Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Not sure what the story is on Michalek. I did see this:
http://finishyourcheck.com/topic/68774-cedar-rapids-adds-harvard-goaltender-steve-michalek/

and sound a few twits on twitter. No idea why. Hope it is not a Gov 1310 problem.

As to Bradey Jaw, I was chatting with him at the game on Saturday. He was there in a suit and said he had a strain of the ACL but did not sound like a season ending thing.

RPI game looked to me and some of the RPI players are really huge but it appears like Harvard' tradition of recruiting for speed over size paid off.

It could be one of the following scenarios:
1) Harvard & Michalek mutually agreed to park him in JRs for a year and then he comes back without losing a year of eligibility.
2) Michalek was tired of being 2nd fiddle and didn't feel he could practive his way to more playing time and he is done with Harvard.

Jaw played Saturday night.

Sounds like Steve is coming to Cedar Rapids.

I am a Roughrider fan, and saw a tweet by Matt Moran, of OHL Central Scouting, saying Cedar Rapids has picked him up. I have talked to a Roughrider player who stated "it sounds like he is coming in right away"

The funny thing is that Peter Traber is/was a draft pick of Cedar Rapids but never made the roster out of camp. Sounds like the two could be trading places.

Let us know if he is coming back to Harvard or if he's putting his services back out in the market?

I know he didn't play but does the fact that he suited up for 3 games mean he burns this semester's eligibility? If so, option 1 seems unlikely.

Hoping for the best for him and shocked by the timing of it.

Not sure on eligibility stipulations.

If it is #2, it doesn't speak highly to Michalek's long term capability as a goalie. Just about the only thing you can count on in life is competition!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Let's hope our recent good form at Lynah continues. Not expecting Atlantic City but hoping for a W.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Looks like Traber is backing up Girard. Anyone hear anything new on Michalek?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Wow, what a game tonight. Cornell really took it to us in the second and third periods but we withstood the onslaught. Girard, after a weak first goal, stood tall the rest of the way. Cornell's D isn't as good as in prior years. We just couldn't get anything going consistently.

NBCSports sent their #1 broadcasting team to call the game. Really has to help us to win on national TV for recruiting purposes. Not to mention it is so sweet to BEAT CORNELL!!!!! Especially at Lynah.

Brian Hart didn't dress tonight. Blackwell and Jaw were also missing again. And we still won.

Cornell fans were their usual obnoxious selves - really pathetic cheers when their team is clearly going to lose. Guess that is what you have to expect when you spend winters in Ithaca.

On to Colgate. Meanwhile Dartmouth visits Lynah tomorrow night. Can you say 'sweep'?? Could very well happen.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Great game is right!

Cornell dominated froma possession and territory standpoint, but per usual, Cornell forwards are a bunch of pylons with little to no skill. All Cornell does is cycle around the perimeter and when the puck does find its way to the slot, the shot goes right into the chest of the goalie. Very underwhelmed by them. They passed the puck around for 90seconds on the PP before registering a shot. Earth to Cornell - you can't score if you don't shoot. I was shocked after seeing Cornell lose so convincingly last weekend against inferior teams - but after watching them tonight, this is a subpar Cornell team - at least right now they are not a very good team. I expect Dartmouth to beat them tomorrow.

On to Harvard. Vesey is the real deal. The best forward in this game....and by a long shot. Everytime he touched the puck, you felt like he could do something dangerous with it. Great speed, great stick, and great vision. I thought Harvard's defenseman were ok....too many give aways and against a better, more skilled team - they would have been made to pay for those. Need to do a much better job of taking care of the puck in their own zone.

Biega is great. He's going to be a huge loss next year. So steady, eats a ton of minutes against the top lines, and just plays the game the right way.

Blackwell is hurt - I hope it's not serious as he is one of the top 3-4 players on the team. Don't know about Jaw and Hart, but Harvard definitely missing some key guys which makes this win all the more solid. This freshman class is a throwback to the 80s. They can all play and skate. Love it!

On to Colgate and hope this isn't a trap game after a gutty performance against an arch rival.

Kinda expecting a letdown vs. Colgate but I don't care...we beat the Auld Enemy Cornell. There was an alum/seniors event for Harvard-Yale at John Harvards and after requesting the game get put on, a lot of people were paying attention. And we won! That's the best part. I love when we beat Cornell especially at Lynah. Already looking forward to February.

Now beat Yale tomorrow in football and my weekend will be complete.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Some thoughts on the game with the euphoria a little off.
1. Cornell held advantage in quantity of chances but we had much better quality of chances.
2. Our freshmen did well against Cornell, relatively speaking. Favorite play was in the 1st, Vesey holding off players at the wall until Harvard cleared the zone, then skating in and setting up a chance.
3. Our new road jerseys look awesome.
4. Girard played well despite the softie in the 1st.
5. Our speed has been troubling Cornell lately. Hopefully that continues in February.

Also Casey - Fick has been skating at forward a lot on the PK. Saw it during the Union game and saw it during an earlier PP than the one you mentioned on the blog. It was pretty funny to see, because on McNally's penalty, Fick was already out on forward, so we ended up with 4 defensemen and 1 forward on the ice.

Nice win for you clowns last night. It always fun to see that "look" on Schafer's face after a loss to Harvard

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Of all our D, I thought McNally played the best overall game. Yes he had some giveaways but he was all over the ice and in the offensive zone, he wasn't afraid to take chances especially on our first goal. If he can continue to play that way, he'll develop into a Top 4 D. Biega ate minutes and was very good in his own end but McNally just seemed to have an extra jump in his step last night.

Congratulations to Harvard coming into our barn and playing a good game.

Hope to return the favor at Bright. We'll be sure to bring our "pylons."

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions on travel to and parking at the game. It was a lot of fun, I like the close atmosphere of Bright. Harvard played really well, it was a fun fast-paced game. Best of luck to you the rest of the season!
