Harvard Crimson Women 2012-2013

Re: Video pass

Re: Video pass

Yes, they are annoyingly vague and in some respects self-contradictory. I feel like the 20 Minutes segment that posed the question "do you need to have a degree in electrical engineering from MIT to know how to operate the remote control on your TV?" and then they put on an electrical engineering professor from MIT who said he didn't have the faintest idea how to operate it.

But it does appear that the package is worth it, in the sense that it is better and cheaper than Harvard's stand-alone package last year. It's just not clear whether the 8-team super-channel would provide more extensive Harvard-related coverage (Ivy tournament games? okay, but there aren't any in fb, BB or hockey. More away games? don't know, they keep using the weasel word "selected" away games) than their Harvard-only channel.

Re: 2013-2014 Roster

Re: 2013-2014 Roster

Just getting caught up.....and continuing to think about the age-old questions of long and short benches, Zdeno Chara-like minutes, and roster versatility.

This year's roster contains just 10 forwards, 6 of whom were on the top 3 lines last year and 2 are freshmen,
while there are 8 D, including 4 freshmen. Should be interesting to see how the lines and pairings shake out.

At D, while we can expect Edney and Gedman to play major minutes, there will be plenty of playing time left this year for the others. After all, Picard and the seniors who graduated played somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 of all D minutes last season. Next year, in contrast, when Pucci and Picard return, there will be an awful lot of by-then veterans competing for ice time before Pucci, Gedman and Edney all graduate in 2015-2016. So look for 2014-2015 to be the year of the Big Push, at least with that much talent competing on D.

This year the wild cards will probably be (1) how quickly the freshmen will develop, (2) whether this year's coach will have any different approach to the long/short bench issue, and (3) how our opponents, particularly the other Beanpot schools, will feel the loss of their own key players at the national level (I think BC and BU lose 2 apiece, NU, UNH and Cornell 1 apiece, after discounting players who've already graduated).

Are we sure that Picard and Pucci are playing in the Olympics next year? Is it a lock?

Yes but even they don't make the final cut Harvard is without them for the season.

How is that possible? The Hockey Canada camp is taking place at this moment and is scheduled to conclude on the 18th. That's plenty of time for Picard to start her junior year and be academically eligible if she is cut. I would assume the same is true for Pucci. Why keep a player for several months, then cut her in December or January? Basically takes her away from her college team and school for a year with nothing to do except get a part-time job or perhaps take a class or two during second semester.

It is called Centralization. Right now USA Hockey is holding their Women's National Festival in Lake Placid and when that is done the women will assemble in the Boston area to train for Sochi. Final cuts will probably be made after the Holiday Camp at the end of December. School does not factor into the equation at all in an Olympic year.

edit: I thought they were holding the WNF now, but it doesn't show up on the USA Hockey site, so maybe they aren't.

I think they are just holding the U-18 camp.
