HEA Mens 2022 Tournament Mega-Thread

Picking a team to root for there is like choosing between a root canal and a colonoscopy.

No one asked you to, but I can see why you would want to abandon your pathetic team.

Can’t wait to see the terribly coached UConn team in the HE finals after their 8th season in the league. “Luce” has the boys buzzing and the program making noise. You haters are all morons.

Is there some UNH-UConn rivalry i missed? I mean it's only natural to hate such a loathsome place like UConn but this is news to me. UConn doesn't deserve Mike Cavanaugh.

Other than Chuck crapping all over their coach since forever? No.

Let me tell you seeing that game in person UML was lucky it wasn't 5 to 0 in the first. Tonight is going to be a great game and I would not be surprised if UConn wins it if UMass can't handle their physicality. Matt Murray needs to be ready. Of course no question UMass can bring it, but, won't be the least bit surprised if UConn upsets...Penalty box time for UConn could be their death knell?

Hockey East is guaranteed of at least 2 teams in the NCAA tournament. UMass as a 3 seed and either UMass-Lowell or UConn as a 4 seed. They could have 4 teams in if UConn wins tonight and both Harvard and Bemidji lose. Lowell only needs one of UConn, Harvard and Bemidji to lose. Northeastern needs two of those 3 to lose.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not a hater. However I do enjoy stats and what they tell me is that it's highly unlikely Coach Cavanaugh will have long term continued success. Since WWII there have been 426 head coaches of current and former DI programs and of those only 168 were still coaching at they same school after 8 seasons. Of those 59 had a cumulative winning percentage below 0.500 and of those just 20 had not won a postseason series/game after 7 seasons. Of those 20, Coach Cavanaugh is the fourth to win a postseason series/game in his eighth season or later and the second to do so in his ninth season or later.

Doug Ross, started UAH from scratch and built them into a DII powerhouse before they moved to DI, where he still had some success, but not to the same level.

James Fullerton had three winning seasons his first eight, but his ninth season was his best, when he won the Ivy League title, made the ECAC championship game and Brown was selected as the second eastern team for the Frozen Four.

Amo Bessone's seventh season was his first winning one at MSU and he followed it up with an even better eighth season when MSU was selected as one of the two western teams for the Frozen Four and he coached them to the NCAA championship game. He went on to win the NCAA title 7 years later, but had very limited postseason success otherwise and finished his long career with just 12 winning seasons out of 28 and a losing cumulative record.

Actually I got UConn at +135 for tonight so I am rooting for the Huskies. Just remember if/when you guys are skating the trophy around the Garden tonight you and your ilk put money in my pocket.

Allentown: Michigan v AIC, North Dakota v Notre Dame
Worcester: Mankato v Harvard, Quinnipiac v UMass
Albany: Western Michigan v Northeastern, Minnesota v St Cloud
Loveland: Denver v Lowell, Minnesota-Duluth vs Michigan Tech

Only HE team I am bothered about is UML, they play a boring but effective style of hockey> Disappointed for Uconn, much as I don't like their fan base they play a tough physical brand of hockey. Cav has done a great job in building the program and I expect he will begin to get higher end recruits in the coming years just like Carvel at Umass. Cav could become the next BC coach when Jerry decides to put the whistle away. Jerry will have a lot to say about his successor and I am guessing that there won't be too much of a search. He will pick the guy who best fits in the culture at BC and has proven that he can be successful at the highest level of college hockey. Anybody but UML, ND or Minnie Duluth.

Not sure you can compare years 2 and 3 of Cavanaugh when he was in Hockey East with limited scholarships to coaches who didn't have that handicap.

According to UConn's NCAA Financial Reports the men's hockey program awarded 11.77 equivalencies in athletic aid and exhausted eligibility or medical eligibility in their first season in Hockey East, 17.77 in their second season and 17.87 in their third season. So please stop using the false claim that Coach Cavanaugh had limited scholarships. See my NCAA Hockey Financials spreadsheet where I have compiled the financial information for the DI hockey programs from 2010 through 2020.

Okay so Cavanaugh's year two, not year three. That's pretty substantial.

On his overall nine seasons/eight HE seasons? You can't use a few less scholarships for one season to explain away his pedestrian record over his tenure as head coach.

Seems crazy to say with HE going 0-3 but they actually played better than I expected up against 3 of the top 6 in the PWR. All three had a legit chance of winning and UMass will really be kicking themselves today. Being up 2-0 and 3-1 and not winning is stunning given how they play. So maybe we're closer to the western teams than we thought.
