Harvard Crimson Women 2012-2013

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 2012-2013

Bad enough that Harvard had 2 defenseman missing all season this past year. Now, hearing that 2 of their incoming Assabet defenseman were injured at Nationals - Natasha Rachlin dislocated her shoulder and Briana Mastel suffered some sort of knee injury. Starting to wonder if it is safe to go to Harvard...... wishing Rachlin and Mastel quick recoveries.

That girl is a player, maybe not a 30-40 goal kid but good at every aspect of her game. Fun to watch, tons of skill, big, strong and super smart player.

One thing I noticed in the several times I have seen her play is her tendancy to not come back into her own end, and limited passing. However, I doubt that will last long in Cambridge and she will boost the Crimson offense.

I will agree with that to some extent with EDGE, but she doesn't play that way with Canada's 18u.

So between Emerance (28-save shutout of the U.S. in 2012) and Karly (OT game winner for Canada in 2013) Harvard will have the biggest stars of the last two U-18 Worlds.

Are they going back to their heydays when Canucks like Corriero, Botterill and Vaillancourt were the stars of the team ?.

Well, of course you also had Mleckzo/Ruggiero/Chu/Cahow contemporaneously: yes those Canucks were stars, but not necessarily THE stars in every season. And Kessler was definitely a star too, and they could have seriously contended in 09-10 if she had stayed healthy. But yes, it's good for Harvard to be getting top Canadians again after years when so many went to Dartmouth and then more recently Cornell.

Well, they got 1 Canadian player (I think) in each season 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, two Canadian goalies in 2012-2013, no Canadiens in this upcoming year (both of their Canadian commitments for 2013-2014 were weeded out in admissions according to 2013-2014 thread), and 1 Canadian so far for 2014-2015. Looks like 1 Canadian per year for this 5 year stretch - pretty consistent. Is the issue that the quality/talent of the Canadians hasn't been very high the last few years - Maschmeyer excluded?

I believe Harvard still has one Canadian coming in for 2013-2014. A defender hailing from Quebec.

Defeseman...defenders play soccer and lacrosse and whatever.

I agree, but I typed that post on my phone and defender was fewer letters than defenseman. I chose brevity over technical accuracy.

Not exactly.....U forgot the N.

In the case of the female game like the use of Defense better than Defenseman. This is where the French language works so much better with the options of défenseur and défenseuse.

if you have one of those smart phone auto correct options, it often changes things to words you did not intend to type.

In that case, D has even fewer.

It depends on the context. Sometimes "defense" can be ambiguous and it is unclear whether it refers to an individual or a team. The same issue can exists with defender -- it could mean a forward currently defending. It may not be be the most PC, but at least everybody knows what you mean if you say, "the defenseman made a great play." The same statement is less clear using either "defense" or "defender".

Unfortunately, many people think you need to be gender specific. However, if you ask a kid on a U10 team or an All-American what position they play they will tell you defenseman, or D. They will never say defender. Nor will an official say they are a Lineswoman.
