Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

I've never understood why the league (and college hockey in general) doesn't go to a 10-minute OT. Is more 5 minutes really going to gas the team that much more if they have another game the next night?

I think the biggest concern (that I've heard) is that the ice gets so chopped up that the chance of injury goes up. 10 min of overtime is 50% more play than the ice normally sees in a period. Nobody wants to take the break for resurfacing for regular season games.

I'll point out that I'm not against breaking ties... I just don't like deforming the game just to achieve a result.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Since this has spiraled to an OT debate...

I do think something should be changed about how HE handles OT. Now the point is so valuable that teams simply sit back and drain the 5 minutes.

I wouldn't be against
3 points for regulation W
2 points for OT W
1 point for OT L
0 points for regulation L

Ugh!

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

If you're that against ties, then why not just keep the games going, just like the playoffs. Keep playing 20-minute periods until someone scores.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

4X4 would be great. More excitement and better opportunity to score. Doesn't fool around with the W-L-T point structure.

Too complicated. Just go to 4 vs 4 OT so we can stop with so many **** ties. If after 5 minutes of 4 vs 4 it's still tied, well, it's a tie. The point structure is fine.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Good God, why mess up something that works and makes Hockey East's format the best in D-I??

Keep the top 8 only. It works, its clean, its simple, and it creates a "race" for the last spot in the last few weeks of the regular season. This isn't Little League anymore, not everyone needs to be included in the playoffs.

That first round needs to be single elimination.

$$$$$ All you need to know...

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

its one less time they have to fly East each year, which we already know is a big deal for them.

Don't join the league then...just like Louisiana Tech being in the WAC ("WESTERN" Athletic Conference). What a joke...

Maybe they can play in the Indiana Intramural League...

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

If they ever go to 4 on 4 OT, I agree with claver about rewarding three points for a regulation win and two for an OT win.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

If the goal is to not have ties... 2 points for a win 0 for anything else. It wont take long and there wont be ties.

Agree. Maybe I'm overly traditionalist but one of the distinctive features of hockey (at least until the pro leagues started messing with it) has been the recognition that in any given game, one team simply may not better than the other. And that's the precise reason that hockey has always gone with point-based standings. With two points for a win, one for a tie, and 0 for a loss, the standings accurately reflect team performances over the course of a season.

I can see going to one 10-minute OT but if one team isn't better than the other after all that, then let the standings reflect it. I just don't like injecting artificialities like 4-on-4, shootouts, etc.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Like it or not Hockey East is going to a 12 team playoff. As a Merrimack fan, I like this because my team does have a chance. As a hockey fan I dislike the lack of importance placed of the regular season. I would have kept it to eight teams and making the playoffs would have been an accomplishment to school like mine. With the 12 team playoff I want to see all 12 teams play on the first weekend 1v12 2v11 etc. Top two remaining teams get Friday night byes with semis on Saturday and finals Sunday night.

As for OT I say keep it as is. Getting a winner is not necessary and shootouts cheapen 65 tough played minutes. Also keep it 5 on 5.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

I think the CCHA tried that format once and quickly abandoned it. Do you want games at the Garden Friday, Saturday and Sunday? Finals Sunday night wouldn't be a good idea IMO.
