Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Obviously, I am biased but Yale really brought it tonight, thought it could have been more than 5-1. Shots were 50-30 and they stopped counting Yale's shots. Yale had closer to 60+. Harvard has some serious speed though and will be a force this year, just did not have it tonight I guess. I look forward to seeing them play again at the Yale as the pace was extremely fast and physical.

No I think the shot totals were closer to 50. Whoever was keeping the shots was having problems logging them so there were inaccuracies from the get-go. That said, Yale skated us out of our building. The score didn't indicate how dominating the Eli were tonight. Root is a terrific player and I really like what O'Gara brings in terms of skill and on-ice vision. The kid is the real deal.

We just didn't bring our 'A' game tonight and it showed. From the drop of the puck to the end, Yale ruled. Hard to swallow but I suppose since we've dominated the football series, I suppose we have to pay in hockey. Except for last March. :).

Harvard is a good team with a very good goalie. But we have a ways to go before we can consider ourselves a top four team. With Union on the horizon, we better have a great week of practice and come ready to play next Friday. Otherwise we can expect the same result.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Post-game recap: Yuck. To be fair the game was closer than 5-1 indicated but still...Yuck.

No it wasn't. Yale dominated from start to finish. This wasn't close. We couldn't get our legs moving and Yale stuffed us in every zone. They blew us out and we need to own up to that and go back and have a great week of practice. The Dutchmen will do the same if we show up next Friday with the same effort.

Disagree. Malcolm made some big saves. Crimson just missed a few chances. It was a 2-1 game through 2 and the 5th goal was scored with 6 seconds left, and even that was scored by Yale rushing the other way off a near miss from Harvard (that saw everyone in desperation mode crashing the net, including the D). Except for a big stretch in the 2nd period where the Crimson could not clear the puck out of their own zone, game was even in terms of territory. We were snakebit at times, there were times we tried to over stick handle but we did not get skated out of our own building. Like I said, except for a stretch of the 2nd, we skated evenly with them and it was a quick, physical, back and forth game. This was not last year at Ingalls...that was a game we got run out of the building.

Sorry, but got to disagree. Harvard got chances, but did nothing with them. Most shots on semi-breaks hit Malcolm in the crest (when they were on net). It was not a good game for Harvard. Might have felt like a good game a couple years ago, but my expectations for the Crimson have been raised.

Obviously they did nothing with the opportunities...but they had them. (If they did something with the opportunities the scores would be closer - which was my point.) There were years that Harvard didn't even get opportunities. They didn't have them in New Haven last year. Not taking anything away from Yale as I thought Yale played a really great game but I don't think that was a blowout. 2 of Yale's goals came with Harvard in desperation mode, one with 6 seconds left, and everybody wants it to seem like Harvard was lucky to only give up 5. We lost, it was a bad result, but it wasn't a blow out.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Dear world: There's not just some guy with a notepad counting up the shots for each team, and what's on the scoreboard isn't the official shot count for the game. Sometimes the same people keeping the official shots are the ones updating the scoreboard; sometimes they are not. If not (or if malfunctions or errors result in a discrepancy), the scoreboard is updated later, so if a shot doesn't go up on the board when you see it, that doesn't mean it wasn't counted. And while some rinks' stat crews are certainly better than others at tallying shots, none ever "stopped counting" shots for one team, the other or both. Anyone with complaints about shot counts at Bright should send their checks for a new press box (located somewhere in the same zip code as the east goal line) to:

Harvard Athletics
65 North Harvard Street
Boston, MA 02163

In other news, I haven't yet seen either game from the weekend, just Friday's highlights, so no real comment just yet on how close the Yale game was or was not.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Hi everyone-I'm driving out to Bright for Saturday's game vs. RPI. Any tips on parking? Are there places near the arena, or does it make sense to park across the river and walk? Last time I went I was living and Boston and just took the T, but I don't have that option this time... Thanks!

Anybody who drives to Bright want to help this kind visitor? I know there is parking available at Bright (for a fee) and, I think, across the street at the business school (for a smaller fee). I'm not sure whow limited parking is at Bright. If I were from out of town, I'd either arrive early and park at Bright (You might even beat the parking attendant if you arrive before 5.) and walk across to dine in Harvard Square or park in the Square and walk across for the game. I think parking in the Square garages can be somewhat expensive, but there are meters (earlier you get there, better the chance of getting one). You might find a visit to the Square unnecessary if you used to live in Boston, though.

I've only ever driven to the Bright once and I had a parking pass at the time so I might not be much help but...even though parking should be fine be aware that there's construction on the roads to the rink, particularly JFK/N. Harvard Street at the bridge over the Charles, and that's usually a mess. So get there early if you want to park at the Bright or B-school across the street. Otherwise, the Square might be a better more expensive choice.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

These are good options. There's usually plenty of parking at Bright for $10. Event parking at the B-school is typically $5 and a .25 mile walk. I'd avoid parking in the Square. Getting there early is always a good idea.

X2 on this option! I'd either arrive early and park at Bright (You might even beat the parking attendant if you arrive before 5.) and walk across to dine in Harvard Square

I had never been to Bright until last year, do NOT get caught in the Cambridge/Harvard Square mess, park at the rink and walk across the river and back. You can actually do the pregame at the Harvard field house, nice spot if you don't want to walk the ten minutes to town. Have fun

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Now THAT...that was a game where we got our doors blown off.

Outscored 11-3 in the last two games. Have not scored 1st in an ECACHL game. And Fallstrom skated off looking hurt (forearm?) with about a minute left, in a case of the "that's the last thing we need." Not pretty so far.

Wonder what's up with Michalek. He did not dress tonight and Traber went in in relief of Girard. Otherwise I would have been expecting him to start tomorrow.

Not that the 4th game of the season can ever really be a must win but...Harvard really needs to beat RPI tomorrow. Not just for confidence's sake but because of the schedule. We have 8 straight league games and 9 of the next 11 league contests, all on the road. Yikes.

On the "Bright" side...our freshmen are really good.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I know Union is good - very good perhaps although their coach stated that they have not been playing well. Guess that changed in a hurry last night. In a word, we were godawful. No two ways about it. We had nothing last night. They could have put a cardboard cutout to replace Groesnick when he got hurt and Union still would have won the game. It was like watching men vs. boys. Union passed, skated and hit us like there was no tomorrow. We had zero response. If this game was a measuring stick, we have a LONG, LONG way to go before we can become competitive in our own league, never mind on a national stage. And it isn't because we are young although that has something to do with it. Talent and coaching are good not enough at the moment. Heck, we called a timeout midway through the third period down 4-1 and Jerry Fortin was giving it to the team something good. After the timeout? Again, nothing. This team doesn't seem to have a pulse. It was almost as if they had resigned themselves to losing to Union before the puck was dropped to begin the game. I mean it. They played like they had no idea what to do. Line changes were sometimes lazy, there was no jump or urgency. What gives?

Also several players were missing last night most notably Colin Blackwell. Injuries? Benched? If anyone has an update on why Blackwell, Rempel and Jaw were out, it would be appreciated.

If we lose tonight, this season could get ugly fast.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Blackwell is out with an injury. Jaw quite possibly was a healthy scratch, and Remple possibly as well.
We are young, but not that young. We have a lot of seniors, and our sophomores are fairly experienced after last year. I didn't see last nights game, but possibly Teddy is doing his usual play the freshmen a lot at the start of the year, instead of easing them in once they've earned it or shown they can perform (not that Vesey needs any of that, by all accounts he has been great so far).
Surprised nobody has noticed the absence of Valek. He is taking a leave of absence, and will be back next year. Not sure if the same applies to Michalek, though checking an updated roster would maybe shed some light on it.

Michalek is on the roster still. In fact I might be retroactively imagining it, but I'm pretty sure I saw him on the bench at least during the Bentley game. I hadn't noticed Valek being absent from the roster even though I noticed his absence on the ice. Just assumed he was hurt.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Can anyone speak to the quality of the video this year? I'm thinking about signing up, but itks been disappointing in year's past.

Well we got the win...and our freshmen continued to look good. We heavily outshot them the 1st period...or so I heard as I got stuck in Central Sq. on the way to the game. We did well in the 2nd and then Girard made a flurry of stops toward the tail end of that period. In the 3rd, shots were 7-2 RPI but one of out shots was the ENG. Would like to see more than 2 shots in a period even if we're up 3 as we need to make sure we close teams out.

Next week we get Cornell on Friday coming off two road losses. They'll be itching for a W but we've played well at Lynah the past few years so here's hoping that continues. Game is 7:30 on NBCSN...they were giving it some good promo time during another Harvard sporting event that was on NBCSN today that we won't talk about.

As good as our freshmen have been...have to think in a hostile road environment like Lynah it will be the experienced guys who make the difference...Biega, Fallstrom (who played tonight), Greiner, etc. Hopefully Blackwell is back for that as well.

2-2 and now a long stretch of road games. Of course last year we went 1-2-1 in our 4 game league homestand before 6 straight road league games (and 9 straight away from the Bright thanks to the Fenway game) and it all worked out fine.

PS - Hopefully someone figures out Dartmouth by the time we play them in January. Last undefeated team in the country/conference after beating Union tonight.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

What can Harvard fans tell me about Steve Michalek. Sounds like he is leaving Harvard and Cedar Rapids of the USHL has picked him up?

He played 24 games last year but had yet to see the ice this year? Whats the deal?

Thanks!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Not sure what the story is on Michalek. I did see this:
http://finishyourcheck.com/topic/68774-cedar-rapids-adds-harvard-goaltender-steve-michalek/

and sound a few twits on twitter. No idea why. Hope it is not a Gov 1310 problem.

As to Bradey Jaw, I was chatting with him at the game on Saturday. He was there in a suit and said he had a strain of the ACL but did not sound like a season ending thing.

RPI game looked to me and some of the RPI players are really huge but it appears like Harvard' tradition of recruiting for speed over size paid off.
