I will say that I probably agree with Old Pio more often than not, but this time I'm just not seeing it. He completely lost me when he said bronconick was being a bigot towards rich white kids, after bronconick used OJ Simpson as an example.

Silly me. I offer up my opinions here without regard to race, creed, national origin, etc. And you find that amusing? We're having a discussion here, and I'm not going to tailor my opinions out of fear of offending someone. And I don't need to know anything about any of the cheap shot artists to have an opinion about their opinions. I got involved in this loblolly because too many of us evidently felt comfortable about extending our disgust with the suspect in the UVA case to a much larger group, based on certain similarities with that punk. Normally, if I began talking about any other group (except rich white jocks) that way, I would be rightfully condemned. Here, however, I'm being condemned for having the temerity to point out the combined prejudices and bigotry on display. It's never a pretty sight.

This is exactly the same impulse that was on display in the Duke "rape" case. We've even had one poster offer the brilliant yet completely irrelevant opinion that the Dukies weren't "angels," exactly confirming the point I'm making. Even after all we know about that case, he still has a burr under his saddle about those guys. I remember at the time people posting that they "must have done something." Even after the prosecutor was disbarred and sent to prison. These prejudices are deeply held by so many people who would otherwise recoil at judging people collectively. Pity.

I was one of the first people to say the duke kids are being thrown to the slaughter way to early by everyone but guess what...just because they got screwed over doesnt mean they havent done anything wrong in their life or they werent that night even. Unless you think Kobe didn't really rape the girl because he was found innocent :rolleyes:

See though, Kobe is black so I must not hate him as much because he isnt white...although I am in the Klan so I have to hate black people...WHAT TO DO?!?!?!? :D

What you should try to do is judge these matters individually, without regard to the particulars of the individuals involved. "Haven't done anything wrong in their life" is a very high standard, which you evidently think the Dukies should meet before they get fairness from the criminal justice system. Every single word that was alleged about "that night" was a lie. But, somehow those guys deserved what they got, because they had "exotic dancers" at a party? Turns out there were dozens of parties on the Duke campus that year featuring "exotic dancers." And there was no effort made to criminalize those gatherings, presumably because a bottom feeding prosecutor didn't see any votes in doing so.

I find your comments about Kobe confused and confusing. Kobe may or may not have done what he was accused of, but I'm pretty confident he wasn't targeted by a DA willing to break the law to get him convicted. My suggestion as to what you should do is stop acting like a putz and defending prejudice.

For reference, I never said they deserved anything and even told you (hence learning to read) I was saying they were lead to the slaughter too quick. Since you have no idea what you are talking about, who you are talking to, or well what the heck is going on, I think it is time I just say "good day" and walk away. You can go and have conversations with the voices in your head :D

Wait...weren't you the guy who said one of your great childhood memories was meeting Joe McCarthy? Please tell me that was you :D

The truth of the matter is this event at UVA is equal parts tragedy and outrage. It also has zero to do with Duke, given that an actual crime occurred at UVA, while none did at Duke.

I'm pretty sure we've all known guys who were perfectly normal until they got a snoot full. I've always believed if a drunk is beligerant, violent, looking for a fight, etc, then you're seeing the real person. He just hides it until the booze causes those shields to go down. And if you add love/sex into the mix, then it can become extraordinarily volatile, what appears to be the case here.

But this kind of crime happens every day; more probably every hour, and involves people from all backgrounds, races, religions, etc. In fact, these deals frequently become murder/suicide (happened a couple of days ago in an Old Navy store in the Chicago loop) and sometimes children are slaughtered. Frequently (usually?) the person who does the killing has had encounters with the police--sometimes numerous encounters--yet the police "didn't do anything, to prevent the tragedy."

I'm truly not sure what generalized conclusions we can draw from the data. Nor what strategies we can employ to reduce significantly the number of occurances.

Yes, I did meet Joe McCarthy when I was 6 or 7. Please tell me you aren't holding THAT against me.
