Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I think its time for the President and AD to fire hockey coach Jim Roque. His first 2 seasons he had were his best, because he inherited the team from Frank Anazlone.Since then his teams have been worse&worse with his own recruits, this year he even had the top scorer in the Nahl, playing here in the Soo but never even talked to him. When are the powers to be going to wake up and fire this clown. I would like to see a petition started and maybe send a copy to the Lssu board of Directors. Just remember when its time to buy season tickets, say no till they get rid of Roque.

Lakers have no one coming back next season that will make a difference in their play .

One of the funny things about Coach Roque is that this comment seems to pop up every year. And every year, the next line steps up -- a little bit.

We shall see.

In other news -- although I have happily long-ago blocked Truthy McBlabbermouth, I can still see when he has posted. I jave just blocked the content. However, I can guess at the content. I am pleased I am not reading the content. All of this to say: UP Statehood can't come fast enough.

Unless you can magically see into the future through your crystal ball, you have no basis for making that statement. Zach Trotman went from 8 pts his freshman year to 20 & 21 the next two. Who's to say Drapluk won't do the same? Domenic Monardo wasn't supposed to be a 20 goal scorer. He did. Guys will step up. They always do.

Will it be enough down the stretch? That is the question.

I'm not a psychic but the last 8 seasons with this coach at the helm might be the first clue. I know it is hard for a lot of you people up there to comprehend who want to block reality and defend this administration year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year despite eight seasons of lower half of the standings finishes, second half collapses, inconsistent play from Friday to Saturday, conditioning issues, dwindling attendance, playoff crowds in the hundreds, star players as scapegoats disappearing off of rosters, and excuse after excuse after excuse after excuse after excuse after excuse after excuse. Do your name calling and spew your vitriol, cause you Roque apologists with blinders on can't argue any of those points that you get tired of hearing.

Neither game reach 900 fans this weekend.
Are you sure? It seemed pretty close. It was fun either way and the beer was cold. Eagles are up against the wall. I hope we get one more game back here. Did anyone else go to the Championship game of the Tellus Cup yesterday? That was a fun afternoon at the rink.

I made it to one Eagles game this past weekend. There was probably about 850 fans by my guess. The beer was cold for sure! If only the stupid NCAA Presidents would realize that beer can be enjoyed responsibly during a sporting event we could have that at Laker games. I just heard Colorado State is putting in a brewery in their student center. I'm sure it's just for "educational" purposes :)

Bill probably has more information on this, but I think there is a limit to the number of games that the coaching staff can attend per NAHL/USHL team. I think they get a total of 7. If they go to a game, and talk to any potential recruits after the game, that counts as 2 of the 7. Could be that they already used up the limit for Soo Eagles games by the time the top NAHL scorer was in town.

This is true, but let's be honest, there are ways to "bend"those rules....as I believe Fricker has alluded to in the past, many programs have "runners" who are not officially connected to the program but who they stay in contact with, that they use to talk to recruits through....it already goes on, and in a town as small and as interconnected the Soo is, it would be very easy to use that method..what must also be acknowledged is that if this was happening, it surely wouldn't be widely advertised, so few would know about it.....point being maybe they are already using this method to "talk" to this kid and he just isn't interested.

newt-ski is referring to Jared VanWormer who plays for the Eagles. He will be playing his college hockey at Ferris. I don't know why the Laker coaches didn't try to recruit him. Perhaps they tried and he told them he wasn't interested in attending LSSU. It's hard to believe they would have just overlooked him. Maybe there is some other reason. Yes they are limited to how often they can go watch a player. The advantage of having the Eagles in town is they can go look at an NAHL player they are interested in at a very low cost. Not just any NAHL player, because several of the NAHL teams don't play in the Soo any given year, but it does give them the opportunity to look at some of them.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

A laker coach was heard saying he has no offensive skills! Jared Vanwormer ended up number one scorer in the league. They signed three other forwards from the NAHL. #20 scorer in the league/Clemment, #67 scorer in the league/Angus, and #109 scorer in the league/Miller. As they say 1+1=2.Here 20+67+109=NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP? As the thong says should he stay or should he go!

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

The Spring recruiting news release is out. The Alberta kid is Gus Correale of the Grande Prairie Storm, who we had previously talked about other than his name. The article also says there is a recruited walk-on D-man but doesn't mention his name.

Since the roster numbers obviously aren't adding up, we undoubtedly have lost a couple of additional guys (underclassmen) who were on the team this past season but won't be coming back.

The Coach's job is to project ability into the next level. Plenty of kids dominate at one level, but can't make the step up.

Just a completely random example: Kevin Brown.

Played for the Jr. Wings of the OHL in 1994, thereabouts. Brown was an OHL MONSTER. Tall, big, appeared strong, scored 134 and then 135 points, in back to back seasons.

Fourth round pick, not first round.

And he never did much as a pro. 67 NHL games, 7 goals, 9 assists.

Now this kid, in juniors, absolutely dominated he OHL -- which is one of the top junior leagues in the world.

The job of scouts and professionals is to not look at the stat sheet, but look at the skating style, hands, effort, etc . . . .

My point: Scoring in juniors is not always an indication that the player will score at the next level.

Are your comments geared to VanWormer or the list of recruits. It seems that what you are saying is that the Laker coaches project that their belief is that VanWormer will not produce as well at the next level than the 20th, 67th and 109th scorers in the league. Maybe it would be better to say that they feel he is not as good of fit as to what we need to replace, Lain, Robinson, Monardo and McParland. Time will tell. I'm glad he was good enough to fit into FSU's projections.
Regarding Lakers2Glory comment on Monardo, I think alot of people thought he could get 20 goals and remember, 2 years ago the Lakers thought they could be a top four team and the coaches said we would be even better last year. Has anyone heard where the coaches feel we'll finish next year?

If the coaches thought the lakers could be a top 4 finish 2 years ago and even better this last season and we know what happened there, why would anyone trust what the coaches have to say about this team. The Lakers lost more games this past season than they did in Roques first 7 seasons. Look who is coming back and ask yourself,do you really see a winning team there.

I figured Monardo would be a 20 pt scorer for sure, but that 20 goals plateau looked a little steep. Glad he proved me wrong.

I count six going out and 7 coming in (includes the walk-on defenseman). Who is missing?

You people up there will hear that again this year on here from the usual cast of Roque apologists. Then they are proven wrong for yet another season, and will make more excuses, point blame elsewhere, and spew more vitriol towards anyone who might challenge their head coach friend. If you don't believe that, go back to last season, or the season before that, or the season before that, or the season before that, or the season before that, or the season before that, or the season before that

6 going out: Monardo, McParland, Power, Wall, Lain, Robinson.

8 coming in: Johnson, Globke, Miller, Nardi, Clemment, Correale, Angus, plus a recruited walk-on D-man.

Roque likes a 26 man roster. 15 forwards, 8 D-men, 3 goalies.

I think we're actually going to have 2 more going out, one forward and one D.
