Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

The announcers are brutal

This comment tweaked my interest, so I watched the next day. Worse than brutal - embarrassing. I had to turn the sound off. But I want to try to be constructive. So here goes (and maybe this could be a thread "What should we expect of student announcers"):
1. Stop being "homers" every second.
2. Less is more. It really is.
3. It is o.k. for the play to speak for itself. You don't have to fill every second of air time with talk.
4. Criticize as well as praise, both with moderation.
5. Coaches aren't above criticism.
6. Learn the terminology. It is not a "slapper", or a "wrister", or a "snapper".
7. Do a little homework and learn who the players are on the other team.
8. Listen to the great sports play-by-play announcers and color commentators and try to learn from them.
8. But above all, stop talking so much.

I'm actually okay with "wrister" and "snapper".... my new recent favorite is the "juicy rebound"! :D

They must be taking a page from the Jack Edwards" talk you to death" method of hockey play by play. "sends one down the river", "juicy rebound" , all done to death by Edwards. He is the captain of hyperbole. Less really is more'

10. Listen to, and learn from, Harvard alum, and women's hockey announcing guru, Brian Shultz. It doesn't get better than that.

Actually I don't think Harvard's announcers are quite as bad as a few others (which really isn't saying much). I do agree 1000% with all the comments made. And I agree Brian Shultz is top-notch. Here's a couple more things

1. Actually read the media guides from each of the teams to at least pronounce all the players names right. Especially your own team, lol. The versions they come up with are absolute classics. Laughable and bad. It might help to learn something else interesting about the players/team/coaches too if you absolutely can't shut up.

2. Stop repeating the same information over and over throughout the game. I watched one game this weekend where a kid got hit by a puck in the first period, but was not injured. They repeated it and commented about it ad nauseum all game long. We heard you the first time, and no one cares anyway.

3. Re: the terminology....why does every announcer call it "off sides"? Drives me nuts. Never heard this before except in US college hockey where it seems to be the norm. The correct term is off side, singular. You are either on the right side of the line (in neutral zone) or the wrong side of the line (offensive zone) when the puck crosses. If you are on the wrong side, you are off side and the play is whistled down. Otherwise you are on side. You just can't be off more than one side. (sorry, end of rant...I just had to get that out)

Timeout right there- I'm not going to claim I know who does women's hockey broadcasts, but I just want to make very clear- the people on GoCrimson are not WHRBies, and I actually don't think they are students either.

We are not large enough a department to be doing men's and women's hockey at the same time. You'll hear our student broadcasters for the Beanpot.

So I'm not going to say your points don't make sense and you shouldn't expect those rules you posted to be followed in any broadcast, but don't PM me asking me about the broadcast team. They are not ours.

Harvard school of mathematics? Sorry! Couldn't resist! I just looked back and realized what site we were on. I can't believe I missed this opportunity the first time!

Seriously, good points...though as I said before the #6 point doesn't bother me so much!

HEADS UP

Tonight's game (Nov 13th) against Quinipiac has been postponed. It has been rescheduled until Sunday the 15th at 1:00PM. They hope to pay tomorrow's game against Princeton but I strongly urge you to check the www.godrimson.com website to be sure it is being played if you have a long drive in. I drove in from Minot, MA for the game and discovered it was cancelled.

It appears that one of the ice surface workers, in trying to drill the ice for the pins for the goal got overenthusiastic and drilled through concrete into a coolant pipe. They told me they hope it will be fixed by tomorrow but I intend to check the website before making the drive. Reminds me of a few years ago when both Zamboni's selfdestructed on the ice and a game against Minnesota Duluth was cancelled.

While getting into the mood for the drive home after the nongame I chatted with another season ticket type about the missing sophomores, Ling Ling Lok and Whitney Kennedy. It appears that Ling Ling is still at Harvard but concentrating on her studies. Whitney is taking the fall semester off and plans to return to Harvard in the Spring, practice with the team and return to playing next year. No guarantees as to accuracy but the gentleman who told me this follows these things pretty closely

And yeah, I agree, wrister and slapper are acceptable terms just don't use that every time.

New topic- trying to gauge alumni/fan interest in the game tonight- should be a big one, but a midweek game is always a tough sell I imagine. I already know what student interest will be  so let's not get started on that topic, but I should be there and maybe the band will be as well.

Actually, I'm kind of excited as I get to go as a fan to this game instead of as media.

One comment for fans to consider is whether or not the audio is actually part of the videocast or audio that is piped in to serve alongside the video. For example, if I'm doing a game that is audio-only, I would increase "puck geography" terms to try and clue the listener in on where the action is taking place. If I have a good video feed at my disposal, I can cut back on some of the nitty gritty, engage in more discussion with the color analyst, etc. because the audience can generally see for themselves what is going on. However, if Harvard is mixing a radio broadcast with a video system, then the announcers' primary obligation is probably still to the radio audience, in which case they should call the game as if people can't see it. I don't know their setup, they don't allow their own alum come back to call games...at least not for free the way I would want it as part of our program.

As far as what to expect from student broadcasters, the necessary information is out there to be had if the people are hungry to learn the game and do their best to learn their craft. I never had any training and I still learn every time I put on a headset, that's part of the fun and part of the artistic challenge.

A lot to be proud of so far

A lot to be proud of so far

Perhaps it's time for a bit of Prince Hal's "we few, we happy few, we band of brothers" rhetoric for this team.

They just tied the #2 team in the nation; lost in overtime to the #10 team; lost at the very end to the #4 team; lost by one goal to the #8 team; and won against their other three opponents.

Consider that they've had only 14 or 15 skaters and that a third of the team is playing their very first college varsity games!

The goal for the season, once potential scoring leader Ryabkina is back, would be to make the NCAAs by either placing high enough in the powerwise or winning the ECACHL tournament -- not an unrealistic goal if the first-years continue to develop as they have so far and they stay healthy from now on.

It's nice to see everybody getting ice time and that should boost morale of all concerned. It's also nice to see they've carried over the proficiency of prior years' teams in areas like backchecking, the breakout, and cycling. They must lead the nation in crisp shots on the ice within six inches wide of each post, and later in the season they'll have the timing down pat to tip a few more of those in as Jenny Brine used to do. The continuity of this team's style of play is indeed remarkable: for example, when Coskren or Bassett plays a wing on the PP, you recall Cahow doing so, and Banfield before her, and Ruggiero before her.....

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Nice win by the girls tonight. Well done. With Minnesota coming in next week, this will help continue the momentum and hopefully carry them through exams.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

really nice third period in particular. Amazing that they caught up in SOG by the end of the game!

Nice to see Lisa R. back; the difference with her on the ice was pretty clear.

I'm looking forward to those Minnesota games!

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Yes, another fast-skating, exciting game. This team seems to outskate most opponents (and skated even with UNH) yet appears fresher and stronger on their skates than their opponents towards the end. Pucci really has a cannon from the point, doesn't she? Ryabkina makes the first line a dominating presence when they're all out there together. Interesting to see all the players getting ice time: basically, two forwards anchored each line and took every regular shift while Ryabkina (working her way in after so many weeks away) and the other forwards alternated on different lines. This is a classic way for a coach to reward whoever is playing best on a given night with ice time that night, while still giving everybody an opportunity to play every night, in constrast to the rigid nine-player fixed rotations of past seasons.

If they can skate this way against Minnesota, they may be able to pull one upset next week.

I thought they were pretty much outskated by Dartmouth for the first two periods. (Dartmouth is also the faster of the two teams). Might have had something to do with the poor sharpening that appeared to have been done to their skates, as quite a few seemed to have trouble staying up on their feet.

Miss Pucci is certainly fun to watch, especially since she seems to have free reign to attack at will in the offensive zone. Not too often you see a D hunting for loose pucks in the crease...behind the goalie.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Any way for Gopher fans to watch the games this weekend? Live stats?

Thank you!

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

As far as I know, Harvard offers a pay per view webcast, but I've tried to get to the page a few times, and it is so slow to load that I've given up.

Game time is 4pm, as listed on both school's sites as well as the ECAC's, NOT at 7pm as listed on USCHO and College Hockey Stats.

I saw it this morning; they list a subscription price, plus a one-time price that was < $7. Also, they showed a live stats link.

I assume that is Saturday only, and Friday is still a 7 PM EST start (because that's what both schools' sites show.)

Unfortunately, the 7PM game time is only for Friday night. Too bad, as a later start time would likely have added quite a few more fannies in the seats, particularly among the youth hockey crowd. the Crimson men are not playing this weekend, so it should not have been a problem to have a 7PM game on Saturday night as well.
