I also feel like if North Dakota was a D-1 FOOTBALL power this wouldn't have blown up in this way....The NCAA would never come down as hard on Florida State as FSU brings a TON of $ to the table for football. It sucks but for now that's what we hockey fans have to deal with.

So the Spirit Lake Sioux support North Dakota's name and logo. The tribal council for the Standing Rock Sioux do not support it but the tribe members do (and in an overwhelming majority)...So why then does North Dakota have to change their name and logo? It's the exact same thing as the Blackhawks and they're not changing ever. It's a classic... like Wisconsin's hockey jersey, or Montreal's. unreal. It appears (mostly) this is a case of white people being offended and telling the Sioux that they should be too, when all I'm reading is Sioux members coming out in favor of the logo. NYT had a great article on this as well with the Spirit Lake Tribe telling non-Sioux to basically **** off, this isn't your issue.

Do any of the tribes against the name have casinos? If so, organize a group of alumni and wear your jerseys into the place and tie up the slots, etc. Don't play them, just occupy the space so others can't spend money there.

The irony here, for UND and Illinois and the others is that this movement, predicated on the notion that Native Americans are offended by these nicknames and symbols (and something needs to be done about it) is almost totally bereft of Indians. In fact, the only scientific polls of Native Americans showed overwhelming acceptance of the names and symbols (even the Washington Redskins). So why are we here? How is it that a tiny minority of a minority gets to call the shots for the rest of us? And how is it that the governing body for the multi-billion dollar enterprise known collectively as "college athletics" is even involved?

Certainly no one can think that changing these names and symbols can undo the past or make the future brighter for Native Americans. So what motivates these people? I believe it's an arrogant, smirking, elitist sense of self-importance. And a desire to hurt--knowing that forcing UND to give up Fighting Sioux and Illinois to abandon Chief Illiniwek causes pain for tens of thousands of people, is motiviation enough for these people. That they can wrap their mean spirited iconoclasm in phony concerns for Native Americans is lagniappe. For sure, you won't find any of them at, say, Window Rock, helping the Navajos. That would involve some actual work and sacrifice. No, much better to pose as the friend of the Native American, and cause as much distress at these "white" universities as possible--and then head to Starbucks.

It's official, UND isn't the only WCHA team who gets made BC's bitc*h in the NCAA playoffs... you should be happy your team finally has some company when it comes to losing to a team of midgets from Boston. :D :D

Looking back at this thread, it seems like folks are just fine with a mix of serious posts and those that are blowing off steam. Hard to believe you prefer RinkPig's comments ... maybe you need to take another swig to loosen up? Maybe Rinkpig can help loosen your sphincter so you can get your head out of your a**? :rolleyes:

How about a connection to the Frozen Four Final game a couple hours ago; sitting (no, we stood the entire game) when a North Dakota fan walked by, the RIT fans chanted: "NO MORE MAS-COT! NO MORE MAS-COT! NO MORE MAS-COT!"

The RIT student section was the best group at the FF@FF (Final Four @ Ford Field), showing everyone what a college hockey game is all about!

Hopefully a few of them got shot after the game tonight. And a few stabbed too. Maybe their girlfriends could be sold into the underground Detroit Sex Trade too. That'd be a plus.

I'm sorry I'm not as amused. They sound like a classy bunch :rolleyes: I would have punched them, and any other idiot that even brought up anything like that to me, in the face.

I don't need a bunch of RIT fans to show me what a college hockey game is about. I've been to plenty, thanks.

Trust me, I despise the rodents and that colors my view quite a bit..... but I am thankful guys like Paul Ranheim, Shawn Hill, Derek Stepan, et al chose to go to Wisconsin. and I'm mostly responding to that idiot rinkswine who seems to live off ****ing everyone here off who's UW or Nodak fan.


what I don't get is the board kicks off guys like CHRIS!/Old Salty and this idiot is still around.

leave all of them in or kick them all out but be consistent

Technically, neither of the tribes were against it. Standing Rock voted in favor of the nickname, but their elders pooped the bed.

Otherwise, it'd be a great idea. In the same spirit, I suggest that alumni, along with whatever members of the Sioux tribe up for it, wear the jersey and form a line in front of REA before the next UND game.

No, they'res smarter than you because they know that "mascot" means more than just "large cartoonish costume worn at sporting events".
