LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

I think the Hill's long-standing push against partying has made on-campus weekends a less-attractive alternative. I don't know, perhaps a few current students could give us an inside glance? I know that when I was in school, the party started on Thursday night and stretched well into Sunday, with very few stops inbetween. But I also know that the hockey games were so important that people planned their trips "home" around the weekends without hockey games.

(As I recall from my days on staff at the Compass that LSSU, NMU, and Tech were given honorable mention as the nations "top party schools," by Playboy, except, "Playboy has to exclude the schools of Michigan's Upper Penninsula, because the magazine didn't except professional entrants." I believe that was in 89-91 era?).

Anyhow, winning is everything. Winning = butts in the seats. And the team IS winning, for now. But what will real seal it for the students and curious fans is winning in Detroit in the CCHA Finals, winning in the NCAA, seeing our boys rpresenting our university on TV in the Tourney. What will seal it for the students and many fence-sitting fans is winning when you are surrounded by mouthy Detroiters and MSU and UM fans. Winning when UM fans denegrate your school's and your own person academic standards. Winning when school pride is most acutely felt. I recall the enormous pride I felt in 92 in Albany, when our little sliver of LSSU fan sat in a sea of red Badger fans, who catcalled us, called us a community college, said "Send me your resume, I'll see what I can do." And we beat them. And a small army of LSSU fans marched through the streets, defiant.

The passion will come to our current students when they put their hearts on the line and are fully repayed by their hockey team. I understand where many of the students are coming from today --- this hockey program has never given them a chance to put their heart and soul into the school --- and it has ergo never repayed the students with that oh-so-satisfying feeling of beating the mouthy arrogant jerks from down below. A few nice wins here and there is not enough to bond a student body to its team.

In many ways, LSSU hockey has always been tied to its students and its town. LSSU hockey has never been about stud-super-stars and blue-chip 18-year-old-phenoms playing up-tempo hockey. Its about somewhat older players, many passed over by other programs, former captains of juniors teams in Saskatchewan who played 3-4 years in juniors. Its about tough, hard nosed kids who find a home at a tiny school clinging to the edge of civilization on a snow covered wind-swept hill. The students who attend LSSU are often people from small towns, mostly from northern Michigan. They don't study latin and english and history (some do . . . ahem . . . like myself) but most study practical application studies: forstery, fresh water fish, law enforcement, accounting. Some of the smartest people I've ever met were students at LSSU, but they don't much care for the larger cities and larger schools. The Soo and LSSU fit them. So it is with the hockey team.

And when the hockey team wins, it can be a validation and vindication for all the students at the school. The hockey team wins with tight defense, hard work, good goaltending, and more hard work. They aren't pretty. They aren't sexy.

I think you'll see a slow, steady uptick in attendance all season. But the real games are played in February and March.

As a very former student (graduated this past spring) I can tell you that the powers that be at LSSU certainly do all they can to push against drinking on campus, especially the joke of a Public Safety department. Through different channels of communication many students at LSSU are aware that Lake State used to be quite the party haven back in the day and quite frankly are ****ed that the school made the changes it did. One of my biggest pet peeves is when folks try to change who they truly are and that is precisely what Lake State has been doing. They need to realize that if they quit trying to fit the square peg in the round hole and accept that they are a small school with alot of people from rural, middle class settings going to school for practical majors who like to drink their share of beer and have a good time doing it as their students...it's not like this is a school where there are lots of high flutent rich pre-med and pre-law kids who are going to spring for a bag of cocaine on a weekend, or that there is even danger of there being a major drug problem on campus. When the drug of choice on campus is a 24-pack of beer for the weekend, your college could have worse problems.

This isn't to say that Lake State needs to be irresponsible or that they have to necessarily promote things like this, they just have to stop going so far out of their way to paint this picture that they absolutely in no way want to be consider a "party school".

Central Michigan University is a perfect example, they are the "it" party school as far as colleges go in Michigan, CMU still makes commercials and runs ads promoting their campus and different programs just like any other college knowing full well that a very high percentage of their students chose that school in at least in part due to their status as a great party school...CMU still has a public safety department and they still address issues of alcohol-related incidients but they deal with them as they come, they don't go looking for that fight like is the case at LSSU...you can say what you want about being pro-active but I don't know of a single person who has ever been persuaded out of drinking after hearing a speech from a college public safety official. If the hill loosened up these reins and word got out about what a great kept secret the Soo is as far as fun college towns go you would see enrollment start to sizably increase....

With all of that being said, the state of the current night life in the Soo could be worse, most of the bigger parties are still held either in the townhouses, or in the area of Sheridan and Eureka streets (Just last year I lived in the last house on Sheridan before the townhouses on the corner of Sheridan and Meridian and heard a few stories about crazy parties held at that house years ago, it was pretty cool). The bar scene is certainly alive and well, on any weekend the Downtowner, the Frog, and the Savoy are usually packed the whole night through. while Moloney's, the Soo Brewing Company, The Alpha, and the Corner Pub are all popular places people will usually stop for a half hour or so but not post up at. The Bird, Zims and the Captains Pub have their niche crowds as well. The Downtowner is still the place to be after a home hockey series, as that is where the team spends most of their night and from 11 oclock on it is hard to even walk thru it is so busy. All in all if you want to, you can still have a blast of a time in Sault ste Marie ( I know me and all of my friends did) but it could be better for more if LSSU would stop refusing its true identity

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Good post, and I can remember plenty of great parties while my wife was going to school there (I'm a Coastie with no "actual" ties to the Soo or LSSU, although I do plan on retiring to Brimley) and I know that I spent more than one night passed out on some couch in someone else's house, sometimes the occasional frat. Point being, in my opinion, you are only young once, and you should definately take advantage of it. Before you know it you are in your 30's with a couple rugrats and in bed by 10 because you have to work in the morning, wondering how the hell you managed to shut down the Back Door on a thursday nght and still make it into work and function the next day.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

There is a free video feed for the Thursday game against Vermont next week. The web address for the feed is: http://nsnsports.net/uvm

Thanks Laker Dude that is great news. Coach Roque is going to have the boys flying this second half and I expect the Lakers to stay in the top four of the standings and make an appearance at the Joe Louis Arena. May have to make the trek north for that one.

Go Lakers!

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Thanks for the link. The video is pretty good....especially for free!!

Lakers were down 2-0 after the first and now lead 3-2 after the 2nd.

The video feed was pretty good. Looks like tomorrow's game is also available. Nice to see the Lakers start the second half with a win.

Nice win for the Lakers down 2 and they just went about their buisness. I watched part of the Ferris game so i'm sure the Laker game will be streamed tomorrow.

I thought the feed was good also. Nice win by the Lakers tonight. Keep it going against RIT. I suppose any win is good for the pairwise especially against Rit who has a winning record. Nice start to the second half of the season.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Good win by the Lakers last night. It should be a great game against RIT this afternoon. I was suprised to see they shut-out Ferris, and we know the Bulldogs are a pretty good hockey team. Go Lakers!!!!

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

Nice come from behind win on the road after a long bus trip. Nice to see the offense score five goals which means the Lakers have scored 11 goals the past two games after a stretch of not scoring much. Hopefully the offensive momentum continues today versus RIT.

Even though Vermont is a bit down this year, a very nice win to start the second half of the season. There are some on here that think and even want a second half slide, but it isn't going to happen this year. I think coach Roque has them ready to make their first NCAA Tournament in many years, at least since I was up there in the mid-90's. Correct me if I am wrong.

Glad there is another video feed tonight. It would be nice if more universities provided this, free of charge, in the future. It is 100 times better than the alternative.

Go Lakers

Who ??? Besides the obviouse one in truth squad i just don't understand where your constant barbs are intended to go. There are a few people that were ready for a coaching change ( I was one I admit ) but to want the team to lose wow i never seen this on here.

The team is doing great this year and everyone involved are doing a great job coaches, team leaders, role players and Bill C.

I am a Laker hockey fan and want to see the team do well simple as that if it happens to be under the helm of coach Roque then i have no problems with it.
