Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Sure it's early, but I like this development. I also noticed that BU tied Union tonight. I wonder how next week's polls will look.

I thought about that as well - missed the game as I was in DC visiting with friends who are not, unfortunately, college hockey fans. Still had a good time.

At this point, I'm not worried about Pairwise or KRACH or any other measurement. Realize that we won't be playing any NCAA tournament games at Bright-Landry so it doesn't matter a whole lot except for seeding purposes and location. Obviously we want to be playing in the East as a high seed but frankly, if we play to our strengths and skate for 60 minutes, I like our chances.

Agreed. Want us to get and stay healthy. Kerfoot is critical. Jaw and Blackwell are important.

Be interesting to see who laces them up against Yale. We owe them!

We sure do! Agree about Kerfoot and Blackwell. Less so regarding Jaw although after watching Guiltanan against RPI, I may rethink that premise. They may be holding Blackwell back for later in January to keep him as healthy as possible for the stretch run. Concussions are tricky and nothing to fool with.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Harvard wins 4-2 (eng).

National audience and given Harvard's ranking, I am sure that many will take some of the game in to see if Harvard is for real.

Yale has played 2 games since Harvard last played, including a 3-2 loss to Nortgeastern in which they squandered a 2-0 lead. Yale will be hungry!

I get so frustrated with Guiltanan, every time he is on the ice I hold my breath waiting for a penalty. Would much prefer him out of the lineup. Do others think his play is worth the PM he put out last year?

He's still adjusting and while the penalties are tough, he brings a physical presence / intimidation factor on a defense that doesn't have a ton of size. He's gotta find the right balance.

Harvard has had success with similar players over the years such as Kevin Melrose.

I'll take a 4-2 win any day of the week. :)

I'm not crazy either about having so much time off unless it means that Kerfoot and Blackwell are back for this game. I would rather have played at least one game last weekend even if it was against a weak opponent.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

I hear ya, I was just hoping that being sat for the first half of the season would send him a message to clean up his act. Very excited to see if Kerfoot is back in the line up, but really enjoyed Moy getting a chance on the first line.

I hear your frustration but as Both suggested, he is still adjusting to the college game. He does bring that physical presence much like Melrose did for the championship squad. If I remember correctly, Laney once spoke of how Melrose intimidated the forwards in practice so that they would be ready for whatever opponents dished out during an actual game. Melrose also put the fear in other teams' forwards when he was on the ice. Some time after Melrose graduated, I spoke with Greg Carvelle who played at SLU and was a scout for the Anaheim Ducks. He told me that none of his SLU teammates wanted to go into the corner if Melrose was on the ice because they knew what he would do to them. That kind of intimidation helps players like Jimmy Vesey and Alex Kerfoot who are not big forwards. Let's face it, Guiltanan sent a message to RPI when he flattened that forward along the boards. It opened up space for us to subsequently score and take control of the game.

I don't see Harvard all the time, but I see them at least a few games a year, and I've always considered Vesey a good sized forward. Vesey's 6'-3", 203 lbs. There are only 2 other guys (D-men) bigger on the team and only one other forward as tall as 6'-3". What do you consider to be a big forward?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Vesey is a big guy. Of course it's not his role to initiate contact, and he rarely does.

That's disappointing about Kerfoot, he is really needed down the stretch. I don't think Harvard is #1 Pairwise without him.

Excited to see how it goes against Yale. And I really hope the team can be back to full strength by the Beanpot.

Vesey not 6'3" or would have been a first rounder with his skill set

After checking rosters around both the ECAC and HE, there does seem to be a preponderance of forwards in the 6-1, 6-2 range with weights around 190 to 200. But then there are also guys like Alex Tuch from BC (6-4, 220) and Jordan Samuels-Thomas from Quinnipiac (6-4, 190) that I would consider big and rangy. When I look at Vesey, I just don't see the kind of physicality that makes for a 'big' forward. But perhaps I'm just not looking at this with the proper lens.

Maybe we're confusing height with other physical characteristics? In other words, I would say Vesey is tall but looking at him, he doesn't appear to me to be physically imposing. That doesn't mean he isn't strong on his skates - he is. So i guess I'm defining 'big' as physically imposing a la Milan Lucic.

Regarding Kerfoot. Disappointing but if we can save him for the stretch run and keep him healthy through March, then I'm willing to sacrifice tonight's game. Not that I want to lose but his ability to stay healthy and play is key for us.

It says he is on his Bio, and the Harvard Roster. Anyway, I've seen him a number of times and always thought he's a big kid. More of a Kris Kolanos than an Alex Tuch, but good size just the same. Either way... the kid can play.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

He isn't
Didn't get drafted higher because of skating. Just like his dad, avg at best feet, great hands, great hockey IQ, great compete level.
Dad was a great college player, great. Not a good pro because of skating
I see the kid overcoming it and being a very good pro. Its always interesting to see dads who went D 1 to play vs get a great education and play hockey, set yourself up for life. Smart parenting. Hats off....

Hockey rosters lie constantly. I've seen plenty of guys who don't match their listed height and weight even if they are in full gear.

Beat Yale tonight! Excited to get to go to a game.
