Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Well I think it's clear to everyone that BU is certainly a team that knows little about winning and losing as a result of lucky bounces.

I can't speak for the team but I'd agree that their fans "knows little".

Overthinking just a bit

@MikeMcMahonCHN: Hockey East has discussed a new point system for 2017-18. 4pts for a regulation win, 3pts for an OT win (1pt for an OT loss), 2pts for tie.

I think Hockey East fiddled with something similar back in the '90's ... OK I cheated and looked it up. See the '95/'96 RS standings (this also applied in '94/'95 but thankfully ended after two seasons):

http://www.hockeyeastonline.com/pdf/20152016/men/season_1995.pdf

IIRC it worked like this:

5 points for a regulation win
2 points for a tie
1 additional point for a shootout win
0 points for a regulation loss

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think they went directly to a shootout after regulation back then ...

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

I think they went to the shootout after a 5-minute OT Chuck.

How about adding on the following:

3 points for wins on a Tuesday or Thursday night
3.5 points for a win on a Sunday afternoon

I'm sure we could come up with more!!!

ETA: I'm pretty sure Sean Pickett would know for sure. Sean - what say you?

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Back in 1994 Hockey East voted to have a shootout after the regulation 5 minute overtime as allowed by the NCAA. Originally the league did not change the number of points rewarded for a win or tie, but gave the winner of the shootout an extra point. However the coaches disliked that the shootout winner got 2 points and the loser got 1 point, for a total of 3 points being awarded in a shootout game vs just 2 other games. So, the league modified the points awarded so that every game was worth 5 points, with a tie only worth 2 points and the extra point going to the shootout winner.

After using it for two years the league dropped it per NCAA rules when it was not accepted as a permanent rules change at that time. It appears that Hockey East was ahead of the NHL as both shootouts and awarding an extra point became part of the NHL a decade later.

So, would the standings have been different if the point system had not been changed? In 1994-95 the only difference would have been that NU would have tied UNH in the standings (32 points each), but as UNH won all 3 head-to-head meetings the seedings would have remained the same. In 1995-96 BC would have tied PC in the standings (27 points each), but PC would have still claimed the 4th seed since they won the head-to-head, 2-0-1. However, NU would have passed UNH (22 to 21 points) to claim 6th place in the standings.

Would the standing have been any different if the league had not used shootouts? Just one, as Maine would have finished first ahead of BU (36 to 35 points) in 1994-95. However, while BU and Maine tied in the standings for that season Maine was seeded 1st as they won the head-to-head, 1-0-2.

By the way, Northeastern played in the most shootouts and was undefeated, going 10-0 (5-0 each season). At the other end New Hampshire was the worst in shootouts, going 1-7 (0-4 and 1-3), while Maine went just 3-7 and Providence went 3-6.

Some great preseason form in posting here. It's gonna be a good year

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

One goalie was giving NU a chance to win games...the other wasn't.

What was Ruck's record in March of 2016?
That wasn't my point. Point is that NU'ers are trashing Roy while he had less to do with NU's record at the time than Ruck did (Roy was 2-3-1 in the same time frame). Who's to say Roy wouldn't have lit it up in the 2nd half as well?
Madigan was on the chopping block back in January... NU'ers wanted his head. By the end of March they were lobbying for COTY and a bronze statue. ;)

Yooose sure are a fickle bunch. :D

To answer your question, Ruck went 6-1-0 in March. Shoulda won the Hobey.

I'm also looking forward to the HE non-conference thread where Mookie shames every other fan base after each loss :D

The highlight of the year until the Beanpot thread and then Todd's playoff possibilities, especially if a scenario arises where he knows HE's tiebreakers better than HE.

Wake us up when Vermont does anything of note. Try getting past round 1 of the playoffs even. We will happily take talking to's from BC, BU, Lowell, PC fans on here with actual sustained success but man, win a few games first.

UVM still has time... it only took NU 30 years.

Yea when I saw the news Voss was moved to the NHL I cheered. He had very little feel for a game during his career in Hockey East. I always feel Jack Millea calls the best game with keeping under control and being even handed.

He called Pens/Hawks last night, thought he saw Matt Benning and called a phantom hook on Tyler Motte instead.

You're out of your mind. Roy should have been, worst case, 4-0-2 with the way that the team played in front of him. Bentley ganme one...11 shots 3 goals...next night he let in the first two shots he faced and 4 of the first 17 over 2 periods. The next week versus UMN he lets in 3 goals in 11 minutes.

You are not to be taken seriously.

Who's to say Roy wouldn't have lit it up in the 2nd half as well?

To put it plain and simply - and if you actually played or analyzed hockey you'd know this - NU had one legit D1 goaltender last season. That goaltender finished the season for them.
