Re: He's dead, Jim.

Frank Mankiewicz, 90, press secretary for Robert Kennedy. It was Mankiewicz who announced Kennedy had died. 1968 was a year of extraordinary political turmoil, the deaths of Kennedy and Dr. King and the riotous Democratic convention.

In those days there were no cable news operations and TV customarily signed off after "The Late Show." The last network up the night of the primary was ABC, and it was they who had the first coverage of shots fired in the Ambassador kitchen. Many hours later Mankiewicz made the announcement we had been dreading. A moment I'll never forget.

Some sad news on on this Sunday night: Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident Saturday afternoon in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. The report is confirmed by Dionisio Soldevila of ESPN Deportes and Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Taveras was 22.

Per MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch, the Cardinals are waiting for more details before confirming the news.
