Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

I remember that game. I remember a game vs. Tech where we scored with just a few seconds left and the crowd was INSANELY loud as well.

The first time we played Coach Comley and MSU there was a very large and loud crowd. I think the final of that one was 10 or 9-3.

Final score was 10-4.. then the next day we lost 3-1 I believe

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

Interesting note: Michigan has been to only 1 shootout in the near two years since its start. That was against Alaska this year at Yost, where Alaska took the shootout 1-0. So, Michigan has never won a shootout, and has also never scored in the shootout.

And will hopefully never do another shootout. I was happy that I hadn't seen one. Also, with this Michigan team, if you make it to the shootout you'll get the 2nd point, Michigan won't.

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

Ugh, I sincerely hope it doesn't come to shootouts this weekend. I'd much rather see two good games decided in regulation.

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

+ eleventy billion infinity.

Shootouts are lame.

I wish I didn't have to see the one I did see.

I still don't understand why ties are so evil.

Even without the SO gimmick points, the playoff race would be tight. The point differential between 2nd place and 10th place would be 7 points. I like the old points system and no shootout, but the bottom line in the CCHA is that, outside of Miami, there is parity.. good for the conference race, not good for qualifying for the NCAA.

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

If shootouts are evil, why is the IOC allowing them (and has for decades) in Olympic Hockey to break tie games, including medal games? ;)

Personally, I like the shootout because it gives the casual fans a clear cut winner, and it eliminates the mess that every CCHA team seems to get into where they end the season 8-4-16. There is no way that teams can be happy playing up to a third of their conference games with ties. It's embarassing.

I'm glad that the CCHA was wise enough to not fall into the NHL's problems and adopted sane shootout rules: they still count as ties to the NCAA, outright wins are worth 3 pts to eliminate the NHL's phantom extra point, and the standings are clearly noted as to ties and shootout wins.

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

One of the few favorable trends that could work in Michigan's favor is a return to home ice after playing 7 of the last 8 away from Yost and going 3-5 in that frame. Since M's brutal five game losing streak in November, Michigan has righted its home ice performance with a record of 7-0-1 in its last 8 home games, with 4 shutouts and only 7 goals allowed.

Will the intensity, discipline and focus be there this weekend to avoid 5x3 penalty kills, soft goals, and the woe is me attitude?

I don't know if this is a sizzle or steak argument. Frankly I don't care what the casual fan thinks, because they are typically not there for the right reasons anyway (um, like, how many quarters are in hockey, dude. Oh, and how's my hair?) I also don't care how many ties a team ends up with- some tie results you feel good about and some you don't. Either way, this obsession to declare a winner in a regular season game is more for the fans than the players. I don't see where they are embarrassed by it. I'd be more embarrassed with losses, than ties, simply because it tells me that the team is at least earning some credit for their effort. The question is, are teams tying each other because of talent parity or because their system in place doesn't allow a wide open offensive push? (Are teams playing to win, or simply playing not to lose?)

As far as how the CCHA manages the shootouts- I don't think they have a choice as far as how the NCAA acknowledges the outcome after OT. Since it is not universal, they have to accept it as a tie. The points system is much fairer this season with the added regulation point, but the idea of settling an extra point with a glorified skills competition is so subjective. I'd rather see teams throw all caution to the wind in OT (4x4 for example) than see that. I think that is how most home teams play in OT anyway, especially when their shootout record stinks. Heck of a way to reward 65 minutes of even play, with penalty shots, ala soccer, especially when it can impact standings.

My own theory is that the shootout gimmick was cooked up to give the lower division teams a chance to gain extra points and make the standings race more exciting. As I mentioned before, the only stand out team in the league this season is Miami, so parity already exists- no sense complicating it.

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

Don't Know if this has been stated! This game has #4 spot implications!!!!

UNO and Alaska are done with CCHA after this weekend so at most 6 points for them! Which is not enough.

Ferris and State play each other which could hurt both if they are good games, but realistically each should get some points. Then next weekend they each play the bottom feeders in the Conference. Western for Ferris and BG for State- So they are my locks for #2 and #3.

This leaves #4 in the hands of Northern or Mich. Each has 4 games left and could get as many as 12pts. If they do this they could be #2 or even #3 but really doubt that is going to happen. So This is the weekend where I feel the #4 spot is claimed! With Michigan at home I expect them to get the most our of it but no one knows who will show up to play for UofM sooo....I can't wait!!!!!!!

Now that you've said it, we will have two ties that end with each team getting the extra point, once. :D

(man, I sure hope not- finish in regulation)

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

The game in November 1997 at Lakeview Arena was arguably the best Northern Michigan/Michigan game, we won 1-0 with a goal from Freddy Mattersdorfer! I've never seen the home crowd since then make so much cheer. I miss the old Lakeview days, the days of Vigier, Smith and Trudeau line, hahah. Remember that game Kujo and Mojo?

What a great game! The crowd was tremendous. I'd never heard anything like that in Lakeview. I believe that was the Saturday night game. The night before, Marty Turco picked up his 100th collegiate win against us. That game wasn't bad, either, just the wrong result.

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

In this week's intermissions, we'll continue our series Remembering the World Hockey Association with Dave Hanson of "Slap Shot" fame. He's got some great stories to tell. For those of you unfamiliar with the league, it was the hockey version of the basketball league, the ABA, depicted in the Will Ferrell movie "Semi-Pro." It operated from 1971-79 before merging with the NHL.

We'll also continue our talk on the "Casa Calabria's Where Are They Now" with Eric LeMarque, who played with the 'Cats thru the '90 season, and survived and 8 day ordeal lost in the cold and snow of the California mountains. This week we'll wind down his playing career and begin to explore host life after hockey, which took some stunning turns.

The WHA feature will air in the first intermissions and the LeMarque feature in the 2nd. We'll also begin profiling out seniors in our pregame shows.

Hope you enjoy!

Looking forward to seeing old friends and alums at Damon's after the Friday game!

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

I really hope NMU can stay out of the box this weekend. I really think it will come down to playing 5 on 5, even with NMU's PP number this year. As for the results, any outcome that keeps us ahead of UM, Alaska, and UNO would be great and I am hoping for a win tomorrow when I am in the building.

Re: Hail! To those... NMU at Michigan, 2/19-2/20

Good luck today Wildcats!!! It won't be easy and will take a total team effort but you can do this!!! Go Cats Go! Go Cats Go! Go Cats Go!
