Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Less than 2 weeks till the puck drops on the 2009-2010 season. So where does everyone see the Lakers finishing? From as high as you think they can finish to as low they can finish.

I say they can finish as high as 6 and as low as 10. Somewhere in the middle but they must get off to a decent start with all their home games early.

Comments???

I can see them finishing as high as 5th or 6th, or as low as 10th or 11th. I think the key will be goaltending. They lost way too many 1 goal games last season that they could have won with better goaltending. Not that either goalie was statistically all that bad (in fact both improved from the prior season), but both goalies had a tendency to give up a soft goal here and there, and that proved costly given how many close games the Lakers were involved in.

Obviously you never know how the new guys will do. We'll have several new forwards this season and will need some production from them to replace the numbers from Schwab and Sim. And losing Kellan Lain and Kyle Jean to injury doesn't help. I get the feeling Lain may not play at all this season although there is some hope he could be ready after the holidays. And Jean will be playing in Juniors again once his shoulder heals enough.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

The coaches and media will be picking their choices and I have a feeling the Lakers will be picked in the bottom three.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Any pre-season polls are going to have the Lakers near the bottom of the CCHA. That will continue to be the case until the Lakers show they deserve better by their on ice performance. I don't expect any surprises in the polls.

Not much love from the blogger from Western College hockey

Sadly, I have to agree with him, especially the point about recruting from Ontario and Saskatchewan.

I agree with him in theory, even though what he says is sort of opposite of what happened last year. Last year we were middle of the pack (6th) in conference scoring, but couldn't keep the puck out of the net (tied for 10th in conference goals against).

After losing 3 of our 4 leading scorers, we'll have to dial back the goals against this year, or things could get ugly.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

When do they have the coaches and media luncheon to give their predictions on the upcoming season?

Not sure, but I would guess next week.

The Laker Hockey show is supposed to be streamed next Monday evening. 6:00 PM I think, on Talk Radio 1400. Paul VanWaggoner has also set up a chat room that allows you to ask questions for Jim Roque ,for the show: http://forum4.aimoo.com/LSSUlakerslivechat/General-Discussion-1-37677. You'll need to create a User ID for the chat room if you want to participate.

From the Laker Hockey Show:

Initial line combos are:

MacVoy-Cassiani-McParland
Acton-Schofield-Power
Cooper (Brad)- Scrymgeour-Hobbins
Barczuk-Aubrey-Nehring

Kaunisto-Gysbers
Haines-Stonehouse
Cowie-Trotman

Roque said he has made a commitment to the upperclassmen to try and play them out of the gate. Hobbins is back to playing forward, at least to start the season.

Kyle Jean should be playing pretty soon in Traverse City. He has just about recovered from shoulder surgery. Kellan Lain has made good progress in the past couple of weeks, but will be playing junior hockey again this season when he is ready to play, possibly by December. Both these guys should be ready to go for the Lakers next season.

Tyler Marble is a couple of seasons away from being able to help the Lakers in net.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

The live feed of the Laker Hockey show seemed to work well, which is encouraging for us out of towners. The podcast is up over on the 1400 site.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Mi Tech picked to finish last again this year. The first two weekends will tell a lot on the Lakers. The exhibition game this Saturday and the Showcase next weekend have to have the Lakers coming out at least 2-1. IF they come out 1-2...0-3..could be another long season.

What type of computer do you have mogerfan because I am still having trouble with it. Mine would cut out from time to time, especially when I would look at the other pages I had opened up. I hope the folks at the station look at that and wish my questions don't seem to make it to the program. I tried to send them but looks like they didn't make the show.

From what I herd of the program it sounded ok.

I do have an HP Touchsmart Media Center, which is sort of designed to run a bunch of feeds at the same time, so that may have helped. Honestly I've never been a huge fan of the winamp application they use, but it seems to work OK for them.

I think I heard them say on the morning show today that there is some type of CCHA press conference or media day type thing this afternoon. Haven't seen that anywhere else. (yes, I live in Chicago and I listen to the 1400 WKNW morning show on the internet every morning. It amuses me I guess.)

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Seems as if most on here were correct on where the Lakers would be placed. Smart money does not seem to be with Lake State again this year.

They won't finish much higher in any preseason polls until they have a season or two where they put more Ws in the win column. So, no surprises in the polls.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

The reason there was no surprise is because the media and coaches don't see a whole lot of talent on the team with the returnees or the new recruits coming in.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

From listening to the Laker Hockey show, JR seems to be pretty high on both McPharland and Power. He seems to think they'll step right in and be big contributors right away because of their talent levels. He also said quite a few times that all the guys came back bigger, stronger and in greater physical shape than the past years.

One thing that concerns me is how JR seemed to have a fairly caviler, kind of so-so, attitude about the PP and didn't seem to have any importance placed on getting something that works figured out. Special teams can make or break a game, and enough of those type of games will make or break a season in this league. Everyone knows how horrible their PP was last year, and to be so nonchalant about it is pretty madening to this Laker fan. But coaches can't even take the ice with the teams until this weekend, so maybe there's still time yet for them to hammer out a PP system before the season begins.

One thing is for sure though, listening to the podcast does kind of get a person even more excited for the season to begin.

More intersting quotes from Roque:
Like every team, we have very high hopes to start the season. The last few years have been rather disappointing for us. We felt that a few years ago when we got to Joe Louis we had turned a corner. I think we’ve underachieved the last couple of seasons, and we’ve had to look hard at what we’ve done here and where we can change and get better.

Interesting statement. It would be easy for him to say "we've lost three of our top four scorerers, so we could struggle to score" or something like that. He seems to have fairly high expectations for the team, which is good to see. We'll have to see how that translates to the ice.

Wish I could be in the Soo tomorrow!
