Hockey East - The Off Season

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

Yeah, no way Dennehy leaves Merrimack for Northeastern...he's biding his time until York retires.

He can't wait for York to retire from Northeastern? He could do the same thing there and probably make more money doing it. I'm not saying it will happen or not but you can't rule it out all together. You could say York's right hand man Cav is a strong candidate for the position as well so I doubt Dennehy is basing his decisions on York's future

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

That was da Costa not Dennehy. If da Costa were returning you would still have sell outs and such. I personally do not think MC is any trouble of losing their coach either way.

I forgot MC has an NHL draft pick in net that was possibly the MVP of the team until he faltered down the stretch. I forgot they had a third line of unsong heroes -two of whom scored ten goals. I forgot that they had two seniors who were prolific scorers. I forgot Dennehy had to recruit some of that talent to North Andover. I guess I'll just go back to realizing it was all Da Costa...

PS Merrimack is 5-2-2 against UVM since 2008-2009 season or 4-0-2 since 09-10. Dope.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

Last year was pretty special, but I think he might have something happening in No. Andover. School was extremely engaged, lots of sellouts (yes, I know, small capacity at Lawler, but still...) School and team got some great exposure.

I'm just curious as to how "unsung heros" lead to sell outs? If they are "unsung" doesn't that mean they aren't getting exposure, flying under the radar, going unnoticed? Fans didn't sell out the arena to see Cannata make a few saves. They bought tickets to see da Costa.

Was da Costa the only player on the team, of course not, but that wasn't the questsion. Try to focus on the topic ADD boy. Dope....I love it. MC beat UVM the past 2 seasons and that makes me a dope? BAAHAHHAHAH

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

I think fans came because MC was winning, noot particulary too root a particular player (though certainly some did). Merrimack had a terrific home record, you win a lot at home and more people will come.

It will be easy enough to determine. Either they will continue to sell out, or they will see a marked decrease in ticket sales without da Costa.

Does Merrimack plan on having a "hardware night" or something at the beginning of the season to honor last year's accomplishments.

Maybe a Ribbon Raising Ceremony to raise your NCAA Tournament participants ribbon?

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

I dont think so.......I know he's a BC guy and all but i think York's replacement is on the bench with him now

I still don't see Dennehy leaving MC. He has just gotten the program heading in the right direction. I don't see NU replacing Cronin with any "current" head coaches.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

What about AHL coaches? There any HC in the AHL who have coached/played in college and might be tempted to get a coaching gig in college.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

For what it's worth, here we go.

1) UNH - Umiliation continues as Wildcats dominate the regular season....then dust off the golf clubs. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
2) BC - Best coach in Hockey East finds a way to rebuild...around Milner. As usual, York fumbles around with the lines until the break to not show his hand..then runs over everyone.
3) BU - Terriers take final 2 games of the season against NU when Puckstar is ejected for jumping on the BU bench and pulling the sweater over Parker's head.
4) Merrimack - I know, I know. DeCosta's gone to Ottawa. But JC isn't taking the tire-pumper's place just yet. MD keeps the lunch pail group at home for the playoffs.
5) UVM - Coach S gets the train back on the rails after dismissing all of his top players BEFORE the season starts. Just misses home ice in the playoffs
6) Providence - The Leaman Effect is felt in Providence. Even without the talent, Team Friar joins the "union" just by having a new voice to listen to.
7) Northeastern - The crew that needs to be ridden has lost it's cowboy. Huskies don't fear for their life anymore...so they don't play like it.
8) Maine - I hope Black Bear fans enjoyed the best seaon of the decade last year. (Whitehead - talent) = struggling for playoff spot...again.
9) UMass - Anyone else notice the complete lack of buzz around this team? Toot just riding them into oblivion...and no playoffs this time.
10) UML - It's a long way from the basement. Bazin seen wandering UML campus talking to himself before Thanksgiving.

It's understandable that people outside the MC community would think that the turnaround at MC was 100% due to the gravitas of DaCosta and the bandwagon effect and so forth.

But in fact the entire school has basically turned an about-face under the interim and current president as well as the new AD. Santagati and Serino have some notable defenders on this board, but I can speak from personal experience and that of people who've graduated in the past year to say that there's a lot of remarkable changes going on up there and the students and especially alumni are really on board to support it.

To bring it back to the topic of hockey, I think you'll see higher season tix sales this year (boxes are still sold out) and Dennehy will be sticking around for the duration of his contract. I also believe he is on record saying he likes commuting 5 minutes from Andover or wherever. I would be upset but not shocked if he jumped ship in a few years though.

About 4th place sounds right.

Over-under on the number of times this season Nate Leaman says "No Comment" while whining in the press conference after a Providence loss: 24 :D

This will probably be pretty accurate. I'd still put Northeastern ahead of Vermont and Providence, and maybe slide Maine up a slot or two.

Another prediction: UNH and BC will be the only teams to make NCAAs barring a lower team winning the Hockey East tournament. But I suspect that by Hockey East tournament time, BC will have shaken off an iffy start and will burn the house down again at TD Garden.

BU will finish 3rd with another season of misleading results, barely clinging to ties and one goal home wins, before being exposed by someone in the Hockey East tournament and pushed off the bubble.

It feels like every year for the last 3 or 4 years, people have been predicting that UMass will miss the Hockey East tournament, and every year they get in. IIRC, the team last year was tied with UML for most freshman in the nation and it showed at times. I think offensively, the team will improve with a years worth of experience under their belt. Goaltending will definitely take a step back with Paul Dainton graduating. I'm hoping the improvement from the sophomores will be able to overcome the inexperience at goaltending and UMass will finish either 7-8.

Fixed your post.

It's nice to see expectations are high in Amherst, though.
