Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Nellie Gray, longtime supporter of the cause of life, died last week. Kudos to her for a life well lived.

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Rosie O'Donnell has suffered a heart attack.

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Man, that's a very long list.
Paraphrasing a Mark McGrath interview from back in my college days, former lead singer of the band Sugar Ray, People don't realize how hard it is to become even "just" a one-hit wonder. Very few bands ever have enough success to make it that far. Most never leave the local scene. If we end up being one-hit wonders, I'm thrilled to have that chance. And then he goes on to say he wants more big songs, but wasn't going to consider himself or his band failures for what they'd achieved.

You wind up like Eric Darling (former Weaver and lead singer of the Rooftop singers--remember? Walk right in, sit right down, etc.). Anyway, he once introduced their one hit by saying: "Here's one of your favorites. We hope it's one of ours." McGrath is right. Pop music has to be the most competitive business of all. That's why people like the Stones and Beachboys have been so amazing to have stayed in the game for so long.

I once interviewed Teresa Brewer (who had more than one hit) and she said if you're not on the pop charts people assume you're dead. She was essentially making McGrath's point, too. She was making a good living playing clubs and state fairs, etc. BTW, this was in the mid 70's and she looked terrific. Like she'd been poured into her jeans. But I digress.

OP-Most one hit wonders that i can recall usually had other songs that although they did not reach the top or top ten-at least were heard occassionally. The real trivia questions involve the one hit wonders that had that one song get to the top and then they just disappeared almost completely.

Very dainty and petite. And happy to chat. I asked her if it was true she couldn't read music, and she confirmed it. On the other hand, two bars and you knew instantly who was singing. Sort of like Little Richard.

Yeah, some of 'em got a bounce for subsequent releases and got a little air play. But still, only one hit. But you're right. The ones who came from absolutely nowhere, had a hit, and then went right back to nowhere are the real one hit wonders.

One of my favorite films is "American Hot Wax," which showed record producers making suggestions that would turn unknown artists into knowns. The best line came at the end where Alan Freed tells the people shutting down his show: "You can stop me. But you can't stop Rock n Roll. Don't you know that?"

Truly a good flick-with Jay Leno and Fran Dreschler playing important roles. Lots of that movie were based upoon true stories-some of which was altered to be a little more politically correct however. But the gist of the movie really did nail the era well. My earliest music exposure was listening to Alan Freed on my little AM radio on the bedstand.

Mark McGrath is a friggin' genius when it comes to music trivia/knowledge. No joke. IIRC, it was VH1 that had Rock N Roll Jeopardy, and he crushed everyone. It was insane. His cred instantly rose for me after watching that show.

She's still alive. No recent events; very odd.....

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Rosie O'Donnell has suffered a heart attack.

I hope she recovers. Although I am reminded of Bobcat Goldthwaite's concert wherein he talks about how beautiful Johnny Depp is. And how, if there were two lines, one to make love to Johnny, the other to make love to Rosie, everyone would be standing in the Depp line. He says: "Sorry, Rosie."

As much as I dislike her, recovery is an obvious hope. ;)

She was funny in two things I've seen: Beautiful Girls, and A League Of Their Own. The former her better performance, IMO.
