Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

He isn't
Didn't get drafted higher because of skating. Just like his dad, avg at best feet, great hands, great hockey IQ, great compete level.
Dad was a great college player, great. Not a good pro because of skating
I see the kid overcoming it and being a very good pro. Its always interesting to see dads who went D 1 to play vs get a great education and play hockey, set yourself up for life. Smart parenting. Hats off....

Well, okay, he isn't Johnny Gaudreau but who is? I think Vesey's skating has improved and he wasn't a slouch to begin with. There are guys who can skate like the wind and have zero hockey sense, terrible hands and no on ice vision. Remember the Blackhawks experiment with speed skater and gold medalist Ard Schenk? They tried to turn him into a hockey player based on his skating ability. That lasted all of five games I think.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

He will make it just fine. I was simply saying that was what kept him back in draft etc
Will be a very good pro

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Just looking through last night's scores, and realizing that North Dakota lost to Minn-Duluth and BU tied Wisconsin. Both match-ups repeat tonight.

Ooops addendum: I just saw how the Badgers "scored" one of their goals again BU. I guess that's not likely to happen again anytime soon!

Take aways:
1). Michalek had a tough game
2). McNally injury is biggest story. Killer if injury is serious
3). Score is a yawn. Harvard missing 3 of 4 best players
4). Harvard did not play well. Move on and get ready for Clarkson and SLU
5). Harvard still #2 in the PWR
6). Malone not playing was a surprise.

Yale again, though this time not much of a contest. Fun to see them on the big stage via the big screen. The Bulldogs looked good, but yes it was the Crimson performance that determined this game's outcome. I'm all for leaving it behind and moving forward, with so many other big games to come.

Impressive turnaround underway for you guys. Really look strong in many areas, most importantly in the area of wins and losses. Question if anyone knows, but is Paul Pearl responsible for special teams for Harvard? The team was very good on the PK last year and that continues, but the power play is light-years ahead of where it was in the last couple of seasons. Sorry if this topic was addressed in earlier posts, just don't want to go through the whole season's worth.

I think Pearl is responsible for a lot more than the PP. He has gotten the team to buy into a system that takes advantage of their speed. That is one very big reason why we are doing so well this year. Minus Saturday's game of course.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Okay, so we own Yale in football but can't seem to beat them in men's hockey. This is frustrating beyond belief. And now we have more injuries to deal with. I hope the wheels aren't starting to fall off the bus.

Regarding Saturday night. What else can you say but the Eli were on us from the drop of the puck. Their puck possession was astounding at times and we could never get our system going to the point where we could put pressure on their goalie. The game was a lot worse than the final score.

The injuries are a concern. We're now missing McNally, Kerfoot, Malone and Blackwell. Jaw returned but played right wing which made no sense to me. If these players are going to miss significant time, I would do the following:

Move Moy off the first line and pair him with Esposito on the second line.
Move Hart to the first line or put Caffery at center on the first line with Vesey and Criscuolo and leave Hart on the second line.
Move Zielonka from the fourth line to the third line with Seb Lloyd and Jake Horton. Dress Tommy O'Regan for the fourth line or put Gozzo on the fourth line.

If McNally is out for any length of time, move up Newell or Aiken to take his place.

Just some thoughts in a worst case scenario and I'm truly hoping that we start getting these players back sooner rather than later. We've got the North Country schools in this week and then the trip to Ithaca the following week.

Harvard #3 in Pairwise now.

It's all about getting healthy and defining the team. Interesting that Jaw was at forward and not D b/c I think he has been such a pleasant surprise this year. Remember that he was a forward prior to coming to Harvard. Was he playing forward due to injuries or is Ted going with a more physical back line, bringing in Gultianan for Jaw?

McNally, kerfoot, and Malone are musts for this team. I think that Malone and kerfoot have played maybe 1 game together (Lowell?). Amazing how successful Harvard has been this year without one of their top 2 centers being healthy.

With health, I like our chances to sweep this weekend. If not, I'd be happy with 3 pts.

I think Sean and Alex played together in the Princeton game only. I don't remember Sean playing in the Lowell game.

It is pretty remarkable to think of the wins over ranked teams without a full lineup. But at this juncture, we are not going to surprise anyone. So we have to be ready for everyone's "A" game every weekend. And Michalek may have to stand on his head a few times to steal some wins.

Interesting thought about Guiltanan and Jaw. I forgot that Jaw came in as a forward - he played center originally right? KG definitely brings the nastiness along with the penalties. If he can manage to avoid too many trips to the box, he may help more than hurt the cause.

Didn't see the game, but dropping 6 on Tech while missing 3 of your top 4 players is pretty good.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

I couldn't get to the game, but caught the 1st on WHRB and the 2nd and 3rd via Digital Ivy.

The game was at times much closer than the final score suggests. Clarkson was up 2-1 at the first intermission and trailed by just one as late as 5 minutes left in the 3rd period. The power play did not look very effective last night. The Crimson seem to continue to be vulnerable to aggressive forechecking in their defensive zone as well as often struggling with mid ice possession, and most of their opponents lately seem to be taking advantage of this.

I would contend that if the Crimson are to be considered a legit #1-4 team - as I believe they are - then they are going to have to win nearly all games vs. this level of opponent, using all of their depth, even if a they have some guys out with injury. It's great to see the 2nd and below lines playing very well and contributing so much.

Harvard back to Pairwise #2.
BU lost again.
So yes, a good night for Harvard hockey.
Definitely looking forward to seeing what St. Lawrence brings!

The PP is going to suffer without McNally. He is the catalyst who often brings the puck into the zone and establishes Harvard's presence. He is far and away Harvard's best puck moving defenseman. I wonder who Harvard had in there as his replacement? Everson would be my guess.

Tonight will be tough. SLU does not have any Jimmy Vesey's on its team, but they roll 4 lines and compete. They are always well coached and play the game the right way.

Any time a team can win while missing so many of its high-end guys, that speaks volumes to the depth and belief of the team. While not a dominant performance, last night was a solid win for this Harvard team.

Thank you, I appreciate reading your insights. I think I also tend not to adequately discount opponents when they are missing key players -- Clarkson being without their favored goaltender last night, for example.
