HEA Mens 2022 Tournament Mega-Thread

Depends. Connecticut is the most insane college basketball state in the country (and no, I didn't forget North Carolina). It started in the 50s with Hill House (24 state championships, the first of which was in 1924) in New Haven and has never abated. You can't be in two places at once (we're talking about actual attendance...not just watching on TV), so 99% of people, given a choice, will be at the basketball venue. If they can't get there, they will be watching on TV. I went to the NCAA first round at the Harford Civic Center (or whatever they call it now...it was the Civic Center then) back when Mike Jarvis was coaching BU (and Jeff Timberlake was the star point guard)...there were 17,000 UConn crazies and about 100 BU fans. I've seen UConn in other parts of the country...I lived in Connecticut for a brief time and EVERYWHERE you go there are posters, t-shirts, store coupons, deals; it's just ALL UConn basketball. And they will definitely be in the NCAAs because they're 22-8 and the #3 seed in the Big East. That tournament begins the same weekend as the Hockey East Finals at the Garden. I'm sure there are "hard core" UConn hockey fans, but I'd be greatly surprised if you see a large # of them there. Just my opinion...

Ya, I guess my scenario is in a vacuum. If you take hoops out of the equation I think they would bring a huge crowd to the Garden. Even with hoops in the picture I would be curious to see what they bring. I am assuming a lot of UConn alums in Boston area. If the men's hoops game is on Thursday or Friday afternoon, watch at a bar and hit the Garden. They will lose to BU anyway so won't matter.

I said before, no issue with the first round games being one game but how do people feel about the QFs? I still prefer best of three especially when you consider the #1 seed is squarely on the NCAA bubble. I feel like those top teams deserve a best of three based on what they did over the course of a long season. Why was it changed to single elimination?

A cynic would say it's all about money. Those quarterfinal series are usually fairly empty (see BC tonight?), taking place during spring break. By cutting it to one game that slices the potential losses as well. But I doubt that's the official version you'll hear out of Hockey East HQ.

The insanity of having all teams in playoffs continues
The fans aren't fooled- Less than 1100 at BC and providence
Resurgent Merrimack had 2,500 happy for that program

I'm going to blame a combination of crappy weather and spring break for a couple of schools (BC). I was at the 'Mack game. Great crowd and a really good game for Merrimack. Much more team speed and skill than Maine.

I'm guessing it would depend upon which four teams actually get to the Garden. If it's, say, (no disrespect to anyone intended) Merrimack, UConn, Providence and someone else, I would think the numbers would be lower than usual, simply because of proximity reasons. But also, many fans who are not close to the Garden (like BU, BC, NU would be, for example) might be saving resources for future potential games (NCAA). Especially given that it now takes $100 to fill my wife's gas tank when it was $60 about a month ago...
Honest, it doesn't require a flight and a hotel stay to come from North Andover or Lowell. I think each of these teams would bring a strong contingent. Lowell has been there before, but 'Mack not so much. I think they have only made the semi's twice, and finals once in '11 against BC (great game, great goal by Cam Atkinson for the win).

I'm happy for them too. It's always a good thing when a program is on the upswing, because it's good for the sport. Having said that, I'm going to guess that the majority of Merrimack students are local? Which would make it easier for them to attend, even if they HAD BEEN on break???

Don't know if it is a factor, but completing the first two rounds in four days is nice. It would be a brutal disadvantage for last night's winners to face a 2 of 3 series with one days rest with that day likely a travel day.

I was at the Mac game also and agree it was a great atmosphere. Beer sales were brisk! I've attended 15 games in the area since Thanksgiving and Merrimack is the fastest team I've seen. Maine had size but was noticeably slower.

I believe a lot of the students are local. Pres. Chris Hopey has really grown the school and energized the alumini. I was skeptical of moving all sports to D1 (yes, lower level D1) but they are holding their own in most cases Even though they'll be on break next week, I think we'll bring a good crowd. We'll always be the annoying little brother to the BC's of the world, but sometimes the little brother wins!

Well, they only lost by 1 to BU Basketball (who won 21 games and will most likely get invited to the CBI)...so I would tend to agree.

In my experience, the attendance for playoff games at PC has always been horrible from 1996 forward. I remember there were decent crowds when they got to play Maine and Merrimack (!) at home but that had more to do with the road fans. Yes, Merrimack brought a lot of people for that series and it was a lot of fun.
I have no idea what to expect from Uconn playing BU at home and neither do Uconn fans. They've never won a Hockey East playoff games and BU has been hot - BUT they just lost to BC and Maine.

What’s your prediction? Queue Mr. T looking directly at the camera: “Pain”
Seriously, this is wide open and any combo is possible, but next Friday night will be: UMA vs BC; UML vs BU

Could be a doomsday scenario for Hockey East if you care about league pride. If the following teams were to all win:

UMass
Merrimack
BC
UConn

Would just increase the chances of only getting one team in the NCAAs.

Possible but unlikely. UMass, Lowell and Northeastern should all remain ahead of Ohio State even with a loss today. It would take multiple upsets around the country to dislodge them.

Ironically, upsets also increase the odds of Hockey East getting a fourth team into the national tournament. If one of them grabs the autobid (15th/16th) and the rest of the conferences go as planned then UMass, Lowell, Northeastern and the autobid all qualify. You can thank the new playoff format - it's easier for a team to get the upset in one game than a series; plus only one loss instead of two (someone has to lose next Friday) will guarantee teams stay above the cut line. If these were two of three, then a loss this weekend and a loss on Friday would probably eliminate a team or two. On the other hand, a team like BU is hurt because the Terriers need wins and this limits opportunities.
