Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Vesey - fantastic. 2 goals and an assist. Great skater.

Criscuolo and Jaw - good together on a line with O'Regan. Going to be a solid pair of forecheckers as the seasons progress.

Hart - threw the body, took 3 penalties

Gozzo - somewhat quiet night on 4th line with Placek and Seward...didn't notice this line on the ice often though the stats say Placek had 5 shots.

Bergin - nothing spectacular on a pairing with Max, but didn't have to be either.

Total freshman shots...15.

Um, some needed alterations here. Jaw centered the fourth line between Gozzo and Placek. He did well on faceoffs but needs to improve in both zones. Hart played on the third line with Criscuolo and O'Regan. They got better as the game wore on. Criscuolo missed on a late game breakaway. He has good speed and good hands. Bergin was steady and not afraid to take the initiative in the offensive zone. He'll get better every week.

Seward didn't dress.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

This is the first time in several years where Harvard has a favorable schedule to start the year. They open up with lesser non-conference teams (who always have games in hand) and the Ivies, as opposed to having to play the RPIs, SLUs, etc who like non-conference folks, have 4-5 games in hand to iron out the kinks.

Not to put the cart before the horse, but momentum is a powerful thing and I think Harvard has a real good shot to be 3-0 before facing a very tough Union team at home.

Agreed. And Bentley had already played several games before last night's game and yet we matched them stride for stride in the first period and then blew their doors off as the game wore on. The score doesn't indicate how one-sided this game was for the most part.

BTW, I sat near a couple of Tampa Bay Lightening scouts. They were there to watch Hart (too bad because Hart didn't do very much and the penalties didn't help him). I asked the scouts about Alex Killorn. They said the organization feels he is one of their top prospects and a sure fire NHL pro. They expect him to take a regular shift with the big club in the next couple of years. They love his game and his attitude. Great to hear on all fronts.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I know this is going to sound outlandish after one game but is it any accident that Vesey wears No.19? As in another, ahem, Harvard alum who donned that jersey with fabulous results. Yeah I do think that Vesey is the real deal and he will grow into the same role Laney served so admirably for the Crimson. Both players see the ice in much the same way and have great hands.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Might be a little early to compare Vesey to Lane McDonald, lets give him two or three at least before we start comparing him to maybe the best Crimson ever...

A more apt comparison might be another number 19, Killorn. Big, fast, offensive flair. Keep in mind as well that Killorn really grew as his 4 years progressed, going from (from memory) 13 pts to 19, to 28 to 46. Certainly what we've seen from Vesey so far gives one hope that he'll make a real impact for Harvard this year and into the future.

Sorry, my apologies, I was working from memory. Much harder to get numbers right sans a line chart and not being above in a press box. Got Jaw and Hart confused. Didn't realize I had too many players either, so I took a guess at what the 4th line was. I'm going to head to the box for two minutes to feel shame.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

My blog entry on Saturday's game is here.

A few other thoughts pertinent what others have mentioned:

- The Bentley uniforms were a sports-information nightmare. I felt bad for the guys in the press box, especially at Bright with the offending party shooting twice at the far end of the building. I mean it with all sincerity when I say that dark numbers on dark jerseys should be outlawed by the NCAA.

- Harvard definitely took too many penalties in the third period, but the elbowing call on Hart looked suspect, at least on the Internet stream, without the benefit of replays from different angles. He caught Tyler Krause with his head down and the puck between his skates. I didn't see an elbow, and if there had been one, it would have likely been a major and more, considering the vulnerability of the player. There was a scrum following the play, but it appeared only unrelated to that hit. As he got up, Krause high-sticked Tommy O'Regan in the face (well, the cage) after the whistle, and O'Regan went after him.

- I agree with the Vesey-Killorn comparison (at least with this small sample size), with the big body, No. 19 jersey and same spot on the power play. Vesey and Greiner have combined to fit in to Killorn's old roles nicely.

- I think how well Bentley was playing prior to this game has been understated. That, and the fact that Harvard hasn't been able to get opening wins the last couple years, is cause for optimism. Then again, Harvard's 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons started with promising wins and did not end well, so there's a long way to go.

I believe it was at least within the rules proposals. I'm not sure if it made it in, though.

Fixed your post. Admittedly they looked much better in Melissa's pictures but live...difficult to read, difficult to look at.

As for how well Bentley played coming into the game...no disrespect to UAH, but that game doesn't really say much. As for the Michigan game, not really sure how Michigan struggled in that game. I was impressed by most of Bentley's fans Saturday. I was not impressed by their team. League competition is a completely different beast but I expect Brown to be a much stiffer test.

Already have my tickets for Friday and Saturday night. Hopefully this time I won't be the only person in Crimson in my section.

No worries. It happens. The press box isn't the best place to get nail every detail. I know because I've broadcast from up there and it can be a nightmare sometimes.

Well I did preface my remarks by saying that it was perhaps a bit outlandish. Maybe more than a bit. But the kid does remind me of how Lane would approach the game and his on-ice vision. Of course we need to see much more from Vesey but so far, I'm impressed.

Yeah, the Bright's is not...and I'm not even there anymore. My usual seats are in Section 10 right above the zamboni entrance. Tough to see. Remembered my glasses today...that helped. If only Harvard could have done some of the scoring down my end. Still, a win is a win. Feel bad for the Brown frosh defender that left the 1st period hurt - USCHO and CHN reporting it could be a season long injury.

Yale tomorrow night. Coming off a 7-4 loss to Dartmouth, you know they are going to bring it. Let's keep it up and get win number 3 on the year.

Don't like hearing that the Widman injury is serious. He is the player who hit Blackwell in the head or back of neck (that's what Blackwell was holding) early in the game.

Never forget the glasses!

Yale will definitely be bringing it especially after last year's quarterfinal series. You know they are still smarting over that one. At the same time, I think we'll be just as hungry for a win tonight. I like how we are taking the play to the other team early and often. Just wish the power play would get untracked. Like tonight maybe??

The PP had some moments yesterday...they almost had that tic-tac-toe play we saw so often last year. Greiner, from Killorn's spot, sent it to Fallstrom, who one-timed it back to Everson. Unfortunately for Marshall, it skipped over his stick. Speaking of that play, did anyone else think the ice was choppy last night? Seemed like a lot of bouncing pucks for both teams.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Post-game recap: Yuck. To be fair the game was closer than 5-1 indicated but still...Yuck.

ECACHL championship rematch next Friday against Union. It'll be interesting to see what players they have on the ice - some injuries coming into tonight's game against RPI (Bodie stands out in particular) and read two guys got tossed in what sounded like an ugly third period at Messa against 'Tute.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Obviously, I am biased but Yale really brought it tonight, thought it could have been more than 5-1. Shots were 50-30 and they stopped counting Yale's shots. Yale had closer to 60+. Harvard has some serious speed though and will be a force this year, just did not have it tonight I guess. I look forward to seeing them play again at the Yale as the pace was extremely fast and physical.
