Fort Wayne held a regional. It was a spectacular failure.

And since you haven't been to Wings in 25 years, I can understand how you wouldn't recognize the facility or the area around it. A lot has changed. Not saying it's palatial or anything, but it's more than adequate for what's required. They've done a good job upgrading and making it a modern arena.
 
I have looked into my crystal ball and have seen the 2027 regional sites. They are Fargo (UND) for the NE, Sioux Falls (Augustana) for the E, and Omaha (Omaha) for the W. Heads are asploding everywhere!!

And I know we talk about the same things every year but I paid $118 for the three games in Worcester. I didn't have a dog in the fight and to me, I will pay. But I go by myself. It's my time away from my family lol. My kids are young. But there's no chance I would spend $400+ to bring a family of 4. So while diehards like me will always go, you're never gonna attract local families etc to fill the arena at those prices. Nobody seems to care though. In the end the players don't get an atmosphere they deserve.

It felt like scoring was way down this season. With the score at 2-0 Minnesota, there have been 51 goals scored in these regionals. If that score holds, we will be averaging 4.64 goals/game with one game to go.

Lets be real, every FF is heavyweight. Doesn't need my team there to be great. I would be ecstatic if we are going, but FF's have been far more epic than lame in the 3 decades I've been watching college hockey.

I'd like to have a team to root for against Denver, so let's go Bobcats!

Also, after the crap Michigan pulled this season, I think everyone (outside of Ann Arbor anyway) is rooting against the Wolverines this season. I'm just unable to root for Denver.

My rooting interest order at this stage:
1. Minnesota State
2. Quinnipiac
3. Minnesota
4. Michigan
5. Denver

Tough for the teams chosen for the fourth regional that aren't even given a place to play ;)

So, after a flurry of goals in the last 20 in Allentown, we finish the 2022 Regionals with 63 goals (5.25 goals/game)...tied for the 6th fewest in the last 20 years.
 
Attendance for the regional finals was mixed, but more good than bad. Loveland, Allentown and Albany all saw attendance increases of over 1,000 fans each over the semifinals, but Worcester's attendance cratered, down over 3,000, which almost wiped out the increases for the other three sites. Overall, Worcester had the fourth worst final attendance. Allentown had the 10th worst, Albany the 13th worst and Loveland the 24th worst. The combined finals attendance of 14,040 was the worst since the current format started in 2003, but was one of just five to have an increase over the semifinals (admittedly a low bar to clear). On the positive side, Loveland has the 2nd largest increase between semifinals and final, Albany the third largest and Allentown the fourth largest. The day between games seems to have boosted attendance at Albany and Allentown as neither had a local team in the final; the day between games giving some fans the time to reach them after their teams won. However, it remains to be seen for sure why those sites attendance increased. The the negative side, Worcester's attendance drop was the worst all-time* and shows that the having the local team(s) lose the semifinals hurts attendance^.

Overall this year had the smallest total regional attendance, just 27,680, almost 10,000 less than the next lowest (2013). Individually, Allentown likely had the second worst attendance*, Albany likely the fourth worst*, Loveland the 12th or 13th worst* and Worcester the and Worcester the 22nd or 23rd worst. Of the 29 regionals with the lowest total attendance only Loveland this year had a host team. On the other end of the spectrum 11 of the 12 regionals with the highest attendance had a host team, nine which played both days. However, 4 of the top 6 were also played at the host team's arena.

*the attendance the for the St. Louis (2011) regional final is not known as it was not recorded on the game summary (if anyone has that information please let me know what it was).
^I'm still working on the driving time of each team at each regional as some regionals, Worcester (Holy Cross) and Providence (Brown) in particular, are hosted by schools that currently have little chance of making the NCAAs.
 
Attended the final in Albany and Worcester. On a scale of 1 to 10, Albany was a 9 and Worcester a 6. We were impressed by the Maverick fans; passionate, knowledgeable and fun-loving. The ND fans, more reserved, were there in numbers. Worcester was noticeably quieter. The Bronco fans were as nervous and tight as the team. The Gophers poised and opportunistic. The disallowed goal and early third period penalty really hurt Western. The weekend trip, including hotel, gas from the Boston area, tickets and a couple of $13 beverages at the games cost about $500. Well worth it, in my view, considering the quality of hockey and the incredible effort the players put in.

I've slowly been working on compiling detailed scoring data and I have the complete game results from 2008-09 through yesterday's games. For 2021-22 overall scoring was 5.64 GPG, just a tick above the 14 season average of 5.63 GPG and 6th highest over the past 14 seasons. For the NCAA Tournament I currently only compile all games, but I have pulled out the Frozen Four games from the totals and I noticed a few errors in Fighting Sioux 23's numbers for 2009, 2010, and 2021. For this season, as FS23 stated, scoring has dropped to 5.25 GPG, 0.39 GPG less than the season average. Looking at the scoring data over the past 14 seasons shows that 7 times the scoring in the NCAA regionals decreased compared to the season overall and 6 times it increased, with the average change being -0.07 GPG. For the NCAA including the Frozen Four the GPG difference is +0.18 GPG, so it will be interesting to see if scoring increases in the FF games this year.

What I find more interesting is that through the regionals this year's NCAA Tournament has the had the closest games the past 14 years, with a total differential of just 19 goals, an average differential of 1.58 per game. That is below the overall average this season of 2.32 GDpG, the 14 year NCAA Tournament average of 2.34 GDpG and the 14 year NCAA Regional average of 2.32 GDpG. That means that so far this year has been the most competitive NCAA Tournament the past 14 years, with only 2018 (1.80 GDpG) also having a sub-2.00 GDpG. The regionals were the most competitive over that time and the only one with a sub-2.oo GDpG.

This comes after last year had the second largest total goal differential in regionals with 33 and the largest per game differential at 3.30. Last year's tournament also had the third largest total goal differential with 40 and the largest per game differential at 3.08. So after last year's lopsided games this year's close games are even more noticeable.
