Lead up to Sochi

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Team USA has exactly the players it needs, and the number of players it needs to do the job, this isn't a season of games, it's a tounament

And one of those players hasn't played since October (?).

So it seems at least possible to me that they may end up not having "exactly the players" they need, and so I asked a "dumb, stupid, idiotic" question of 'what then?".

Sorry to have troubled you so.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Great game yesterday at Dexter School in Brookline against St Sebastian's Varsity team. Goals by Schleper, Marvin, Knight, Coyne and Bellamy for the ladies, final score 5-2. McLaughlin played the first half of the game, Vetter the second. The boys got a sloppy goal thirty seconds in but the women dominated the rest of the first period without scoring. They then dominated the second period while scoring 4. The third period was less high intensity but still entertaining, with one goal each.

There were three goals scored on slapshots from Ds at the point and two from scrums in front of the net, none of the pretty single pass and tip ins that we've been used to seeing in the US/Canada series. No particular conclusions to draw from this but it was interesting.

Gigi Marvin seemed to take a puck to the throat near the end of the second and had to be helped off the ice, but she was back for the third period.

Kendall Coyne was the outstanding skater on the women's team, sowing confusion on the backcheck and getting the puck up the ice consistently. On the St Seb's side, their goalie really kept them in the game.

The team hung around afterwards, socialized, and signed autographs for the enthusiastic crowd. Turnout was probably over 300 in a rink with only two sides of spectating.

There's another game against a boy's varsity team at Dexter at 3 pm next Sunday, and one at Belmont Hill School on Thursday 16th. Best hockey you'll see for free all year.

Then explain why you think the team needs 4 lines but no spare defender. If you take one of the forwards to play D, you no longer have 4 lines. So if having 4 lines is important, maybe you should only have 2 goalies so you can have 13 forwards so you can have your precious 4 lines?

I call them like I see them, 4 lines is one of the dumber things I’ve read here, and that’s saying a lot.

BTW, putting a puck in front of Kessel is like putting a mouse in front of a rattlesnake, she'll be playing.

Now go take your Zanax.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Please tell me that Dexter has added an upper school since our Ds went to pre-teen dances there in the '90s? Don't think I'd want to see US Nat'l women versus 8th grade boys....

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Another game for the US National Team against a local club, this time the Northern Cyclones, at Belmont Hill School. Team USA won 3-0, with two second-period goals from Schleper and Decker and an early third-period one from Knight. The Cyclones were bigger and faster than St Sebastian's at the weekend, so it was a good win, though less pretty. Vetter and Schaus dressed, but Vetter played in goal all game. Amanda Kessel was on the ice for warm-ups and the anthem but left after that and spent the game in the press room, the only warm spot in the building as far as we could tell, with Brianne McLaughlin.

Photos, including a bit of video from the second period and from the exhibition shootout after the game (Vetter stopped three of four, Knight and M Lam scored the other end). In the shootout you can hear me saying "Oh ho!" in a very Irish way and also expressing the controversial opinion that M Lam can skate.

Thanks for sharing. I've seen the same shot from Knight in a shootout before; very effective. The first guy who shot on Vetter looked like he thought he was shooting against a little kid. "I'll go really slow so he has a chance and I won't shoot too hard." As for the JLam goal, I don't know if he was trying to bait her into shooting five hole, but if so, he should have a plan for closing it at some point.

I think it was M Lam, but yes, he seemed taken by surprise a bit.

One other interesting thing was that Julie Chu saw a lot of the ice in the third period, mainly substituting for Knight.

Yes, my mistake. Same finger, but it was too lazy to leave the home row. :o

That's good. I sure hope that the plan is to use all 18 skaters heavily in the games that don't figure to be as close on the scoreboard. If it's going to be a short bench in the medal round, there is no reason to shorten it sooner than need be.

WWhyte, thank you for sharing the pics and videos! What is the age group of these teams they are playing against?

Sunday's game was against St Sebastian's Varsity team, so I assume 16-18. For the Junior Cyclones, I wasn't sure, so I had to Google a bit; seems they're a Junior Tier III team, so 16-20. Kevin Valenti for the Cyclones is 20, according to http://www.usahockey.com/news_article/show/326272?referrer_id=752796. Classy tweet from him after the game: wish the @usahockey womens team good luck in the olympics. and to teams in sochi dont shoot glove on @Vetter31 i leaned the hard way today

Re: Lead up to Sochi

From Twitter, seems like the women lost to Dexter varsity today, 5-3. Dexter led 4-2, the women pulled it back to 4-3 late in the third, but Dexter then scored the empty netter at the end of the third to put it away. Schaus was between the pipes.

The good news is that Amanda Kessel was back on the ice, played the whole game, and (AFAICT) scored two of the three goals.
