HOBART STATESMEN HOCKEY 2023-2023- REIGNING Dlll DIVISION CHAMPIONS

Southern Maine plays like a playoff team and gives Hobart a test, but Hobart wins 4-1 , including an empty net goal at the end. Beaver gives up a goal close in in the third period . Hobart moves on to play Skidmore next week who beat a strong Elmira team 4-1. The Cooler awaits the Thoroughbreds next Saturday to settle the NEHC Championship and determine the final seedings in the NCAA tournament for these 2 teams.

I really believe with both Curry and Geneseo losing today, Skidmore will need a win to get in. They sit at number 10 right now. One more loss and they will drop to the outside looking in.

While you might be right based on the ratings mathematics, the actual end of season results show that "on the ice" that Skidmore is the second best team in a very tough conference, especially with the last two wins over Elmira, a team that is getting in based on their PWR.As a Hobart fan, Skidmore has earned their spot in the conference final, with the best chance to beat the Statesmen.
EDIT: OK, WCHornet, after my research, you are right and it will be unfortunate that the Statesmen will have to send the Thoroughbreds home for good on Saturday. The Cooler will be "hot" with the faithful ready to witness an extension of the win streak at the Cooler to 16.

NEHC Championship tonight has the Statesmen meeting the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore .Can Tate Brandon show he really is the NEHC's first team goalie or will Damon Beaver be the first goalie on the Cooler ice tonight ? This is like a first round NCAA game as it looks like Skidmore must have a win to get in. GOBART!

Just asking for a friend :

Brandon Tate(Skidmore) was selected as first string goalie for the All-NEHC team, and Beaver was second team...curious based on following stats:

Tate. 18-4, 1.69 GAA, .938 SV %, 4 shutouts

Beaver. 13-1-1, 0.99 GAA, .961 SV%, 5 shutouts

Also in the last head-head Hobart got 5 past Tate and Skidmore got 1 past Beaver for a Hobart 5-1 win.Since Hobart has another great Sophomore goalie in Maverick Goyer ,that Coach Taylor has given important playing time(7-1 and even lower 0.91 GAA), I hope Beaver( who starts against the toughest competition, because Taylor has the luxury to save Beaver for these games) doesn't get downgraded due to the fewer # of games played. I know Tate is an excellent goaltender, but being picked over Beaver????

This also means Beaver can't be first team All American.

This seems crazy to me, especially if Beaver has a great tournament like he did last year. Although, watching Tate Brandan tonight in the NEHC Final, he has had to make 20 saves, gave up the one goal of the game and Beaver has only had to make two saves in the first period. Hobart scores early goal in second period , up 2-0...the "second period team" is starting period 2 off hot. Tate Brandon is a great goalie, but count me part of the Beaver fandom.

Hobart now up 3-0 going into third period. I'll still take Beaver.

Yep...I'm with you.

And I mean no disrespect to Brandon Tate - he is an awesome goaltender and a huge part of Skidmore's success this season. But, if I am going to pick a goaltender to take my team into the national tournament....I'm taking Beaver. Tonight he made huge saves at key moments...and he has done that all year.

5-0 win vs a VERY GOOD Skidmore team to take the NEHC title. Simply put - a dominating win in every way.

On to the NCAA tournament to defend their title. Just hoping they can keep playing at this level...right now they look to be firing on all cylinders.

GO 'BART!

Well said llama. This will get us a bye again , just like last year, which I hope doesn't mess with their momentum, as I'd rather see them keep playing, as hot as they are. In any case, it's Hartford or bust!

I think Beaver is the best goalie in the country.

But it is my understanding that if you are second team in your conference, you can’t be selected higher than second team All American. Prez can correct me if I’m wrong.

If this is true, it is the dumbest rule I've ever heard of. Beaver was just named to the All Tournament team over Tate Brandan, further showing the NEHC coaches who voted for Tate Brandan as first team NEHC goalie were influenced by something other than actual performance. No disrespect to the Skidmore goalie, he is very, very good....but Beaver should not be branded second to Brandan when it comes to AA selection time. That said, I'm sure Beaver would rather repeat as the goalie on the National Championship team and last time I checked, that is still based on performance.

I don’t think it’s a hard-fast rule anymore but what i recall happening most of the time is the leagues voting in blocks together to help promote their students and thus make them more attractive to recruits with more all-Americans etc. the two conferences that were the best at this were the nescac and the miac for a long time.

I think it would be strange to have a goalie make 1st team AA though when they didn’t even make 1st team in their conference, not saying I agree that Beaver isn’t the best goalie in NEHC or country. It’s just kind of the optics of it.

And now the Statesmen wait for the Cooler's next opponent.....a local foamy Genny or a spicy New England Curry....the welcome mat is outside the Cooler for the winner. Go Bart!

With the NEHC Championship win over Skidmore, Hobart has now won 36 straight games at The Cooler. That matches the longest home win streak in NCAA Division III History. St. Norbert won 36 straight home games from 2001-2004.

Wow. I remember that SNC streak. I wasn't paying too much attention to how close Hobart's streak was getting to that. Break the record and they go to Trinity.

For all the great Arenas that D3 teams get to call home, it would be satisfying to say the little Geneva Community rink is home to the national win streak for D3 hockey….. The Cooler is in the record books……
When you mention the idea of building a new arena/rink, the Hobart players profess their preference/loyalty to the rink….. the fans, that’s a different story

Congratulations to Curry on their win over Geneseo. You might as well stick around Western NY until next Saturday's game at the Cooler, we'll let you have some ice time during the week. Can the spice boys from Curry end the Statesmen's Cooler win streak and their march to Hartford?......we'll see next weekend .

Not sure what Hobart is doing once the NEHC implodes, but Elmira and Skidmore are excellent members and in the same conference. The UCHC seems to have a pretty full dance card and the the Empire Eight could form a league.....anyway, here we go again.

Ok Bartman ... EXHALE!

WOW ... talk about an instant classic!

Puckvoice, I'm barely breathing. That was one helluva hockey game ....second longest game in D3 college hockey. Total respect to the Curry Colonels and their goalie Shane Soderwall with a record tying 98 saves.....Hobart came out in the 4th OT and outshot Curry 16-1 and simply kept playing their game and believed in each other. Freshman Bauer Morrissey from Skaneateles puts in the goal that sends us back to the frozen Four. We have been tested and are ready to meet Utica this Thursday. It should be awesome. See you there.
