LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

I don't really consider that poaching. We had a chance to offer a kid a D1 scholarship instead of him playing for a D3 school. If we had went to a D1 school two weeks before and stole him away, then you would have a good point. I've never heard a player in my life say "I'd like to play for a D3 school instead of a D1 school on scholarship".

Tech had a similar situation with Pete Rouleau in 2006. We'd originally offered him a scholie, which he declined only to get no other offers from D1 schools. So he landed across the Portage at Finlandia for a year, then Russell told him he could walk-on at MTU after sitting out his transfer season. So after blowing off Tech the first time around, he jumped at the chance to move up from D3 later. Almost all these kids would gladly play D1 if given the opportunity.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Is it normal for a D1 school that can offer scholarships to poach a committed player two weeks before classes start? Seems like a shady thing to do. Although I am glad they took him away from a rival (D3) school. Good for the player, not so great from a coaching moral standpoint.
Classless, to say the least, but if Jim Roque has scruples ... what would he have left.
If you mention moral or ethical standpoints to Mr. Roque, he will just laugh as he couldn't care less. Why should he, since has been able to get away with it so far, and the administration seems to be happy with his efficient and smooth handling of touchy situations, without wondering when they will surface.

At least there is no credibility to be lost anymore.

By the why, wasn't Opie (lightly) recruited through Roque's personal network to fill a gap at the offence during the next season ?
He won't be there; someone said here he didn't want to play anymore ;-)
Perhaps the trend in progress following the Penn State crisis has some influence.

It sounds like the LSSU coaching staff landed some nice players late in the recruiting process. If you're a true Laker fan, you celebrate this news. If not, you post garbage like this.

Agreed. I don't know about anyone else but I looking forward to October 6th. It may be an exhibition game but it will be nice to see them on the ice again.

Typical comment, but why is slandering a player is ok -even admitting having no clue - but condemning wrong habits is garbage.
As a true Laker fan, I regret that those lousy tricks are giving the team a bad name, which we will pay for sooner of later, and also affects the state of mind on the team.

One coach had done his job properly and honestly with a player, another one just behaved as a boor.
When fans focus on Ws and Ls and new painting in the locker room but turn a blind eye to immoral or illegal behaviours going on, that's when coaches go beyond limits, causing damages to the team and the school in the long run, and scare the so called "donors" away.

This is not about one win more or less from one season to another, but about having a Vision, building a reputation and inspiring current and future players.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

DIII coaches will tell you that they really don't know who will honor their commitment until classes start. Afew are known for over-recruiting, but most only commit to a few more than they need to fill out their rosters. Therefore, it is not totally unusual for a DIII player to sign a D1 Letter of Intent just before classes start. This usually is due to D1 commit making a last minute decision to go
Major Junior, leaving a spot/scholarship for the DIII commit.

Very true.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

You are correct LakerBlues, it is about all of those things, but to say Coach Roque is doing illegal acts is a very serious accusation. I hope you can back that statement up. Im not saying your incorrect. I, personally, need evidence to lay the guilt hammer down.

As far as immoral goes, that differs from one to the next. Some people feel snatching a DIII player up right before class starts is immoral. I disagree. I feel that ridiculous coaching salaries in college athletics is immoral (I love Tom Izzo, but is he really worth almost 700k?), but there are many who disagree. Just a matter of perception.

Jusy FYI: "Lakerblues" is just "Truth By Many Names." He is talking to himself. Any conversation you have with him is like speaking to a brick wall. Obviously just my opinion.

This guy hates Jim Roque. He is willing to create multiple user names and pops up any time there is any half-decent or interesting news about LSSU -- and talk about how much he hates Jim Roque.

News to Truthy and all your associated personalities: We get it, you hate Jim Roque. Noted.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Interesting early season schedule.

A tough home and home against Tech to open the books. Tech is much improved, and frankly should be even better this season with some good talent returning and better talent arriving through the pipe-line. It will be itneresting to see if the Lakers are matching Tech's progression. Too hard to tell much of anything the first week of the season, and the Lakers will surely be juggling the line combos to replace some key missing forwards. A very interesting measuring stick right out of the gate.

It gets equally interesting the next weekend with a trip to scenic Bemidji. Back to Back weekends against future Big Snow Conference rivals. Three of the games on the road. BSU is another team against which LSSU can measure itself. BSU came into LSSU last year and battled the Lakers for every inch of ice.

Then its home against Michigan State. First big league weekend. First big crowds. The Lakers will need to put the lessons of Week 1 and Week 2 into practice. MSU isn't that great, wasn't good last year, and hasn't been impressive for a few years. Last year the Lakers got a big boost beating up on MSU. And frankly, as always, I wish nothing but pain and suffering upon anything related to the Big Ten, or frankly any institution south of Pellston. Call me an old grump, but I just sort of hate most of the Lower Penninsula. Statehood for the UP can't come fast enough.

Then another Big Snow Conference future match-up, and again on the road -- to Fairbanks. And yes, another chance to measure LSSU's level against like-situated foes. I am not going to take the time to look up the records, but it seems to me that the Lakers don't suffer too horribly at UAF.

Home against Ferris. Who knows what Ferris has left in the tank, or on the bench. I have no clue. They can either be great, .500, or terrible. It never seems to matter when the Bulldogs comes to the Soo -- its always a tough weekend for the Lakers.

Home against UAH. On paper, this should be two wins. Anything less would be upsetting.

Ohio State. Big Ten Bad. Big Ten can go to deep dark fire-infested places. I am less inclined to hate OSU only because they hate U-Michigan perhaps more than I. And the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Either way, I want to sweep their Big Ten rumps out of the Soo. We'll see . . .

Back on the Road to Our Lady. Not to open a huge can of worms -- but what is happening at Notre Dame hockey? Nice arena, although nothing in the North Dakota-Denver-CC-Omaha-Duluth "amazing" catagory. Heading to Hockey East to foster closer ties with fellow Catholic power BC. Odd they don't win more. Or maybe its just my perception. As an LSSU fan, I admit I would gladly take Notre Dame's past five seasons instead of what LSSU has put up the last five seasons -- so its all perspective. But I guess there was a thought that: "Once Notre Dame puts money into hockey, its going to be a national power." And that really hasn't happened. Either way, tough road trip for the Lakers. Always is.

At Miami. Last year LSSU caught Miami in an early season struggle. No such luck this year. Back to Back TOUGH road weekends. Split the four game ND-Miami trip, and the Faithful will be pleased.

Home against NMU. Toss out the records.

And that takes us into Christmas.

The win last February at Alaska was the first time the Lakers won a game in Fairbanks since 2000.

Wow. I did not realize that. I always thought they played OK up there. Wierd perception. OK -- so now they have to win in Fairbanks. Start a new trend.

I didn't look back over the records, but they have had a lot of close games up there over the last 10 years and I think a few ties mixed in. It's not like they haven't had their chances.

Yeah, it seems like they have tied 5-6 games in Alaska over the last 10 years. As others said, lack of goal scoring cost the Lakers some close games up there.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

The Alaska trip is a tough one................a split is "OK" cuz we usually get sort of a "ref job" if we win the first game. It takes 2-3 weeks to fully recover from that road trip with the travel &
three hour time change. It's too bad both Fairbanks & Anchorage aren't in the same league cuz that would make for a neat two week trip!

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

You people up there and your constant vitriol for a Hall of Fame Coach in Frank Anzalone is pretty disgusting, if not sad. Soon you will be blaming everyone and everything for another bottom division finish, low attendance and more of the same, even having the gaul to point the finger at former great parents and unbelievablely their parents. I'm done wasting my time here with you people. Enjoy another season of playing the what if and blame game. You are so predictable.

The Truth Is Out There....
TBA

I predicted this post.

Frank Anzalone is the reason I struggled in high school algebra.
