Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

It's odd. When Borek was coaching and the writing was on the wall that the team under his leadership was never going anywhere , it was almost 100 per cent of fans on here calling for his departure. Roque comes in and after 8 years of leadership it is pretty much certain the Lakers are never going anywhere under his leadership the tune has changed on being against him as most on here were against Borek. I guess if you like a losing coach you keep defending him and if you don't like a losing coach,Borek,Anzalone, you call for their departure.
This discussion has been beat up pretty good. It's fairly well known that the same group that was most vocal in getting rid of coach Borek is influential and supportive of Coach Roque. Not as a coach but as a friend. I don't think winning is the goal or expectation at LSSU but the students do go to class and graduate and are involved in the community. I think Coach Roque walks a tight line. Players don't overwhelmingly like him in fact virtually all that I have ever talked to dislike him and don't respect him but his program is clean and is a much improved product over what we had before in most aspects. Coach Roque has the right people in his corner. Those same people were alienated in the past. Pretty simple.
I am looking forward to seeing the team play Sunday. Hope the crowd is alright.

Why don't you know your facts before you rattle your keyboard? The Birmingham Bulls did not pull out and become the Toros. The Toronto Toros were moved to Birmingham, where they stayed until the NHL absorbed 4 of the 6 WHA teams. The ECHL Bulls were very successfull for several years, drawing 4 of the Top 10 crowds in ECHL history and routinely put 8,000+ per night in the house on weekends. Eventually the franchise was sold to a bad ownership group that ran it into the ground. Don't believe me, I'd be more than happy to put you in touch with coaches, players, the owner whom I just had lunch with a couple weeks ago and lots of fans I spoke with last weekend in Birmingham. there are at least two pro leagues currently considering the city according to persons I spoke with last week. As for Huntsville, pretty good hockey town too. Their SPHL Havoc averaged over 3,500 per night, about 1,000 more per night than LSSU. UAH averaged better than 2,000 per night in their CHA days, despite playing a lot of Saturday and Sunday afternoon games.

You are correct regarding the sequence of events, attendance is somewhat skewed.
Years 76/79 avg 8468,7718,6316 WHABulls ECHL years 92/01 AVG,
5306 6007 5772 5191 5089 4795 4457 4280 2598. The slide began in 94/95
Did someone buy a boat anchor ?

Charles Felix bought the team and brought the anchor with him. Numbers like 4795 and 4457 are pretty good numbers. After Felix bought the team was when the franchise crashed and burned. And I do know the sequence of events quite well from living in Birmingham and working for the team prior to its sale. There's very little you can tell me about hockey in that city that I don't know from personal experience and from knowing the people involved.

USA Under 18 team is very good. They have beaten top ranked big name schools before so a loss to them isn't the end of the world. Too early to tell whether this team could contend or be a bust. The real season starts next weekend.

One must also remember the lineup you saw today is not likely to be the same one you see for the opener, nor were the PP & PK. A lot of players on the bottom end of the roster saw a lot more playing time as coaches use the exhibitions to evaluate and decide who gets on the bus on who gets the coat & tie on game night.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Despite the loss on Sunday, I like a lot of what I saw. I liked the fact that they were shooting the puck much more often, especially on the power play. The PP looked pretty good and they had many good chances. USA is a much better team than most of the Canadian college teams, and they can skate and shoot better than most. They've also been practicing for a couple of months, and have some games under thier belt, where the Lakers are just getting going. I thought that Murdock looked a little better than KK, but both looked sharp for the most part. I think that Robert Morris will be a good opponant this weekend, and will test the Lakers. Should be some close games.

Just to be clear: I support the Lakers. I have no control over what teams they play, what league they play in, who the coach is, or anything else. The only thing I have contol over is whether my kids and I are in a seat watching them play, and rooting them on. Win or lose, it's a great way to spend time together, and better than them being in front of a tv, computer, or x-box.
