Hobart Statesmen Hockey 2024-2025 Reigning D3 Back to Back Champions

Yeah I thought that Aurora swept Trine in conference this year...unless they also played a non-conference matchup.

Just those two times.

I forgot Trine played the western most SUNYAC teams on the road.

Trine beat Fredonia, 2-0 and 4-3 (OT).
Trine beat Buffalo State, 6-5 (OT) and 6-1.

The thing I find most interesting is two of those games went to overtime.

They also beat Chatham twice in a home-and-home, 2-1 and 3-0.

Their location allows a lot of crossover play.

They are undefeated at home. Which of course doesn't matter this Saturday.

So the Trine Thunder are playing the Statesmen this Saturday after the Statesmen received a bye in the tournament. While Hobart has a statistical advantage in scoring and defense, Trine comes from the only Conference(NCHA) that has 3 teams in the tournament, which is very impressive. Trine has also won and lost to the other teams from the NCHA, St.Norbert and Aurora including a lopsided loss to St.Norbert in the NCHA in the conference final 6-1. But they beat a solid Oswego squad 4-1 in the first round . So which Trine team will invade The Cooler?I think Coach Taylor has had ample time to study the weaknesses of The Thunder, and we'll see if the Statesmen exploit them. Will Coach Taylor continue to rotate Beaver and Mavrick or is it Beaver's tournament to win or lose just like the last two tournaments?
Great question on who gets the net...as Hobart is quite fortunate to have the tandem they dress every night. I'm not sure I recall a team in recent history that had the #1 and #2 goaltenders in the country (based on both GAA and SAV % metrics). These guys have essentially split the games all season...so I believe both are well rested and not too banged up.

That said, Taylor's decisions this season on who plays which night lead me to believe that you are correct - it is Damon's net from here on out (unless the situation at hand warrants a switch).

I watched a lot of the Trine v Oswego game. Trine is definitely a solid club - with some high end talent and a disciplined commitment to D. Trine held off a number of strong waves of Oswego pressure, including a furious Oswego attack in the second half of that 3rd period...and Oswego put a lot of pucks in the net this season. They certainly appear capable of taking out Hobart, especially if Hobart comes out a bit "rusty" from the long wait. If Trine bangs a few home early and can then go into a shell, Hobart could get in trouble.

My prediction: I think Hobart gets the job done...and the difference will end up being depth.

Agree on all fronts... I didn't watch Trine's first round NCAA game, but just like their 6-1 loss to SNC wasn't as lopsided as the score would indicate, I suspect the 4-1 victory over Oswego may have been tighter than the score suggests.

It was. Without some Major Goofs on our part it should have been 1-1 and overtime.

We've played them both.

Hobart.

Thanks for all of the other posts today , now I don’t have to date Ilama. Good insights, I watched Trine play over the weekend and their defense will certainly challenge a Hobart offense that is getting their shots but not converting them lately. I’m thinking low scoring with 2-1 or 3-2 game likely, of course I’m going with Hobart, but I also have a concern that the bye could cause a bit of rust.

100% agree we outplayed them most of the game and got caught to many times...go Bart!!!!

No disrespect to Trine...but I do agree with you. The stretch pass up the middle that led to the 1st Trine goal was a great look on Trine's part....but Oswego has got to be kicking themselves for getting caught off-guard there. The second goal was another nice transition pass (I think it was a bump up the wall in the neutral zone?)...again catching Oswego's D out of position and allowing the forward to cut in for a 1:1 with the Oswego keeper. Two HUGE mistakes right in the middle of the game...and at this time of year spotting a good team 2 goals can spell the end. Trine did a really good job keeping pucks out of the net...but Oswego definitely had plenty of looks. Two really evenly matched teams - I thought that one could have gone either way.

There are no "moral victories" this time of year, but I've got to think Oswego fans should be encouraged by how well this young team came together down the stretch.

3 Big East vs. West games tomorrow night6. Hoping Hobart prevails over Trine after they are in shock from playing at The Cooler Expect the Statesmen to send waves of skaters all game long to tire Trine out..Another game in Geneva(Ill), as Genny takes on Aurora , the winner plays the winner os Hobart v. Trine. Great matchup for the early afternoon matinee at The Aud as Utica takes on SNC , and hopefully. starts a string of eastern wins. Curry and Hamilton play the one East v. East game. Let's see if those NPI rankings hold true in this round.

I'm reading through the DIII Hockey News QF preview...will this really be Hobart's first game against a top 15 NPI opponent all season?

We could have an all Upstate NY final four...

It sure looks that way. I'm not sure if Hobart played a team this season that was top 15 (NPI) at the time the game was played...maybe?

I can't remember a season where Hobart's SOS was this weak. I'm not sayin for one second that this was intentional....this year's schedule looks a bit different than many other years and many "traditional" powers had an off-year.

I'm a firm believer in the old "iron sharpens iron" cliche...so I do admit it will be interesting to see if Hobart's schedule leaves them a bit "soft" coming down the stretch. We'll see. I know for sure that the Statesmen will not be overlooking Trine. Home ice helps a bunch....we'll see if they are up to the task.

GO 'BART!!!!

"Captain America"....LUUUUUUUUke Aquaro!! What a snipe...

Hat's off to Trine - that's a tough team to put away. Not surprised they had so much success this year.

On the the Frozen Four....still chasing the 3-peat. :p

Great goal by Luke(especially seeing it live!!) Trine came out in the second period like the team that wanted it more...a few words by coach Taylor in the locker room and the Statesmen came out in the third like a team possessed . I mentioned here before that Hobart gets the activity but they haven't been converting consistently, this must change next week. Hats off to Trine, they played tough and could have easily finished with an upset . The East shuts out the West and it's Final Four and a chance for a three peat in Utica....a much shorter drive than the alternatives.

Geneseo is first up on Friday. They were 3-1-1 against Utica and look like a real challenge for the Hobart defense. Coach Taylor needs to fix whatever issues there were in last night's second period to beat these guys. Go 'Bart.
