Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Fans of other teams get bored in the offseason as well. This is a discussion, nothing more. You made some points, others raised counter arguments.

And unless a lot has happened to you outside of this thread, they haven't. Most fans have just said that some players for other teams are better than you think. Hardly the stuff of lynch mobs.

But if this forum has changed to the point that we are constrained to speaking only of our own team, then I agree that a Harvard/Minnesota series this season will look drastically different from what we saw last winter, because so many of the impact players for both sides are gone. The Gophers lost so much firepower that I wouldn't be surprised if they emphasize D this year and try to play more 2-1, 3-2 games. We'll know more once the teams start playing games, but I expect the Crimson to match up better against them this time.

hyperbole.

Re: Ten Forwards on the Roster?

Re: Ten Forwards on the Roster?

Unless Pucci or Brawn plays F, there are only ten Fs on the currently posted roster. Eight D, two G.

I'm told Wisconsin regularly rolls out four lines.

Only one sophomore on the roster (Kennedy and Lok are not listed, neither are juniors Stephens and Uber)

What's the explanation? A glitch in posting the roster, I hope.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

I don't see Harvard having 10 forwards as a problem. It all comes down to coaching philosophy; whether fans and players agree with it or not, Coach Stone traditionally goes with 2 lines and a 3rd thrown in the mix. 2 lines are preferred against stronger competition/tight games. 4th line is used very sparingly. This has burned Harvard many times in years past, but this is the standing philosophy. Go Crimson!!

Well, I would agree for the most part except that in recent years, Katey has had very good depth and in '08, we regularly rolled three lines with different sets of penalty killers. Not surprising that we steamrolled through the ECAC that season.

Last year, we got off to a slow start and had to rely on the first line more than I think even Coach Stone would have liked. I don't think you can go two lines anymore because women's hockey is starting to show some depth in the lower tier teams so if you don't roll three lines, you're going to be in trouble towards the end of the season.

BTW, it looks like I missed something regarding alslammerz and a discussion about goalies and the Beanpot? I've been away from the board for the most part but now that hockey season is right around the corner, I guess I'll be posting more often.

Wisconsin and Minnesota traditionally have good depth and it's no accident that they have been contending or winning the NCAAs. The Ivies will have a tough time matching that depth.

Nope, Kennedy and Lok are def. both not playing this year. I had heard that rumor from someone earlier in the post, who heard it from some of the team, and the roster confirms it.

Didn't hear yet about Uber, but I'm assuming it's the same situation. And generally speaking, I could guess now why they aren't playing, but as a media member as well, it's a boundary issue if I can discuss things that aren't officially released by the University.

and skate, you didn't miss much- I was just looking for some backup for my statement that Kessler probably enters the Beanpot as the top goalie since Schaus is missing a year- a statement the other three Beanpot schools took umbrage with.

Schaus is a great goalie but if she is taking a year off, then yes Kessler is the best goalie of the Beanpot schools. Let the others whine. The stats back you up. I look for Kessler to have a big year this year despite the relative inexperience of the Crimson squad.

I think it was just the "far and away" part that people were arguing.

Regarding our roster, is there an explanation that won't violate trust or the confidence of Harvard insiders? I'm surprised that so many players have decided not to return. Uber took a regular shift on the third line. Why is she bolting? Kennedy was projected to get a regular shift as well. She was looking forward to this year when I last spoke with her.

Is something going on with the coaching staff that is at the heart of all of this? Any insights are welcome. We're awfully thin up front and as a team in general if this all plays out.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

If I'm counting correctly, every healthy player will dress for every game this year, they will have fewer than the permitted maximum number of players whenever somebody is injured or ill, they won't have a third goalie and if a fourth line is ever used, it will include a couple of defensemen.

Of course I'm not saying that with the promising freshman class there isn't enough depth to throw out three good lines and three good defensive pairings every night, assuming not more than a reasonable amount of injuries and flu; but it does make the no-fourth-line philosophy a foregone conclusion.

No doubt one reason why only one sophomore is listed on the roster is that the team looked so deep for the '08-'09 season that it discouraged prospectives who were looking for immediate ice time.

Does Harvard still have a JV team? If so anyone there that could step in and help if the varsity has some injuries or other unforeseen issues?

You should be very pleasantly surprised with Jillian Dempsey. While indeed a college rookie, she has aquitted herself quite well playing with and against seasoned NCAA veterans.

There must be something shady going on behind the scenes that we as outsiders can't see. It could be the team dynamic, the coaching staff or a long list of other issues. But with so many players jumping ship, there has to be something going on

Not likely. What you see on the roster is what you are going to get this season. A couple of years ago, we had to call in a non-recruit to back up Brittany Martin because we were down to one goalie (Christina Kessler hurt her knee and didn't play first semester).

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

It will be interesting to see how the Ladies perform this Saturday in their exhibition game against the the Toronto Aeros.

Unfortunately, rumor has it that Lyza R. will not be available for a couple of months due to injury.

If that's true, the roster situation for this particular team is a little frightening right now.

Also don't read too much into anything with players leaving. I've been told by Hux (thanks Hux, I need to rep you at some point for the info) that at least one player who is not on the roster is only off because of an injury that will cost her the season. (I won't say who because my new official personal policy is to keep all injury news under my hat unless I guess official word that it is ok to say it.)

So yes, there's a low number of skaters on the roster, but we are not at the level of systemic danger that some people made this out to be in some of the previous posts.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

What happened in the Aeros vs Harvard game? Nothing on the Harvard site. On this site on the scoreboard the game has vanished. It was there prior to the start of the game and this morning no trace. Was it an embarassing loss for Harvard?????????? or not a large enough win?????

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Probably because it was just an exhibition game. Those do not always get reported. Its pretty much up to the school if they want to report it.
