Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

True enough. "Administrators" need to justify their jobs by "Administrating."

And I didn't mean to imply that Soo Ontario offered nothing in those days. I personally wandered through many of the beer distribution centers in my time. Today, however, there is a more interesting selection of dinning choices beyond the Swiss Chalet. And if you're talking about Canadian fans and season ticket holders, you're likely talking about people who are out of college. Family people. And since the Greyhounds have a nice new rink and its a generally positive family atmosphere, many Canadians may just prefer to stay home -- get chicken pot pie at Swiss Chalet and hit the Greyhounds game.

And darn it all, before anyone jumps on that, I still love the Swiss Chalet -- the Swiss Chalet for lunch on a cold winter day is almost unbeatable. Personally, I like to hit the Chalet after a good day of skiing with the family.

LOL I got a chuckle out of that. I do recall that there was not much in the way in terms of restaurants. Hell, we would just eat at Time Out.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

They were the glory years not only for the hockey team but many of us student-fans as well.....on the weekends after the games, there would be line-ups out of every club (the Pioneer, the Back Door, Alpha-addition and the Savoy). Even the smaller drinking establishments like the Downtowner, Corner Pub and Maloneys, would be packed with patrons and many of them would be re-hashing the Lakers game played that night. Heck I remember downing more than a few with the likes of Jeff Jackson, Roque and Ron Rolston at the Downtowner discussing not only hockey but the finer points of fishing in the wilds of northern Ontario on more than one occasion.

So true. Each bar was filled, or close to it. Bartenders waited until 9:15 or so, because that's when the night really kicked in, and sure enough, the bars became packed with all the people coming from the game. A lot of fun nights post-Laker hockey back then.

Ken Kal, now with the Red Wings, was UM's radio guy back in the 90's, and I ended up throwing one or eight back with him and his color guy one night after a game at the Downtowner. He talked about how much they looked forward to their trips to the Soo. And I was able to have a few beers with Jeff Jackson, as he was known to darken the doorways of the Downtowner after a particularly satisfying win. He was always so down-to-earth, and willing to talk about the game, or whatever else was on your mind.

But the best memory had to be the 1988 National Championship game, and watching at a Downtowner so packed people were standing four deep down the entire length of the bar. When that OT goal was scored that place went absolutely berserk! Hugging, kissing, beer flying everywhere, and the noise was deafening. Talked to friends the next day, and they said (insert local Soo bar here) was the same.

Great memories.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

I was just at that page a few weeks back. That place was OLD. SCHOOL.

So many legends were born there....Gretzky, Coffey,Vanbiesbrouck, Francis, Thornton.....the place reeked of history and truly old school hockey. It's a shame that the Soo Ontario city council had no vision to maintain and keep this arena as Soo Michigan did and continues to do with the Pullar. Yes the Essar Center is a first class arena but you can never replace what was born and thrived in that old Memorial Gardens.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

My understanding is enrollment is up at the university. I believe over 800 students enrolled this year. It is also my understanding that the quality of student has improved (higher retention rates). If the University can maintain this kind of increase I would think that in 2-3 years they will go over 3000 again. That should add a couple of hundred to the attendance. One thing I have notice is that many schools are increasing enrollment via club sports. IE, Adrian a small college has three very good club hockey teams as well as a very good NCAA III team. Those 3 club teams have about 85 players many of who chose Adrian for an education and to continue to play organized hockey, I would think half. What a recruitment tool. Many of the NCAA D1 schools have several club teams also. I do not bring this up to promote club but to increase enrollment at the school and attendance at the games.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

What I was wondering about is what kind of student ticket program, if any, LSSU offers for hockey and how many available seats are set aside for students? If there are empty seats and tickets available on game night, do they reduce ticket prices for students and try to fill the arena?

Students get in free for home games, but must pay for any tourney games. Right now they sit at the end of the rink; my son says there is talk they may move them out where they could be heard more.

Thanks for the answer.

I guess the discussion this thread has been having about filling seats at Abel Arena then puts the burden on the students. But, how many "free" seats in the arena are actually for the students? Of course, "free" seats have to be underwritten somehow. But the students, if interested in hockey, should be supporting their team. I've been to both Lawson Arena (WMU) and Yost Field House (UoM) over the past few years and they have rather large student sections. The "Lunatics" at WMU fill almost an entire side and UoM student section is considerably large at Yost. A lot of it is establishing a unique and sometimes obnoxious bleacher culture (like the WMU and UoM student sections) that students can feel strongly about and participate in. Does LSSU have this? I do agree with past comments that a faithful and committed following often only comes with winning on a regular basis, along with the occasional championship. Plus, nowadays students probably just get updates from some "gametracker" type feed on the web while they do other things. I don't know. If i were a student and the seat was free, I'd be at every home game no matter what--win or lose. I know there's a well established hockey culture in the Soo, both sides, but is there one with the students on campus?

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

A winning team will get fans in the seats, it's as simple as that. Coach Roque has them playing well and the players are totally buying into his system and it is paying off big time, despite some of his detractors. Those that are around the team on a daily basis will tell you this and have told me.

Good luck boys down in Columbus. Get you some Buckeyes

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

I love all the retro talk of Laker Hockey and even Soo, ON. During the 92-94 seasons, I believe, we had a 'spirit club' with our own shirts, and if you attended ao many games you got a free trip to the Joe for the CCHA Playoffs. Back then, it was almost a given that the Lakers would be there. As a student, if you didn't make it to the arena at least a half-hour before game time, you wouldn't get a seat in the student section.

The 1994 championship in St. Paul was a great time, too. We went out there with no tickets, and picked up a couple from some Harvard fans while we were checking into the hotel, and three more from Harvard's head coach. Didn't sit with the Laker fans, unfortunately, but we made a great little section of our own. The party afterward was amazing as well. The last thing I remember was Dan Angelleli says there plane left in a half hour. That was at like 5:30 in the morning. I have no idea how I made it to my hotel room. I just found myself there on the floor the next morning....

I was at the game in St. Paul. I lived in Mankato at the time and my sister the MSU Alum (who lived in Detroit) had got us the tickets before the season even started. She was betting on the Spartans being in. So her, my then girlfriend (now wife), and I all went to the games. The thing was, I just wanted to see the hockey regardless of who was in, but I was not at all surprised that Lake State made it to St Paul. They manhandled Harvard in that semi final as I recall.

EDIT:
Oh, no they pounded BU in the final, beat Harvard in OT in the semi. Wow, that must have been dramatic, wish I could remember it better.

If I remember correctly, Clayton Beddoes scored on a breakaway to beat Harvard in the semi.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

So, can anyone tell me a bit about this BTN.com feed for tomorrow's game? From what I can tell I have to buy at least a monthly subscription. Is that correct? Is it a quality feed? Is there a play-by-play?

You can purchase a single game @ $8 I believe. Feed is not the best, 1 video covering all ice, little if any close up. Play by play has been Bill Crawford ans YESS-FM.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2011-2012

The feed will match the play-by-play

The feed will have play by play, but will be Ohio State announcers. You do have to buy the monthly feed. Make sure to cancel the monthly feed at the end of the weekend if you do not want to be re-billed automatically.

The 8 dollar feed with one camera is for LSSU home games on American One network. I think the OSU feed did have replays from what I remember last year.

Thanks for the info.

Can you get all the Laker home games that way?

...Just went to the website. I guess you can get all the games. Are those America One feeds watchable?
