Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

WE'RE GOING DANCIN' BABY!!!!!

Wow, what a run. It looked like we were dead in the water a few weeks ago. Now, we RULE!!! This team showed everything - guts, speed, skill and determination. No quit despite having to go three games at Yale and 2 OTs to win it.

Here's hoping the committee keeps us in Manchester or Providence. I want to be able to see the team one last time in person this year. Actually, maybe more than one last time. Like in Boston in a few weeks maybe? :)

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Congrats !!! Good luck in the regionals, show them what the ECAC is about !!!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Congrats to the Crimson. Keep it rolling right into April....and tell Vesey to enjoy this last bit of collegiate hockey before cashing the check!;)

What do you mean? He's coming back to grab that Hobey since it's the Eichel show these days.

Beyond thrilled. Can they get a #2 seed?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Thanks for the ride into the show, we may have to meet for the seventh time! Nice run in the tourney.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Congratulations to the Crimson, and thank you very much. Vesey gets my vote for the Hobey. He carried this team all year !!!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Really a great game with Colgate fighting to the end . . . the individual skill levels on the power play made me think I was watching the upper 20% units with Scotty Fusco and Tim Smith from the mid-80s.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

These kids can play, what an effort! As for Mr. Vesey in the ECAC playoffs: 9 goals, including 4 game winners, and 4 assists. And he's still got games to play...

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Congrats. I don't think that Harvard is a team many guys want to see in their bracket.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

The most respected bracketology pundit (Jason Moy) has Harvard vs Denver in Providence.

Reminds me of 1986. I wonder if Scott Fusco will be in the stands watching and remember getting run in that semi so that he was not able to play against Michigan St. in the final.

ESPNU is carrying the NCAA men's hockey selection show at noon today. Can't wait. Please keep us in the East!

I remember that Frozen Four. Denver targeted Scotty with a knee on knee hit. They knew the Crimson didn't have the depth at center behind him. What they didn't know was that we had tremendous heart and a never say die attitude that carried us until there were only a few minutes left in the championship game. I still maintain to this day that if Scotty were healthy, we win it in '86.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Some leftover thoughts while basking in the afterglow of last night's triumph.

1. How fitting was it to have Colin Blackwell ice the game with his empty netter? With all that the kid has been through these past two years, watching him scoot up and down the ice is sheer pleasure. He has been a major catalyst during our run. Just hope that he stays healthy well beyond graduation and has a full and productive life. Really great kid when you meet and talk with him.

2. With apologies to Ted Drury and Dominic Moore, there is no question that Jimmy "Hobey" Vesey is the best player we have had since another #19 graced the Bright Center. There are so many similarities between the two. Laney's vision, his hands and ability to maneuver and create space for scoring opportunities was second to none. Vesey does the same for Harvard along with some grit and nastiness. It may be too much to ask at this point to have him come back for one more year but if Harvard comes up short for the national title, it may spur him to return. I hope he does because watching him and that first line is pure joy. Yeah I know Eichel is probably going to win the Hobey but Vesey is playing on another level. This tournament run has been historic in some respects.

3. You can tell that Patrick McNally is favoring his leg and is only really at maybe 80%. He has done a very good job of protecting himself against potentially damaging hits. At 80%, I'd take McNally over most any other D in the ECAC right now. He is a horse and his presence is one big reason why we're dancing next weekend.

4. The big ice sheet gave Harvard plenty of room through the neutral zone and it was puzzling to me why Quinnipiac and Colgate allowed the Crimson so much space. Yes our speed created a lot of that but you still had to wonder why those teams didn't adjust. The Crimson's neutral zone trap was so effective against Colgate. They had almost nothing going on for them except for those two face-off wins which resulted in their goals.

5. Expect that some school will come knocking on Paul Pearl's door after the season. You can't help but notice the influence he has had on the team and surely, somebody out there will want him. Will he want to stay as an associate head coach? I know that for family reasons, the move to Harvard made sense but at some point, he is going to want to run his own program again.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

This team overcame so much adversity this season and that, more than the talent, is why I am so optimistic as we turn our heads to the NCAAs. By the way (and we know that there could be some casualties to the Pros), but Harvard does not have one senior forward that plays. Can you imagine this team next year if Vesey returns and McNally and Blackwell get more eligibility?

Check out the below in terms of the talent and the # of games missed (Harvard played 36 games this season thus far):

Kerfoot - 10 games (#1 Center)
Malone - 16 games(#2 Center)
McNally - 16 games (#1 D, PP catalyst)
Blackwell - 26 games (#2 wing)

Not many teams would be able to overcome these caliber losses and Harvard almost did not.

I believe that Harvard is 15-2-1 (with wins over BU, Lowell, BC, and Yale) when this group is healthy (except Blackwell who was hurt through most of the first half run).

Now I need to figure some things out. I have one trip East in me. Do I head out this weekend or do I pray/hope and head to Boston in a few weeks?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

In terms of the bracket, I don't really care who we play. I just would like the three ECAC teams to be in different brackets to see if somehow all three could make it to Boston. Now that would be cool!

Hope so.....hate it when they load up a bracket with teams from the same conference. Really at this level they should screw the travel involved and just load the brackets with teams as they deserve to be instead of constantly tinkering to eliminate this and that. After juggling for spreading conferences away from each other, I think they should let the chips fall where they may after that.

Congrats on a nice win last night and good luck in the tournament. It's nice that you have your team nearing full health as you approach the tournament. The main knock/weakness I see however is an inability to deliver a knock out punch and keep the other teams in the game. Hopefully you can correct that in the tournament.
