Hockey East - The Off Season

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

no, every school.
BC/BU etc was the driving force behind the "area" restictions etc.

ND stay out there with the rest of the mid western teams. Hockey East is Hockey East

Play them in tournament or once every few years but not mandated yearly

Really?

It seems like the only schools that would be effected by extra travel significantly would be UML and Merimack.

Umass-In A10 travel for every sport somewhat and they will do some Midwestern travel for when the football team starts playing fbs.
NU-CAA does a large amount of travel in every other sport to VA.
BC-ACC nearest conference member is in Virginia so they travel a ton.
Maine, BU, UVM, UNH-The hockey team does a trip out west it seems once a year to twice a year.
Providence-Big East they will do travel all over the place in every other sport.

Seems like UML and Merrimack are the only schools that would have a significant increase in their travel expenses for their respective athletic departments.

Problem is those are the two teams with arguably the least ability to spend that additional money. Although, the article in the Maine newspaper makes it sound like we're getting some increased interest in tv rights, and if Notre Dame+12th team joined, we could possibly stand to make a nice little increase in tv revenue.

One thing that interested me in the Main artile was the mention of Versus possibly interested in games. I have no idea how interested they are or how much money they'd be interested in putting toward it, but it could add a significant amount of tv money into college hockey, and where Hockey East could stand to benefit greatly.

I think it'd be neat if Providence could work out some sort of basketball/hockey weekend with Notre Dame if ND joined hockey east...

Not just TV revenue.

There is also the potential for better sponsorship deals for the league and better attendance for almost all the teams.

Notre Dame is a big time program and a visit by them could/should cause an increase in attendance for HE Tourney and regular season games due to fact that they: have a large alumni base in the northeast, for whatever reason still have a lot of people who are fans of the school even though they have no affiliation with them, and general interest from casual fans who maybe wouldn't go to say a normal UML or UMass home game but could be drawn in by that Notre Dame brand name.

What are we talking about a trip to South Bend every other year? I think both schools can handle that.

I think you can add UML and Merrimack to this list.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

You sound like you are posting from a Merrimack/UM-Lowell point-of-view................

I have no interest in Notre Dame... i don't see what they do for the league nor do I see what it does for the general profile. It would also muck up scheduling pretty good. I don't see why we should do things for Notre Dame without something in return.

As for costs... I think UML can take it... but that being said, Notre Dame is a needless over-reach.

For the record sandy, our program is in a VERY stable position... we just need a coach with an ability to ride it to better days.

With all due respect to the rest of Hockey East, it only really matters what BC and BU think..........and I think that they would both welcome Notre Dame into the league with open arms.

Re: Hockey East - The Off Season

Then we can change the league name to "Hockey Eastern"

And why would those schools want ND? They dont need them to help win titles as they do that now so what would the benefit be?

ND would probably require inclusion in the Beanpot before joining.

What????

Hockey East does not run the Beanpot. The Beanpot is run by the four schools in it and the people over at the TD Garden and they are not planing on changing it anytime soon.

The same Lowell program that was 5th in HE and 16th in the Country in home attendance last year after having their worst season since the late 60's? Not mention having one of the best arenas in HE and an administration committed to D1 hockey?

I think Lowell could manage to come up with the cash for a trip or two to the Midwest.

Hockey East is the only place for Notre Dame to go. And with the contract with Versus it would be nice. ND would prefer going to Boston over Soo, Marquette and Big Rapids.

If H.E. did Miami & N.D. it would make sense for scheduling but be a beast of a schedule. At 12 teams you do the ECAC travel partner system: Miami-N.D., UNH-Maine, Vermont-Umass, Providence-NU, Merrimack-Lowell, B.U.-B.C. Everybody plays everybody else home and away for 22 league games (meets the min) the rest are open for non-conference games. That leaves a ton of open schedule time to play WCHA and Big 10 teams. The problem is some long travel partner games and potentially many Friday-Sunday / Thursday-Saturday weekends. It does however limit much of the travel issue of the current teams heading to the midwest for games, it does burden Miami & N.D. with lots of travel. The last issue is the strength of schedule by adding two teams that have been fairly regular NCAA participants. The new H.E. with 12 teams (and 5 used to appearing in the NCAAs) get one autobid the same as the 6 Big10 teams.
