Hockey East - The Off Season

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

Screw ND, they made their own bed by not joining a football conference.

Say we add ND (and some random school for even number purposes) and 5 years later they join the B10/11/12 which makes more $ from tv than ND does with their NBC contract so we're back to 11. We have a good thing now no sense in altering it.

Can HE be improved? Of course. I think BUtanga should go to CBS-College Sports for more broadcasts. Their production was a million times better than NESN (primarily HD but also announcers, stories on teams, etc). I'd also go to NESN and try to have them put more Saturday games on as well when the Bs aren't playing.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

The main advantage to expansion was that it could open up more NC games. So if it was ND and say UCONN each HE team could play the other one 2 times and there would be only 22 Conference games instead of 27. Those 5 extra NC games could be used to schedule games against western opponents or even for scheduling home games against Atlantic Hockey teams.

The main advantage bringing in ND would have been was it would have helped to expand the league without adding another bottom feeder. A brand new arena and a school that is willing to spend on its team is what HE would ideally want in a new member. Another idea that would be nice but probably unlikely would be for URI and UCONN to step it up and go all in for mens hockey. That way HE would have each NE states flagship school in the conference. I doubt that will happen in the near future unless they both have some alumni donate a ton of money.

We could open the schedule for non-conf opponents right now.... 2 divisions... 4x3+5x2=22 games. The league doesn't because it doesn't want non-conf opponents... for most of the league, including the strong sisters, they tend to mean weaker attendance figures. Also, for those dates you do want to schedule, you have a stronger position as you have fewer dates if somebody wants to play you... you can presumably get better options.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

It would be great for BC to play Notre Dame annually but it would be fine as a non conference game. I have reservations about expanding when compression is happening elsewhere for autobids would be going to leagues with only 6 teams and getting only one for 12 puts you at a disadvantage. Maybe Hockey East should split into two 6 team leagues by adding a state and private school and then play an interlocking schedule and getting two autobids. BC, BU, PC, NU, Merrimack, (RPI, Quinnipiac or Holy Cross?) and Maine, UNH, UVM,UML, UMA, (UConn or URI?).

but BC already plays ND just about every year anyway and i believe there is an agreement to continue to do so............i am against anything that has BC play BU, UNH or Maine any less than three times a year. The rivalries with UNH and Maine took decades to build and i am not in favor of watering them down........

I don't think this is an option because it would eliminate the autobid as these conferences would have less than six teams.

I actually don't mind the NESN coverage much at all, the hour pregame is pretty good actually. I feel that HE would be wise to look at the NHL and NBA schedules and find strategic weekdays to play "Games of the Week", or maybe just throw a regular Tuesday night Hockey East night, on account of a lot of the 18-35 demo being out doing stuff (or at their team's games) on weekends They really need to get involved in the local sports media more.. WEEI is in bed with BC already, but I'm sure plenty of work could be done with 98.5 which has proven to be a godsend for local hockey fans. And hopefully HE's social media strategy continues to improve as well.

WEEI didn't even acknowledge hockey existed until the Bruins made their cup run.

98.5 has been quite good with HE so far. They broadcasted the HE finals last year and this year I believe. On Wednesdays during the hockey season DA had a few HE coaches and the commissioner on.

Besides DA though I haven't heard much of a mention of college hockey sides the occasional mention of the Beanpot and when a school has something worthy of making headlines that they read coming back from commercials. Unless lots of fans start calling in or something to talk about college hockey they are not going to promote it anymore.

One idea to try and get 98.5 more into it would be to get them to broadcast certain games if the Bruins are not playing at that time. If they where broadcasting more of the games you would probably get the program managers pushing the hosts to talk a little more HE action.

You mean just the NHL for the coming season. This NBA lockout is not ending anytime soon. Everything I have read said a 50 game schedule would be a best case scenario so if anything this is the chance for HE to jump in. Agreed about WEEI in with BC everything but they don't really talk hockey anyway. 98.5 I am sure would be open to the idea of putting a game on or maybe just a weekly segment instead whatever else they put on from 7-10 on a Tuesday night in November to March. and isn't 98.5 a CBS station? so maybe something could be worked out to have the radio talk up some games besides the Beanpot and if it is a big hit then CBS college start to up their coverage. Idk how practical this is obviously or how willing 98.5 would be

WEEI actually screens callers who want to talk about college hockey. They have even had running gags where they hang up immediately on any caller who mentions the Beanpot.

maybe that's why they are getting their arses kicked by 98.5 in the latest Arbitron ratings:D

Felger is from Wisconsin originally and a BU grad (And I'm pretty sure I've heard him rip into BC in the past), maybe he'd have a few minutes to spare for HE!

One of the staffers on the DA show is a BC grad. I think a few others of the staffers who work at the Hub are NU grads.

If Syracuse ever started a Mens team and joined HE than we would hear a ton about them on the DA show whenever they played a game in Boston

Anyway if we want to hear more HE on the sports radio there needs to be a better marketing effort of it from the conference and the individual schools. Besides those national championship sings BU and BC had on the Mass Pike and the billboard BU has outside Agganis arena it seems difficult to see advertising for these programs. Maybe HE or the schools should consider paying some of the shows to have their coaches on shows promoting upcoming games. Maybe they should get a few more billboards around town.

I'll avoid this radio debate for the most part because I'm extremely biased, but this reminded me of how amazed I am that neither sports radio station has at least Parker or York on more often. I would think even the casual Boston sports fan would be at least somewhat interested in that interview. Obviously they all know who Parker and York are. And then maybe if those interviews go well, you start bringing on some of the other coaches who are having good seasons.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

nobody in this town gives a chit about college hockey unless you CARE. there are no 'casual' college hockey fans.

yeah, i know that and you're "pretty sure";) you've heard him rip BC? that's his favorite pastime and it's to the point that he loses credibility his opinions are that severe and over the top

so true and it's been that way for a long time

yep, other than the Beanpot it pretty much is under the radar sadly

i'd like to hear your take on it FL, bias or not:)........GDF:mad: has been on WEEI numerous times:rolleyes: but i cant say that i have ever heard either Jerry or Jack on. There was a show on a smaller radio station, AM i believe up around 11 or 12 on the dial that on wednesday at maybe 5 there was an hour long college hockey program. i have tried to find it the past year or two but apparently it's gone. they even covered D2
