of the athletic department. Middle of the pack at best in the D2 GLIAC. That should tell you something.

I checked the schedule and the first Notre Dame game in January, the Lakers will on national TV, on NBC Sports Network! Very cool!

That is cool but I'll be there watching any way.

Purple, most fans know that times have changed we all know it's not the 70's, 80's or 90's. The deck is stacked against smaller schools in todays college hockey. What bothers some or most fans is the inconsistent play of the team under coach Roque. That is hard for some outsiders to understand even Davyd who I respect and is a rivals radio man.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Why would a coach bring up players who are not there and tell everyone how much better the team would be if they will still on it? Imagine how much better the team would be if no one ever left .

Probably because people like you always complain that they do not recruit good players, when in fact they are recruiting players who have the opportunity to move on to the next level.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

It's the start of a new season and with that comes optimism. I am confident that solid goaltending and defense will buy time for inexperienced forwards to catch on and we will finish higher than the eighth place prediction. It is great to see so many players with ties to the Soo making it in the the NHL. Steve Oleksy and Will Acton were on opening day rosters last night for Edmonton and Washington and tonight former LSSU Assistant Ron Rolston made his first NHL Head Coaching appearance against the Detroit Red Wings while former Soo Indians players Ryan Miller and Drew Miller squared off for the Sabres and Red Wings. I also heard mention in the first period that former NMU goalie Jared Coreau was backing up Howard for Detroit tonight.
I'm sure PerkyforPrez will back me up that both Acton and Oleksy praised former LSSU Assistant Joe Shawhan for recruiting them to LSSU and it's neat to see two of Coach Shawhan's former goalies dressed in the same NHL game tonight. Next will be G.R. Griffins Coach Jeff Blashill getting an NHL job. Maybe Kyle Jean, or Ray Kaunisto will get a shot in the near future as well. It was also great to see Laker players at the United Way spaghetti feed last week. See you all this weekend at the rink.

Sorry for the misinformation. I just watched the end of the Red Wings game and Jared Coreau was not the back up tonight. The back up goalies name started with an M. I saw him on the ice at the end of the game.

Coreau was sent to Grand Rapids. Mrazek backed up Howard. Ray Kaunisto is in the ECHL. He's not likely to be an NHL player. May get another shot at the AHL.

That's odd. I keep asking how is it so many players from Lake State do go to the next level but at the college level playing for Roque they seem to have trouble putting together good seasons and so we have to ask again,is it the players or the coaching?

Forgive me if I chuckle when I see our fans are getting carping about the poor destination of our school from someone who lives in Nebraska; "Worst weather" is a matter opinion (you couldn't pay me to live in Florida), and the Soo is a hop skip and a jump from many popular destinations compared to the barren landscape between the Mississippi and the Rockies, you can have your prairie....Maybe you should pay more attention to the boards that you are reading, no one has said they are expecting the Lakers to return to the early 90's but night in, night out effort from our team and avoiding a late season swoon is not too much to ask, thank you very much.

I'm sorry that our board has "exhausted your patience", but please save the overtures for us to "enjoy the ride", this board has 53 pages worth of discussion from just this off-season, the most boring time of the year for this sport....If everyone on here wasn't "enjoying the ride" do you really think there would be a level of discussion on a fan level unmatched by all but 5-6 (if that) fan bases on this site?? Just because the tone of the conversation isn't always roses doesn't mean people don't enjoy to talk about it. Thanks for your comments, best of luck on what looks to be a heck of an upcoming season for your team, but don't critique the passion of the fans of one of the most historically accomplished programs in the sport, regardless of how mediocre our current team is.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Interesting comment from an outsider. I am a Laker fan (many decades) and post on this thread occasionally. I also read the threads of other league teams and a few others that interest me. I would agree with you.......this thread is one of the most negative on USCHO. A few (the Truthies) are motivated by their hatred of Coach Roque and some are just consistently and relentlessly negative (you know who I mean). It's fun to have a weekend where we sweep because they are no where to be found afterwards. It's almost as if they are unhappy we won.

You're right, the 80s and 90s are gone and it's a different world. Could we do it again? Sure, but it's a long shot. Don't know how long before we change coaches but the next guy won't have much of a honeymoon period.

Don't get me wrong. I would like to see us perform better and finish higher but at the same time I realize we have been where (1988-1994) few teams have been and that and those memories can never be taken away.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I don't think there will be any Inside Laker Hockey podcasts. Paul VanWagoner is no longer associated with LSSU.

Doesn't Crawford so a show with Jim Roque anyway? Why do you need 2 people asking the same questions of our coach? I am excited for the season to get started up there for Lake Superior. You people are smart to keep advocating for the coach and supporting him. Year 9 is going to be the best year yet under Jim Roque. Just you wait and see!!!!

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

It's odd. When Borek was coaching and the writing was on the wall that the team under his leadership was never going anywhere , it was almost 100 per cent of fans on here calling for his departure. Roque comes in and after 8 years of leadership it is pretty much certain the Lakers are never going anywhere under his leadership the tune has changed on being against him as most on here were against Borek. I guess if you like a losing coach you keep defending him and if you don't like a losing coach,Borek,Anzalone, you call for their departure.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

When you control the information up there, packs the forum with your buddies, no one dare challenge you on the team, up at that college, or in the media, makes the answer a little more clear. This forum is representative of that, and the vitriolic statements for anyone that dares point out what is actually happening on and off the ice.

Who posts more vitriol than you and your schizophrenic twin? You harken for the days of a guy who in four years couldn't win in double digits. Don't go away mad. Just go away.

Did I hit a nerve? I'll be right again this season, as I have been the year before and the year before and the year before and the year before and the year before and the year before and the year before. You have forgotten, this guy you speak of, also put your college up there on the map, building the program and winning a NCAA Championship, Coach of the Year, Hall of Fame Coach, very much responsible for two more NCAA Championships. I'll save the vitriol for your defense of this coach, early next season, when a couple people point out the reality of the season, and you people up there are once again trying to find different words to say what you have been saying the past eight season in your blind defense of this administration. Enjoy October!!!!!!

I think most of the Laker fans on here would prefer to see a coaching change.
