So your point is what? That the statement "some anthropologists look upon 'race' as being a social construct" is correct? Thanks for the validation mope. I don't need wikipedia to tell me that. Lots of Euro-scum think of ethnicity (rightly or wrongly) along race lines which is why I qualified my statement. Like when I have called someone from the UK a "pasty skinned, dentally-challenged, bangers and mash-consumer" they get all emotional about it and start referring to my statment as racist. I don't see it that way - and I am sure the dolt Badger lover there, much like yourself, has no understanding of the differences between race and ethnicity.

By the way, I am guessing that it was the "corn pone" remark that got you all hot and bothered. Look I understand that you square state types don't get out of the country much so if you are confused by the term "bangers and mash" just wikipedia the phrase mope!

So are you saying its ok to make be hostile and abusive at ethnic groups but not races or just trying to make fun of people misusing a word that is widely misused? Maybe we shouldn't make such a big deal about slurs directed at african-americans because someone is only directing them at a ethnic group vs the entire race?

Personally I think the use of Sioux, Seminoles, Irish, Aztecs, Vandals are all ok as well as some of the other ones previously pushed to change like the Hurons. Its just sad that you come in here worry about details like race vs ethnicity instead of actually debating the overall issue.

I used to think a degree from Cornell was somewhat impressive. But passing off Wikipedia as his own material basically negated those thoughts completely.

As someone with dozens of DVDs of MST3K, Doctor Who, Star Wars, and Star Trek (okay, only Wrath of Khan) and the 3rd edition of the Monster Manual, I resent being lumped in withe Bello and company.

We have some pride.

Someone will kindly inform me how changing a nickname is going to magically reverse 500 years of genocide. I'd love to know how that works.

How is the Fighting Molly's.
There is a story here... My Great-grandmother Molly was abducted by the Sioux and they brought her back to the homestead cabin about two weeks later. My guess was she was too tough to tame! So that's my nomination.

Rest assured that any new nickname UND comes up with will be insanely stupid. probably with a random color and some sort of ****ing bird. Use Miami and what they're trying to do at RPI as an example. (still disappointed that QU didn't take our Fighting Deer Tick suggestion... sigh)

Because for the NCAA lame and pointless is better than "offensive".

I am not reading the last 333 posts... and it may have been posted already but...

Wouldn't be easy to just go with:

"North Dakota Fighting Spirit Lake Sioux".

Any paperwork gets a bit messy, but that tribe can now send a happy letter to the NCAA just like the Seminole Nation did for FSU and tada no changing logos or uniforms etc.

Just be more specific.

It won't happen. President Kelly and AD Faison seem to have pushed the SBoHE to make the decision to drop the name. Given this, they won't change the name yet keep the logo.
