Hockey East - The Off Season

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

I don't think the B10 returning travel dates is going to be a huge issue. They have to realize they aren't going to come in and be the powerhouse conference in Hockey like in other sports. If they want to play the best teams they are going to have to make concessions. I don't see BC BU or even UVM scheduling games with them without a return date. If they want to play Clarkson, UAH, AIC then sure, but that isn't going to give them the prestige they are looking for.

Regardless, HE will be fine.

Personally, I think the B10 discussion has been beat to death at this point anyways. And for what it's worth, I don't see ND joining HE.

There has to be something more entertaining to discuss. Here are some options :

a.) Maine is leading the off season thread count leaving RPI in the dust.
b.) The best goaltender in Boston is still a Catamount
c.) The UNH thread needs to get over the fact that they aren't playing BC to end the season
d.) Northeastern fans setting themselves up for a downfall with all the expectations in that thread
5.) Is Big Pappa a joke poster or does he just overdose on anti-depressants daily
6.) The Yale thread is dead....
g.) Oh whatever I give, keeping beating the B10 horse

I did mention two teams. That's not entirely fair to Michigan (Ann Arbor), because they have recently traveled for a game with UNH and BU. However, getting the goofers to travel, well...

Also, both Maine and RPI have 2 off-season threads thus far, and RPI has more posts. Typically we don't do a recruit thread in the offseason. ;)

Is Big Pappa this year's Bear Red?

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

I disagree that Northeastern fan's expectations are that high, I think most of us are thinking we'll end up at 4th or 5th, which doesn't seem much different from what other Hockey East fans are saying.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

When has anyone said anything about UNH not playing BC at the end of the season?

There were complaints about not having a home/home with a Boston school, not playing a Boston school in February (or the first weekend in March), and complaints that the last home game is in the 3rd-to-last week. WildShawn is correct; these are not mutually inclusive, but there is not enough information to tell if they are mutually exclusive. No inferences may be drawn.

I just think the UNH schedule sucks. Not necessarily for the team but for fans. There is something about home and home weekends, particularly if the away game is on the tube...

Also it doesn’t seem that long ago the Goofers were at UNH for 2 to start the year. That was in return for UNH playing 2 out there. For the B10 teams UNH seems to do OK getting them to come east (UMich, Minn, Wisco) recently.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

With NU being a pretty consistent 4-5 pre-season pick by the posters of this thread anyone want to speculate on the impact of Cronin bailing on them affects the season? Help, Hurt, no difference?
Does Saponari choose HE school #4?
Does Parker layoff the extra security guards he hired for games versus NU?
Does HokyDad get a shot behind the bench?

Certainly turns NU into a bit of a wild card, at least until everything shakes out. So much for Cronin's statement the end of April adamantly denying he was going anywhere.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

It means Witt could get more playing time which = good. As far as everything else, I don't know. But LaPlante can hold his own. He went .500% in that 6 game stretch against BC, BU and UNH following the Beanpot.

Who had them 4-5? I'd put them 6 at best, more likely 7-8. They lost an awful lot. As for the effect this has, I think because of how late it is, it has to be negative. Fewer quality coaching candidates now than there were earlier on (although Rolston or Dennehy would certainly be a great hire). Possibility of recruits jumping ship. Maybe Oleksiak puts more consideration into bolting after the draft. A lot to be determined, but I don't see how this could be a positive for NU. I will say that I don't see Saponari changing his mind. He loves Boston and wanted badly to finish out his college career here. City was a bigger factor than the coach.

The NCAA may go easier on them over any further violations that turn up? They don't have to worry about his roid rage any longer? There are lots of positives, you just have to be imaginative

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

Actually you put them at 4th

IIRC, I posted that like 2 days after the season ended. I hadn't done any research on anything and there weren't any earlier departures yet. I would have them much lower now, and have had them much lower for a while.

Can you provide a post that backs up your assertion? Regardless, like I said most posters had then 4-5th.... except for FL who had a change of heart after analyzing their incoming class and early departures. But that's an interesting topic in itself, who for early departures led you to drop them from 4th to 7-8th, especially with Gaudrau and Saponari that were announced after those early departures left?

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

that means that Merrimack is looking for a new head coach.
I would hate for that to happen. Last year was pretty special, but I think he might have something happening in No. Andover. School was extremely engaged, lots of sellouts (yes, I know, small capacity at Lawler, but still...) School and team got some great exposure. I for one certainly hope he stays.

I had dropped them even before Reid left. Like I said, at the time of that post, I had done literally no research. I think I reserve the right to change my rankings, however drastically, after doing my homework. NU returns just 49 goals and 138 points, both good for 9th among HE teams. That's the biggest red flag for me. We can safely assume that Saponari will score at a pretty decent clip, but after that, where are the goals going to come from? Maybe Gaudreau has a big freshman season. Maybe McLaughlin/Vermeersch/Quailer step up their games. But those are all maybes. Defense should be pretty good, but the offense really worries me.

That was da Costa not Dennehy. If da Costa were returning you would still have sell outs and such. I personally do not think MC is any trouble of losing their coach either way.
