Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

Coming up for the game next week, what is the parking situation, website says Gate 8? Is this the best option? Never been to Bright and any help would be much appreciated. Actually approaching the athletic complex from Storrow Drive heading west, staying at Residence Inn Tudor Wharf

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

LT... Think your best bet is the Business School parking lot just across N. Harvard St. from the stadium; 5 minute walk. The gates into the stadium are mostly reserved. Not sure if you can call the ticket office, (617) 495-2211, and see if they sell parking passes. Gate 6 on N. Harvard St. has direct access to the Bright Center.

I will give them a call, thanks.

I posted this link as a thread, but wanted to repost it here in case some Harvard hockey fans missed it. A couple players on the team put together a 24/7 type show with 3 episodes, and the link above was to the third episode. The other 2 are on youtube. Definitely an interesting watch.

Hockey News with a quick bio on Heisenberg listed Brian Hart.

Brian Hart, LW – Exeter Academy Lions (N.H. HS)

A two-sport star in New Hampshire, Hart also holds the school record for goals in soccer. On the ice, he’s a burgeoning power forward who is hard to stop once he gets his feet moving. A heavy shot bolsters his offensive arsenal. Draft eligible in 2012.

Also, Heisenberg has Brayden Jaw back as a Harvard commit for next year.

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

Great game tonight by both teams. Hard hitting, good skating and some excellent chances at both ends. Killorn was HUGE tonight. Definitely Alex's best game in a Crimson uniform. He has come a long way.

Power play had some curious combos out there - anyone want to tell me why Brendan Rempal was even out there??? Yes, he is physical but not much else. He looked overmatched at times. And Colin Moore's line had a tough night. Spent most of it chasing the Eli all over the place. Colin needs better wingers because he is a better player than he showed tonight.

And finally, WE WON A GAME! I thought for sure we were headed for another tie when Young knotted the score late in the game. But Alex came through and we held 'em off. Hopefully this puts us on a good run going forward. Build some momentum heading into the playoffs.

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

Fun game to watch and living all gthe way out in San Fran, great to be able to watch the team on TV. Couple of thoughts, albeit from someone watching on TV which is always a different perspective than seeing it live:

The good
- Harvard's PP is simply awesome. They move the puck so well and they are a threat to score every time. It's a treat to watch and a throwback in some regards to the 5 forward PPs of the 1980s.
- The Killorn, Blackwell, Everson line was dominant. They consistently outplayed which ever line they faced, including Yale's top line.
- I thought Michalek had a solid game. He wasn't called on to do a ton, but he made the key saves when he had to

The bad:
- The D is way to laxadasical in their own zone. Countless turnovers (particularlaly by Everson & Rempel & McNally) that led to chances for Yale. I know Yale is quick and plays an aggressive forecheck, but these guys have to do better and be committed to getting the ouck out of the zone with purpose.
- Harvard really lacks upper echelon forwards. Killorn & Blackwell are special. To a lesser extent, Everson is as well. But there is a huge drop off after that. The team really misses Morrison & Fallstrom as it would be great to assemble 2 lines that had the capability to score a few goals every night. If I had to characterize Harvard, they have a top line, and then 3 depth/checking lines at this point.
- I don't know what the final face-off tally was, but it seemed like Yale dominated. Winning face-offs is such a huge part of the game and it's an area that Harvard needs to work on.

This is a huge stretch for Harvard. After beating Yale, Harvard has 2 very winnable games in Brown & Dartmouth. No game is a given, but if they can win 3 in a row here, Harvard could very well be looking at 4th place and potentially, a 1st round bye. that would be sweet.

Anyone know how long Fallstrom is out? I know Morrison is done for the season.

Quinnipiac???

i was at Bright for the women's game tonight. The men's sounds, from the box score, to have been a fast clean game. is there anyone out there who can comment on what it was like.

By the way -- Parking
Parking situation is getting worse and worse each week. This week for my $10 I had to park past the baseball field. Not sre if I was in Allston or Dedham!!! I got there 2 hours before the game to try to get a close spot.

Hahahaha, nope.

The lack of penalties was that the refs were playing by the no blood, no foul rules. There were tons of scraps after the whistle, mostly from Girard being crashed into heavily many times in the 3rd and Harvard taking exception. Even then there were no penalties- to either team. Refs also didn't call a blatant, blatant hand pass by Harvard and somehow a linesman got hit in the back by a Harvard clearing attempt in the 3rd that was sent down the middle of the ice.
As for the fast, Harvard was in the doldrums (looked slow, completely unable to clear the puck) the first 30 minutes of the game and were lucky to be down only 3-1 at the 1st break. They did pick it up somewhere in the first for a bit when Coach Donato kicked them all off the bench during a TV timeout but fell back into looking sloppy and the shot count ended up somewhere like 20-7. Harvard finally got some offensive pressure in the latter part of the 2nd and after a rugby scrum that saw Hartzell knocked down, the puck found its way to McNally who sent a pass to Kroshus for an easy goal. Harvard wins the ensuing face-off, dumps the puck in and Quinnipiac tries to clear. Biega knocks it down with a glove, throws a soft chip near the net as he's being pressured. Puck would probably have gone over the net, Hartzell, with no traffic, tries to glove it and has it go off the tip of his glove and into the net.
At that point, wheels fell off defensively for Quinnipiac and Hartzell got the hook in the 3rd. Fallstrom's goal was the result of the Bobcats giving Killorn an acre of space down low with no pressure whatsoever. Bobcats still looked threatening to score but Girard played well, making 26 saves in relief. Bobcats had one ring off the crossbar off a faceoff that was reviewed but that didn't go in.

Ultimately, the game was neither fast, nor clean but Harvard did get the 2 points and their first ever win at Quinnipiac.

Also, the line of Jones-Jones-Peca for Quinnipiac is going to terrorize the ECAC as they get older. Even in the loss they looked amazing - great speed and chemistry. It's like a line of three Colin Blackwell's.

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

I really don't feel like contributing to the discussion dredged up by one of my "ignore list" all-stars who couldn't be bothered to find this year's thread but I will say anyone who thinks this year's Beanpot was a flop or disappointment either did not see the game, does not know hockey, or does not know the meaning of those words. Was it unfortunate to see Harvard lose in the Beanpot for Harvard fans? Sure. Did they disappoint? No. They outplayed BU for large stretches of that game but hats off to Millan who played out of this world when it happened. The only other opener that would compare in my 4 years would be the '08 semis also against BU, who also was ranked #1 starting the morning of the tournament.

As far as the ties go, we've joked about it on air that somehow, even though it wouldn't mean a thing, 13-12 (10-8) would feel better than 8-7-10 (6-4-8). But that's aesthetics. Nothing would actually substantially change though and this would still be a team fighting for a bye. As it stands, Harvard will have won or tied the season series with every team below them with the possible exception of St. Lawrence. That's nothing to sneeze at. Further, let's remember that the media (not me specifically) picked Harvard to finish in last place this year. Technically that could still happen mathematically if every team picks up the right amount of points (I say that not to jinx anything) but it's unlikely. Instead, this is a team competing for a bye. A team that has skated into some tough environments and done pretty decently for themselves.

I know with the parity of this league, saying anything about how a team will do in the playoffs is slightly (or completely) absurd but to say this much: Harvard will be very comfortable in close 1 goal games, very comfortable in OT, and won't feel too nervous about needing to come back from a deficit, whether in a series or a game. That type of experience can go far in the playoffs.

All I know is that if I weren't in the booth, I'd be very excited to be in the stands watching this team. And I wouldn't (well, I don't, but I especially wouldn't) have that excitement tempered by the same boo-bird so-called fans that come out of the woodwork once in a blue moon to squawk the same thing and then (thankfully) disappear again.

On a completely different topic - what does everyone think about this 'tender (Peter Traber) listed by USCHO/CH Inc/Heisenberg as a Harvard commit? Both, you're the recruit guy more than me - what's the word? Seems like the NAHL is becoming a bit of a trend for Harvard. Also looks like the newest Heisenberg commit (Moy) played with McCrea in San Diego and now both are 2013/4 recruits.

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

There is more hitting in Swan Lake than what the Crimson put up Saturday. And still they gave up 13 power plays, 3 PP goals. D was still hanging in Cambridge. It was a two bag night...

There was definitely hitting but it was just mostly illegal and/or after the whistle.

Harvard just needs to put it behind them and focus on this weekend...they still control their own destiny for the bye. Especially considering the injury bug at the moment, an extra weekend off could be huge for this team.

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

Well thank goodness for Raphael Girard. He played the game of his life tonight. There was one sequence where he made three close in stops with no help from his D. Man, he was outstanding. He had to be because we gave him no help especially in the second period. How SLU didn't score more than one goal is beyond me. Yes, we played better in the third and David Valek's goal was a thing of beauty. Top shelf wrister that had eyes. But for the most part, we really struggled to win this one. However, we'll take it given the number of ties this year. And with Clarkson and Colgate losing, we're tied for third with a chance to wrap up third by beating Clarkson tomorrow. So things are looking up.

Really bad call on Ryan Grimshaw tonight. Yes, it was a penalty but charging should have been the extent of the call. To kick him out of the game was ludicrous. Rumor at the rink has it that they will review the call and hopefully reverse his misconduct so he can play on Senior Night. That is the way it should be.

-Girard really did steal the show in the 2nd. I've seen the replays and I'm still not quite sure how he made all the saves he did.
-Since it was only a game misconduct and not a DQ (at least according to my stats and the box score online) Grimshaw's hit is not an automatic suspension anyway but could be reviewed by the league for supplementary discipline. (Rule 4.4.b)
A player who is assessed a game misconduct penalty is suspended for the remainder of that game only. The player shall be allowed to play in the team’s next scheduled game.
-Here are the playoff scenarios for Harvard: Playoff Scenarios I think I have them all covered.

I was at the game and agree wholeheartedly. It was a well played game and Girard was the difference. Several times I thought we had a goal only to have him stick out a pad, a glove or dive across to stop the puck.

I thought if we could have jumped on you a bit more with that 5 minute penalty at the start and potted a couple but you kept us at bay for most of the 5 minutes.

Although following the Saints for a good many years this was my first visit to Bright. (Been everywhere else.) I was a bit underwhelmed. Ticket booth outside where you had to stand in the rain. No lobby, kind of a rinky dink concession stand but I was most surprised by the lack of fans. I think SLU had you outnumbered. I don't know why but for an institution so well endowed I was expecting something "brighter!" Then again for the amount of fans there I guess even with it being such an important game certainly means you don't need more seats!!!

Re: Harvard 2011-12 Thread: Celebrating our 375th

All the other posters have it exactly right- Girard was the difference in the second, making many large stops.

Critsports, you are right on with the comment about the fans. Keep in mind though the basketball team was playing at the same time, which cut into the fans. Still, there were over twenty five hundred people there, though as is often the case, a nice proportion of them were for the opposing team. A lot of ECAC teams have many alumns in Boston, and it is a fun place for students to travel to as well, so Harvard generally has a pretty good crowd, but not overwhelmingly for the home team always.

Interestingly, Bright was modeled after Thompson Arena at Dartmouth while keeping the old Watson Rink roof frame and building structure. Originally, we were supposed to get an entirely new building with lobby and all the bells and whistles. At the last minute, they decided to go the cheap route and retain the frame and roof structure of the old rink and just renovate and rebuild inside out. That mean't no lobby or concourse to speak of. Maybe I'm biased but I think Bright is one of the better buildings in the ECAC and certainly has one of the best playing surfaces on the East Coast.

As for the fans, well, the program has suffered from losing seasons and apathy since back in the early nineties. We have routinely been outnumbered by opposing fans even from schools such as Brown and Princeton. SLU always brings a strong vocal contingent. However, I didn't think last night was any great shakes by the SLU faithful. Harvard fans used to make a lot of noise and got behind the team. No longer. If you so much as raise your voice, you get dirty looks from other fans. It has become a joyless crowd and it really doesn't help the team at all. Unfortunate.

Good to know and thanks for the clarification. It would have been a shame for him to miss Senior Night.
