Lead up to Sochi

Re: Lead up to Sochi

I am a lot worried about these Olympics and the fact that they already have a female suicide bomber lose among the people. They aren't even finished building the city, I doubt they have time to look for this person and whatever group of people she brought with her. Not a good situation.

I'm concerned as well what with some friends headed to Sochi.

I suspect that like with most major events and the focus on security, the pre-hype is likely taken care of by the extra security measures. It is when the powers to be become less vigilant that a terror an event becomes a reality. Boston 2013 is a stark reminder that this can happen close to home as well.

I still vividly remember the trauma at the Munich Olympics. My dad had worked at the site as a construction worker. We lived only about 400 miles away from Munich at the time. The loss of life at that shootout and the local coverage of it still seems eerie after all these years.

Security at the Olympics has never been the same since then, but while there have been some terror incidents over the years since Munich, Atlanta for example, by and large the Olympic events have been relatively incident free since 1972, despite many "threats" to the contrary preceding each event. Not sure, but if memory serves me right, we have never seen any major security/terror incidents at a winter Olympics before.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Not sure if it is accurate or not, but I read recently that even after adjusting for inflation, you could stage 36 of the 1988 Calgary winter Olympics for the cost of this year's event.

Great article. I do think that she is the one player that puts the U.S. team one step ahead of Canada.

Looking at their results without her, I think the US is more than one player ahead of the Canadians. Kessel is clearly one and you can argue whether the other is Stack, a Lam, Schleper or Marvin. On what I've seen recently Schleper is playing out of her mind.

I find it hard to label one player as putting either team ahead of the other. Part of what's so great about the rivalry is that any one player can be the difference on any given day.

In the end, I think we might be hard-pressed to pick one player at the end of the tournament and say she was the difference for Team USA.

I was still somewhat new to hockey in the lead-up to Vancouver, so I didn't pay the kind of attention I do now. Did anyone on Team USA get the kind of hype that Kessel is getting now? It feels like they're building her to mythical status. I studied Comm, so I'm always interested in media coverage - I wonder if she wasn't injured during these lead-up games if the coverage would be the same. It feels like there's a big build-up BECAUSE a lot of these writers haven't seen her play (or not in awhile). Olympic coverage especially is notorious for picking storylines and narratives long before the actual games and just following them regardless of how they actually play out.

None of this is a knock on Kessel - clearly she's worth some level of hype and attention, but man is the "brother/sister" thing played out already and we're still two weeks out.

I think her collegiate career thus far may play a part in the media focus. Gives them some aspects to point out or highlight in any story. Also...the Olympian sibling aspect and one having a somewhat bigger recognition factor per the NHL. A couple guesses.

I share your scepticism about the media's love for a good story (in this case, the brother/sister angle). But what I do know, as a fan of the Canadian team, is that I cringe every time Kessel touches the puck. Lots of other talented players on both teams that could end up being the difference-maker but I sure hope that Canada has someone in close contact with AK whenever she is on the ice. Can't wait for the games to begin.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

All this talk and month of training is all going to come down to 1 day, 1 game. It will be a total team effort that wins the "GOLD". This is a game of read and react and minimizing mistakes. This is a young team in respect to the past teams that have competed, but also very talented. As many times as these teams have played each other nerves will come out in this event. It will be how they harness the nerves. "All" players on this team are parts of a well oiled machine. Will that machine run at its best on the 20th of February. See you there.
