Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Why? These kids have few choices until they hit UFA. Especially given that the $ is going to be the same for him regardless of location, let him pick the best spot for him.

I think he made the right call, but rumor was Nashville was offering him top line minutes for the remainder of the season. Not sure there's another team that can offer that.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

So did he essentially forfeit a chance to burn 1 year off his ELC and get closer to RFA in return to pick his team?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

I'd be pretty surprised if Toronto did anything against the rules here. They had to know this would be scrutinized so I'm sure they have all their ducks in a row. Similar to how you see college football/basketball programs hire these AAU or high school coaches etc. to help secure a certain recruit or recruits. Seems fishy but in the end, what can you do about it?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

There have been several non-Ivy players who have done this as well. See Hayes, Kevin.

It's now happened enough that it could have two effects. One, teams will put incredible pressure on underclassmen to sign due the perceived risk of letting a draft pick get to his senior year. Second, college players' draft stocks could begin to fall, again because of the perceived risk.

I certainly think that the NHL owners will be revisiting this come the next CBA.

Bode Wilde going to usndt so foregoing OHL.....for now

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Moral of this story for NHL teams is not to blow picks higher than the 6th or 7th round on Ivy league kids. More often than not they are going 4 years to school. Not that there is anything wrong with that. The only reason to draft an ivy league kid any higher is the Ryan Donato situation where he was talented and drafted by the local team.

Not necessarily. Alex Killorn stayed four years and stuck with the team that drafted him. He has had a very good career so far. And some Ivy Leaguers will leave school early (LeBlanc, Lane, Aaron Israel from Harvard) if they think they have a better than average shot at the pros. Gostisbehere stayed four years - think the Flyers are unhappy about his decision to stay?

Vesey has every right to pursue this strategy and time will tell if this is the right choice. Toronto is gearing up for a run at Stamkos and having Vesey on his left side will make that one heck of a line. I can understand Nashville's not being happy about this but they had to know it was a possibility. Kudos to Jimmy for finishing his degree on time and with his classmates.

Gostisbehere left after 3 years.

Sorry, it was a great story right up to the point he dumped on the Preds. Bad advice. Goes around comes around world.

Time will tell. Given Vesey's track record on and off the ice, I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt. Either way, he will own the outcome regardless.

Ronnieb - sounds like you have some skin in this game given your one-sided perspective,

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Well sources are saying he is going to go with the Bruins now and not Toronto. He's ruffled some feathers in Nashville by not meeting with Preds brass in Worcester after elimination this weekend and telling them all along prior to the trade deadline that he was going to sign with them.

There's always 3 sides to every story.

Have your sources checked with hoky?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Hoky is never wrong so vesey will sign with toronto!

I think everyone can agree that if he declined to meet with NSH and lying about his intentions...that's shady. Who knows.

Right. I realized it soon after I posted. But the rest of the post reinforces that players will do what they think is best for them. I have no idea what Vesey's 'team' is telling him about making this move. What I do know is that in Vesey's post in The Player's Tribune, he talked about the quarterfinal win over Yale and the excitement in the locker room after the win which convinced him not to leave. Had the Crimson lost to Yale, one wonders if Vesey would have skipped his senior season and signed with the Preds. We'll never know.

I'm also wondering about an item in Fluto Shinzawa's Sunday Notes column in the Boston Globe in February where he speculated about this very situation and openly floated the idea that Toronto would be hot after Vesey come August. Knowing that Jimmy's dad is an area scout for the Maple Leafs, I can't help but ponder whether or not Fluto talked to Vesey senior or if Vesey senior dropped that nugget in Fluto's lap. Given what has happened this week, Fluto's post now seems to take on added significance.

He may very well have intended in February to sign with the Preds once the Crimson finished their season and everything he has stated on record has been positive about Nashville. None of us know definitively why he changed his mind. Perhaps one day he will shed some light on his decision but for now it is his choice for better or for worse.

Or perhaps Nashville decided to make private conversations public, the Vesey camp was surprised and disappointed by such a decision, and just now releasing their perspective in which they did tell Nashville about intentions.

This does not look good for Nashville.

Greg Carvel has accepted the job at UMass. Wondering if Pearl has interviewed for any other openings? Hoping he will stay around for at least a few more years.

Or Vesey (at least right now). When is the CBA up? Will be interesting to see what happens. And by no means do i have a problem with Vesey not signing. That's his right. If you're going to draft an Ivy kid or someone similar, you should be prepared that they stay 4 years. Once it gets to that point, can't blame a kid for looking at his options.

This is where I am at. I'd recommend these NHL GM's draft the Ivy League kids in the 6th and 7th round not the third round where it hurts more when you lose a guy to free agency.
