HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

Personally, I don't think the Merrimack kids are classless at all. They're just college kids at a hockey game (and people are surprised that college kids from Mass brought beer). You're supposed to be rowdy at a hockey game DAMMIT. Maine fans are too nice. All UM fans do is cheer nicely for their team and whine at refs. This is coming from a lifelong Maine fan. Kudos to the Merrimack Student Section for acting like a normal hockey crowd.

Having your own rink is that all that seperates MC from being the Bentley of Andover......with lesser academics..and what is on paper and what is real in dimensions are 2 different things.....

Oh yes...it's the MC students who are classless alright....

When all else fails..insult the opposition's academic integrity! What a colorful argument!

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

Naughty children.
UNH fans are worse. They smuggle a DEAD FISH into their OWN arena.
The world is going to hell in a hand basket I tell ya. ;)

Want to turn the Whittemore Center into a real lake? Take some C4, mold it into the shape of a trout and smuggle it into the arena. Fill in the resulting crater with water. Lake Whit.

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

As I said in the Maine thread, if it wasn't a big deal the Alfond staff wouldn't care. The fact that they've said something (and said it to the media) indicates it is slightly more than just a few kids. But, hey, it's college kids! No big deal!

I think we've hosted every team in Hockey East for the QF round...I don't recall running into this issue with those big bad fans from the Boston schools or Durham. Did any UMass or Lowell fans smuggle in beer?

you know what... it wasnt that they smgggled in beer as much as they were dumb enough to leave the bottles in the stands and not dispose ofthem in the rest rooms, like the other fans do ( you would know that if you went to more than 2 games a dodecade).
but the real problem here is that Maine FANS did not buy those seats first

i am with ya.
I am a little sick of the recent geriatric crowds who ask loud children to quiet down during games... and who get whitehead to turn down the volume on the fog horn

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

never been to orono but it sounds a lot like how the crowd is at BC...a bunch of grandfathers golf clapping like kings over a chess match and then their sons and grandkids eating popcorn and texting. Just kind of odd, I've heard such awesome things about the atmosphere at Alfond, has it really slipped that much recently?

Yep. Maine fans need to loosen up, it's a hockey game DAMMIT.

The fact that Maine students don't swear is a point of pride for them and the university. The student section is very well self policed.

a. It's family entertainment.

b. Having to resort to profanity demonstrates nothing more than a lack of creativity. Yelling "****" isn't funny. But the best heckle I ever heard at a sporting event was when some student cracked Gravellese up by comparing his intellect to that of a warm rock certainly was.

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

I love the Maine student section. They are loud and creative...I just think it is naive to think that Merrimack students are only ones who smuggled alcohol into Alfond last night...

This ain't checkers, this is chess!

And yeah, if you're trying to instill a teetotaler's lifestyle in your child, I recommend not bringing them to a state university campus.

Silly me, I thought Merrimack making the HE title game last year/NCAA tourney and being in contention for an at-large tourney bid this year are what separates it from Bentley. This is a hockey board, right? So that's what we should be talking about.

Salvo, you can't use examples of when BC mopped the floor with all those terrible Merrimack teams over the years. Of course the crowd wasn't into the game. Fact is, BC has one of the best crowds in the league now and it's been that way for a few years at least.

I wasn't talking about MC vs BC games. I have been a huge BC fan through middle school and high school and always was of the opinion that the atmosphere there was soft. To tell you the truth I was always a wee bit envious of the BU atmosphere, much more hostile.

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. It's been that way for a long time in the York era. There isn't a single consistent crowd in Hockey East that meets what you're looking for. The BC crowd has been very, very good the last few years. As for the BU atmosphere, I know you must be talking about WBA...because there is no atmosphere at Agganis.

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

Maine in the 90s/early 2000s was by far the best crowd ever in HE. UNH when the Whit first opened up was good. UVM has a great crowd when they're playing well. Same with Lowell. Providence is by far the most stale crowd. BC is hit or miss, but give credit where credit is due. It's been much better lately. BU misses the WBA as far as a good atmosphere.

I agree the crowd is not loud, it's not a sellout anymore and the old timers are nice people but pretty quiet overall. Last few games I went too, I was asked not to clap too loud, don't yell, etc. What's the sense of being there if they just want you to sit on your hands may as well stay home. I still have tixs but refuse to go as long as timmay is coaching! The crowd is so complacent they are happy we are fighting for a trip to Boston? That's a joke...Maine hockey used to mark st paddys day wend in Boston on the calendar as a given.....not with timmay that's a rarity! That's why they need to can him ASAP....he will never lead this team anywhere near a title and anybody who thinks so is smoking all that medical marijuana-oxy that is so prevalent up there!

Re: HEA QF's: #5 'Mack @ #4 Maine

It's mildly shocking, although only mildly, that on the day of a #4 v #5 game three match-up that the debate is over student behavior (in particular regards to drinking) and BC fans. Over the first two games we have seen the best and worst both of these teams have to offer. Last night was not without goonish behavior from both teams. That being said, Merrimack carried the play for large stretches especially in the second when Benedetto, to some degree, let them play. If Maine fans want to harp on college kids drinking beer, then I'm on the wrong board. Instead ask why Flynn, Abbott and Diamond felt a need to resort to the LCD, only one night after dominating play. As for tonight's game, I'm excited to see the best line in HE square off for the third time in three nights versus arguable the best goalie and blue line in the HE. Classic immovable object meets unstoppable force, lets hope the zebras try not steal the show again.
