He went to the hospital (drove himself) because of severe chest pain. (as per news story I saw somewhere)

That sounds aortic-and in that case-all depends on location from the arch all the way down into the abdomen. He was obviously in need of a well trained and experienced chest cutter. Where is Trapper John when you need him?

With the Pros from Dover??

I did not see him on the course this AM. But I was on the 9 holer - he may have been on the main (Maine?) course.

Even if you did have an autopsy in America, the pathologist would likely list the incorrect cause of death simply because they perform them so infrequently. And lots (and lots) of things in medicine are a complete waste of time and money.

Anyway. Once, while on a critical care rotation, I trained with an attending from Croatia who told me that when he was a student, rounds included analyzing patient's feces. He said that the nurses would collect samples from all the patients and place them in a room and then after seeing the patients, the attendings would then eyeball the poop and determine the diagnosis of the patient. He said they were often more right than wrong. True story. He was one bad azz dude (no pun intended).

In modern American medicine-physical diagnosis is virtually a lost art. I can understand using the most modern tests-when idicated-but nothing replaces a doctor being a good listener and asking the right questions to take a detailed medical history followed by performing a detailed physical examination. It has become a lost art. Many of the newer guys just rush to the MRI and CT Scan and a zillion blood tests before they even ask you a question. I am very familiar with all the new aspects of practicing medicine-I am still licensed and keep my CME absolutely up to date-but i am an old timer. I have never used a cookbook to practice-every single patient is a new puzzle and has to be evaluated individually-in spite of what the government and the insurance companies want. If it means looking at poop, or getting a quick whiff of urine-then so be it. Many diagnosis present and are made with such a simple act.

I think smaller colleges do, but I never saw one at SCSU. Milwaukee School of Engineering had some sort of formal dance/ball during the Frozen Four in 2006, we saw the nice smelling people walking on campus in their rented tuxes and prom-like dresses while we stinky hockey people were leaving the posters' game.

Absolutely they would. My oldest son (now in his late 20s) is a big big band fan. We've seen Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Glenn Miller Orchestra live. I was surprised at the number of young GMO members.

All over the news here in NY this morning. Mayor Koch died at 2 AM from congestive heat failure. His funeral will be on Monday.

Not too difficult to predict-they had said they removed 15 pounds of fluid from his lungs when he went into ICU. That is a little less than 2 gallons. Pretty much only see that with congestive heart failure. Did not always agree with his politics-but he certainly was a colorful character in NYC.

when my sister died, my mother declined an autopsy, and some of us (those with children) were a bit annoyed at her, because it would have been nice to know that it was not from a hereditary condition.
