Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

I did some digging. The last really upper-level center the Lakers had was possibly Terry Marchant in 1997-98, with 39 points in 37 games during Borek's second year. Joey Blaznek put up nice numbers in Borek's first year -- 22 goals and 24 assists -- but he was a winger. Before that, Bill, you are correct: Clayton Beddoes in 1994 with 23 goals and 31 assists.

Don't look for any upper-level centers in next season's recruiting class. Cassiani is the only forward we lose to graduation and they already have a forward verbally committed for next season (Matt Johnson - Amarillo - NAHL). I don't know much about Johnson other than his size and stats, but haven't seen anything to indicate he's the type of top-line center we're looking for; he very well may be a winger as far as that goes.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Matt Johnson is a left wing for amarillo judging by the videos i've seen of him and i think that's why Jim is bringing him in. because jean went from LW to center this year i think they needed to bring in a true left wing. because after next year when mcparland leaves who's going to put up points on that side of the ice?

Sounds logical for Johnson, although I don't know if they are as concerned about left vs right wing so much as just getting the best winger they can. After next season they'll have 3 forwards to replace McParland, Monardo, and Power (really 4 if you count Wall, although he hasn't played much), so they'll have more recruiting work to do at that position then than they do for next season.

Do the Lakers have any other players in the pipeline long-term? I mean -- guys who were recruited two years ago who don't enter college until 2012 or 2013 after some junior seasoning?

Only goalie Tyler Marble, who committed to the Lakers about 3 years ago, and that was probably because he had some prior connection to Roque. I think someone posted that his dad knew Roque, or something along those lines. They are certainly looking at kids who will still be in Juniors for at least another year and therefore possible recruits for 2013, but they have no other future commitments (2013) at this time. I don't know if it is strictly a lack of funding issue or what, but the Lakers are one of the very few teams who don't seem to regularly play the "futures game", getting commitments from players for the out years beyond the next season. Why they don't play that game more would be a good question for Jim Roque on either The Laker Hockey Show or the Inside Laker Hockey podcast. There have been a few exceptions. In addition to Marble, Kelin Ainsworth committed a few years early; in his case, he committed after playing for former Laker Jamie McDonald at a prep school in New Brunswick. He then played 3 years of Junior A before coming to the Lakers this season. I would be surprised if they don't redshirt him since he has only played in one exhibition game this season, unless perhaps he doesn't want to be. Also, I think Kellan Lain committed pretty early. He also played one more year in Juniors than originally planned due to a severe hand/wrist injury (cut by a skate). Marble would probably prefer to come in next season, but I doubt that will happen unless Kapalka turns pro. I think Roque prefers he stays in Juniors for one more year so he can get playing time.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

It is appalling to see how you speak of and treat a former player, whatever the stats say or his experience at lake superior state. I understand you will defend the current coach no matter what the record, background and history but you should be ashamed of yourself to pick on a former player and family.

OMG... Now you really don't expect anyone to think this is not one of the Smellers clan do you?

Thank you! I hope it will help stop some of the vitriol and ignorance on here on subjects they have no idea what they are talking about.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Got to give credit to NMU they were the better team from the start to the end. I didn't see them take one shift off. The refs sucked as usual but the blame goes to the coach and players. One of the worst games i have ever seen the Lakers play expecialy when they had so much to play for. Very very hard to watch for sure.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

That performance Friday night by your little college was as solid as a Roque. Looks like another lower division finish and early playoff exit. Who you going to blame and make stuff up about now squid? You people are so predictble.

First of all I am not a Roque fan. However, in last year’s playoffs they sweept OSU 2 games to 0 and lost in 3 to Notre Dame and I believe the 3rd game was a loss in OT. It was a pretty darn exciting run. So it was not a quick out as you hope for.

The end has not been written yet this year. If they can pull off a win tomorrow night and with a little help they could end up in 5th place with a by for the first round. Even if they end up in 6th place it is a home series and it sure is better than 9th as they were picked to finish.

The games I have seen this year they were always busting their tails, which says a lot about the kids on the team. This is why I respect them and enjoy rooting for them.:)

I’m looking forward to a good playoff run. If you look at their record this season they rarely win the first game of a series (6-11) but normally win the second (13-4) after making adjustments. So I think they are very capable of going a ways in the playoffs by winning the 2nd and 3rd games.

When the playoffs are over with we can discuss the future of Roque. But for now it’s LET’S GO LAKERS!

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

9th place is now breathing down the Lakers neck. Sure hope Miami or Michigan State can help us if we end up getting swept.

Lakers will rebound on Saturday, they have all season. Let's hope the feed is better tonight for the out of town listeners. Last night was terrible and it kept cutting out and at times didn't work at all. I may find the Northern feed anyway and avoid the hastle. Getting old and tiring that is for sure.

Coach Roque will have the boys ready tonight!

LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Laker54 - re your "playoff rush", didn't you mean "rush from the plaoffs"?.......With a few more sluggish efforts like last night, they'll be on the golf course before the frost is out of the ground in the Soo.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

I sure hope the Lakers can respond tonight, but it will be tough. Looks like Jean is suspended tonight. The injury to Monardo also looked pretty bad. I don't think we will see him the rest of the year.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

I hope he has them ready tonight because he sure didn't have them ready last night. 54 game three against the irish was a one sided contest last year. It was game one that the lakers got beat in ot.

I'll admit I can get down on a performance or out come of a game or season but generally I am an optimist. You can't throw in the towel yet; otherwise let's not have the playoffs at all.:

My mistake thanks for the correction. My point is they made a series out of even know they lost in 3.
