Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Think about it...............here we have a university in the North Country of Michigan whose flagship atheletic program is D1 hockey and we have a BB lady as Ad- it just doesn't compute and one big reason why the hockey program is floundering and there are student butts in the seat. Agree Lakerblue???

Could not have said it better myself (nor as briefly).

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Regarding Roque, I agree 100% with DM2SM.
With respect to the project, it is more about the alleged donors' initial objectives than about how the money is going to used.
About who has authority to decide what to do with Roque, the AD may have some advice to give, but the president is definitely protecting him for some reason.
Talking about entertaining games, and comparing Lakers and Eagles, it is actually surprising than none of all those watching practices have commented on the traditional can-am series a few weeks ago.
I wouldn't be surprised if any of the two teams would had done better in an official game than the standard team.
The Canadian group was all over the US team, but the latter won the series by far. So it was indeed entertaining.
Some may wonder, but there was certainly many lessons to learn (comparing with the intensity and inspiration during the season), but it is not sure that the coach watched the whole game from his office ... or could that be a reason ?

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Can I be honest: I don't trust AD Dunbar. It has been my experience that Basketball people tend to carry deep-rooted confusion, and some outright hostility, towards hockey.

In most high schools around the country, football and basketball are the Big Two sports. ESPN blabbers on and on all day, every day, 24 hours a day, almost exclusively about BB and Football. So the people who excel in BB generally have within them the feeling that BB is the most important Winter sport. Oh, there are kids who play hockey, and tennis, and run track, etc . . . . but the real top-dog athletes in high school are generally BB and football players.

And my experience has shown, that when BB people arrive in "Hockey" school, there is great confusion. A "Hockey" school runs against the normal national grain. And suddenly, basketball people are relegated. And I have noticed that they do-not-like being second-banana.

It worries me. It worried me when she was hired. It continues to worry me.

And I just don't entirely trust her to do the right thing vis-a-vis hockey.

One of the dumbest posts I have ever read. Do you realize she is married to a former hockey player and coach and her children both play hockey, not basketball?

You are trying to defend AD Dunbar but you are actually insulting her by insinuating that because she is married to someone who played hockey and has kids that play the sport that she would automatically eschew her own free will and instead be allowed to be boxed in by circumstances in her life as to the way she performs at her job....I'm not saying that I think the woman hates the sport of hockey but the FACTS are that LSSU has had subpar attendance for the past handful of years, that the administration has made no widely known effort to get students or townpeople out to the game and that there is effectively no "home ice advantage" presence at todays Laker home games. AD Dunbar may love the sport of hockey but judging strictly by her objective actions as AD there has been a glaring dearth of action on her part and here department's part to rectify the aforementioned problems. To give my best attorney impression: "these are the facts of the case, and they are indisputable".

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

While we are on the topic of AD criticism, has anyone else seen the heat that the UAA AD is getting?? Public condemnations from both the UAA Hockey Alumni group and the state's amateur hockey association?? Ouch

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Anchorsaway..............actions speak louder than words - what has the AD done to address the lack of support for the university's only Division one team? Name one thing, please.......

Yes, I have read both the Maine and UAA threads and have commented myself on the similarities. If you read back, it started as ours looks right now. Non-Supporters of the Coach blamed him for the problems while supporters of the coach blamed the A.D. . When both coaches were terminated the focus shifted to the A.D. from both sides. It seems both A.D.’s are in trouble and may have waited too long to make the change to save their jobs. It will be interesting to watch. In comment to Mr. Fricker, when was the last time you were in the Soo? Mr. 3dognight answered this question last summer by stating that the private donor group alone had already put over $250,000 into promoting University Athletics over the previous 7 years. That’s at least $35,000/year. With the connection between Coach Roque and the donor group one would have to think there was open communication between he and Mr. 3dognight to get the most bang for their buck for Laker Hockey. There are game promotions that you would not know about because you are not from here. Why are you so critical of our A.D.? Do you know something we don't because most of us think that wins would solve our issues. I think Maine and UAA feel the same. Please share.

Just to add to the UAA discussion, from what I was reading it sounds like the A.D. at UAA put a bunch of non-hockey people on the coaching search committee. I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back. No one seems too happy with the interview candidates they selected.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Did anyone go to the Blueliners banquet last night? Thanks to all of them for putting that on. It's always a treat.

Coach Roque made it a point during his speech to tell everyone that "there is no bigger supporter of Laker Hockey than A.D. Dunbar.....and.....her door is always open to hear ideas that people may have". I'm not sure if that was just something he said from the heart or if he was aiming those comments at people on here. I would HIGHLY doubt he has ever read any of this, but maybe someone mentioned the comments to him?

Kellan Lain made some comments that made me think he is not enjoying pro hockey as much as he thought he would. I think the business side of the pro game really came as a shock to him. I hope he can battle hard and make a long stay at Vancouver!

You people up there know, this coach takes aim at anyone that dares question or challenge him, ask some former players, and current ones, who have fallen out of favor. So I would HIGHLY say he not only reads this but instructs his small army of good ole boys uppers and apologists on here to what to say. When you have 8 seasons of lower division finishes, second half collapses, playoff embarrassments, dwindling attendance, playoff crowds in the hundreds, and a totally complacent attitude and administration, its no wonder Roque would be sucking up to the AD that help get him a three year contract extension, thanks to the strings set by his "unnamed donor" friend who is no where to be found, but the project all of the sudden set to begin, knowing his buddy got a three more years of more of the same. Blah ha ha ha ha ha

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Since the subject of contributions to LSSU athletics, especially hockey, is of current interest, let's not forget the $200,000 hockey endowment that Doug Weight made to LSSU several years ago. Kudos to Doug Weight, and since this occurred during Frank Anzalone's second stint as Lakers coach, kudos to Frank for helping set it up. Wouldn't it be nice if guys like Jim Dowd and Brian Rolston (or other former Lakers) would do something similar?

Here's an old news article about Weight's donation: http://www.lssu.edu/whats_new/articles.php?articleid=359

Fricker I think you must have misread my post.....I'm agreeing with you saying that AD Dunbar has done little to nothing to address the lack of support for Laker Hockey.....I was just telling DopeyBaker that just because she is married to a former hockey player and has kids who play hockey that she doesn't get a free pass from criticism regarding the hockey program.

The comments on this page merely mirror comments made throughout the year in LSSU circles. As well as calm those concerns regarding the AD, I suspect the Coach's remarks regarding Dunbar last night were more likely made in conjunction with the heated UAA issue -- wherein a Basketball-biased AD at a D-II school has been failing to provide adequate support for the D-I hockey program. The similarities, on their face, could be viewed as similar. (I would also note that there are similarities in Denver, too -- wherein a female basketball-centric AD forced out the very powerful hockey coach). And it appears that Coach Roque is probably seeking to end those negative comparisons before they gain local steam. Roque and Dunbar need each other -- because as the lost seasons pile up and the seats stay empty, there should eventually be tough questions to ask. If the AD isn't goint to ask -- and if the Coach isn't being asked -- then they can form a unified front.

Funny, you take aim at anyone who dares to question you. And if you're going to insult Yoopers, at least spell it right, or are you popping too many uppers for your rants? If you have such a problem with those in the UP, why bother with us? Stay in your little troll fantasy world where washed up coaches who haven't been winners in a generation, fourth line studs and third string goalies lead their team to the promised land. Roque certainly hasn't won enough, and a change might be a good thing, but your incessant, broken record of disappearing comments and dual identities are an even bigger joke than what you perceive to be the state of the program!

Some of the other players who played 8-10 years in the NHL would be John Grahame and Bates Battaglia.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Unless the AD is putting together cardio programs and strength programs and practice sessions and game plans and deciding who gets recruited and who doesn't ,the rise and fall of Laker hockey is all on the coaches shoulders and that coach right now is Roque .

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I think its time for the President and AD to fire hockey coach Jim Roque. His first 2 seasons he had were his best, because he inherited the team from Frank Anazlone.Since then his teams have been worse&worse with his own recruits, this year he even had the top scorer in the Nahl, playing here in the Soo but never even talked to him. When are the powers to be going to wake up and fire this clown. I would like to see a petition started and maybe send a copy to the Lssu board of Directors. Just remember when its time to buy season tickets, say no till they get rid of Roque.
