Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Great season for Harvard. But as some of the posters have said, your goalie can' t be giving up one let alone two soft goals at this time of the year. Feel bad for him.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Would've liked to see some embellishment calls against UMD, and think that was too quick of a whistle on what should've been goal #2.

I was pulling for Hahvahd here, shame to see you guys lose such a heartbreaker.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Are the Bruins going to chase donato like they did with forsbacka karlson?

I'm sure they will but I also think the possibility of playing with his brother would be a strong incentive to stay a year.

Of course if USA Hockey decides to chase him for the Olympics...

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Huge congrats from the Big Green; way to represent the Ivy League and ECAC. A very tough loss indeed. I agree with most of the points already stated however I will add one important one. Leading up to the winning goals Harvard initially had numbers 5 feet from the blue line but could not get the puck out of the zone then puck gets dug out and goes to the D while Iafallo goes to the net. A great look and combination on that goal. Raskob had every reason to shoot...off wing time and space and he slides over to Iafallo with Esposito trailing. I too thought both goalies looked shaky and with Madsen giving up a terrible goal to end the first. For my money, Kerfoot was the best player on the ice along with Joey Anderson of UMD. BTW I had Harvard in both of my bracket pool and draft/pick em pool. Oh well!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

I didn't get to see much from Harvard this season, but you guys had one heck of a team. Tough way to lose on that stage, but Duluth is a very solid team (North Dakota got beat by them 5 times this season). Good luck next season, and I'm sure Harvard will be back in this spot sooner than later. Be very proud of your team, and to echo some of the other posters...great season.

We are certainly proud of them. Thanks for the good wishes. Hope we get to play you guys in the near future.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Heartbreaker of a loss. Too bad that quick whistle on an obvious loose puck and goal prevented Harvard from taking the lead. Key point was when Donato broke his skate and was off the ice until the final goal. Don't understand why Harvard didn't use their timeout until after the goal. They could have stalled a bit before calling it just as a face off would be taken and used it to get Donato back before the goal.

Yeah from watching it on TV and replaying it a thousand times by rewinding my DVR, I thought the whistle came after the puck crossed the line. But officials are loathe to reverse a call like that when a whistle is involved. It was close to be sure.

Regarding Donato's skate, I'm not sure they would have had enough time even with the timeout to get him back out there. I might have used someone other than Floodstrand for that key face-off. We just lost D zone coverage on the play in addition to the board battle.

Given that Don Sweeney and Teddy were Crimson teammates, I'm not sure Don wants to ruffle feathers at this point by going after Ryan. I do think that Ryan will jump ship after next season. His game took a step up during March and he'll be ready for the Bruins after his junior season. I doubt his Dad will stand in his way.

I have no qualms about the officiating. We got away with a big trip from Zerter Gossage in the third period and it was a legit trip. Kerfoot was tripped during our PP when he broke in alone. There were calls that were either missed or ignored on both teams.

Goal #2 - judgment call. Thought it was in but oh well...

Luke took responsibility after the game bemoaning the fact that he didn't do a better job of blocking or clearing that blue line attempt. He knew it would create a problem. But look, there were a million and one plays that could have gone either way. UMD had glorious chances to jump to a big lead in the first only to come out tied 1-1. We hit the post three times. Games like this magnify every play. Better to celebrate the accomplishments of this senior class and team and realize how far they have come in four years.

IF I wasn't pulling for UMD, I would have liked cheering for Harvard, they were fun to watch. Great skaters. Glad to see Harvard do good. I didn't know until last night they won the Beanpot.

Didn't Donato come in a year later than most elite guys? Age 19 after he was drafted? Meaning he could be a free agent if he returns to Harvard next year and then doesn't want to sign with Bruins? I am assuming he does want to sign with Boston but wondering if I have it right that he would be a free agent next August.

Not sure about his coming in late but the Bruins own his rights up until July 1st after he graduates from Harvard. So they have until then to sign him. If July 1st, 2019 passes and he hasn't signed on, then he becomes a free agent much like Jimmy Vesey.

The Devils took note of what happened with Vesey and the Preds and are going to make a hard push to sign Alexander Kerfoot before July 1st. Same with Sean Malone and Buffalo and Tyler Moy and the Preds (they must love having to deal with Harvard kids). That's why teams prefer to sign these kids after one or two seasons a la McAvoy. I don't believe incoming age has anything to do with it but there are people who are closer to the game than I who probably could answer this for you.

Thanks. You guys have a tough and well balanced team. I watched the end of regulation and OT of the BU game. Despite BU tying the game late, you didn't wilt and came through when it counted. Says a lot about the character and intensity to win. Good luck tomorrow.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

I thought it was 4 years from when you were drafted. So for example, Donato drafted in 2014 but didn't arrive at Harvard till 2015-2016 season. Vesey drafted in 2012 and arrived at Harvard fall of 2012.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Congrats on a great season.18-0-1 unbeaten streak was awesome.
Thought the United Center would be crimson-gold-crimson on Saturday.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Great season by the Crimson. Congrats................reminded me of 2007 .Tough way to lose.

We can't be sure but my guess is that Ryan will stay on and finish Harvard. If Jack joins the team that would be an incentive. I can't remember how old Nolan is but he might head Harvard's way also. Makes me think of the time when Harvard has three Moore's on the team.

It was a great game to watch. UMD had a team that looks bigger and looking at the faces on the bench looked older than the Harvard team.

I wish they had won but have no complaints about this team. It brought back memories of the teams of the late 80's. Looking forward to next year.

footnote on ESPN coverage: The announcers did seem to be UMD fans in their comments. I tried to listen to WHRB but they were broadcasting with a tape (?) delay of 25-30 seconds and it got to confusing so I shut off WHRB and just listened to the television.

Glad you brought that up, because Buccigross and Melrose just copped out by essentially confirming the referee's decision. I don't think it was in before the whistle, but I believe the shot was released before the whistle, which means it should have counted. I get it that the "intent" of the referee is subjective, but his intent has to be to blow the whistle before the shot is released, not before it goes in. It doesn't matter when it goes in...it matters when "play" was intended to be stopped.
